Having almost 11M in dead money in 2029 is gonna hurt this team big time. No matter how much it benefits them next year I don't think it makes sense.
Only way it could work is if the Oilers are planning on a scorched earth rebuild during those years but as long as McDavid is on the team that isn't going to happen.

Their Rebuild Just Started in Reality
Buying out Vanecek doesn't really make sense. He wasn't good last year but he's only making 3.4M this year then he's up. Sharks need goalies anyway.
Vlasic will be up in 2 years before Smith and Celebrini are due for their next deals. Why buy him out when they need to hit the cap floor anyway?
SJS may have one of the brightest long-term outlooks in the league. They need to fill out the pipeline on defense but Celebrini-Smith is gonna be the next Crosby-Malkin / Mcdavid-Drai of our generation.
They're gonna be bad for 2 or 3 more years, but once they add a couple more top picks (probably on D) they're gonna be scary.

Guentzel
Honestly I think VAN is better served saving the 9M on Guentzel. Take that money and spend on filling out the rest of the FWD core. Maybe go for a guy like Toffoli at a lower number.
IMO this FWD core is top heavy and Van would be better served creating 4 deep lines. Petey, Miller, Boeser are all guys that will score at an elite pace anyway - not like they are lacking firepower in the Top6.

I see your point but no owner or GM will take on 9.5M in dead money for three years. That's 1/9th of your cap space to pay a player not to play for you.

Marner UTES going to a new team
If Utah was going to be terrible in 2025 this could be a base but the team is trending upwards and may make the playoffs.
Mid-rd first and a 2nd plus Kerfoot doesn't get it done IMO.

Yea I agree I just don't see how they would fit that in. Guentz will make 9M easily on the open market. Skjei and Pesce will both push 6M. Carolina has no real avenue to get rid of salary either so they're pretty much handcuffed.
I think keeping Pesce is priority #1. Then if you can somehow do Guentzel then go for it. Just my opinion, don't follow Canes super closely.

Makes sense now but paying 9.5M in dead money from 2027-2030 would essentially tank the Oilers as a franchise.
As much as he's getting flack for his performance he's still a top4 guy that can take a lot of minutes. Worth 9.5M? No, probably closer to 4.5-5M. But it's not like he brings absolutely nothing to this team.
Nurse is untradeable but I guarantee someone will take on Campbell if you throw in a first, and that takes 5M off the books and maybe allows you to sign a top RD like Pesce.

Canes aren't set up very well tbh. If Pesce walks then that RD looks rough esp with Burns pushing 40. Idk if Kuz can still be an effective 2C at this point in his career. Have my doubts about Kotka as well - see him more as a luxury 3C guy. Goaltending is fine if Kotchetkov can grab the reigns but Freddy may be too injury-prone to be a reliable starter.
Honestly I think this was their year to win and I don't see them going far with a team that looks signifcantly weaker than last year's.

I like it. If NSH is serious about signing Saros long-term Askarov will waste a lot of his prime years as a backup or 1B at best. He's got great potential but NSH is one of the few teams that have an elite goalie if they lock up Saros.
If Askarov lives up to his potential OTT becomes scary good in the next few years with Stu, Tkachuk, Batherson, Sanderson, Chabot, Askarov core.

Don't see the appeal for Utah - Keller's a PPG guy at 7M for 4 more years and Durzi's a top 4 D. I doubt Marner signs there and if he does it'll be at a much higher number than Keller's.
A Keller-Marner swap doesn't really make sense but if it did happen Toronto would be adding significantly.

If it was a weaker draft I could see this as a starting point. Potential of getting a guy like Dickinson to anchor your blueline for 10+ years at #5 is too hard to pass upon though.

Coleman retained will also cost more considering he scored 30 goals this year. Flames don't have to deal him and getting a 2nd isn't enough incentive esp if we have to take money back

I don't see the value for CGY in trading Marky just to move up from 10th to 7th and and 28th to 25th. Without retention I'd consider tho.
In other drafts I would take the deal but this year is so deep that I don't think the gap between Catton, Parekh, Iginla, Lindstrom, Helenius... is significant enough to justify the deal.

Value isn't there for CGY. Minten is obviously valuable and the late 1st doesn't hurt but Robertson hasn't shown anything and Liljegren has been inconsistent at best. If you want Markstrom retained at 3M then Minten and the 1st will get it done. If you're looking for Andersson as well then that's a whole other conversation and will likely involve assets that the Leafs just don't have.

I agree, I would take Markstrom + 28OA for 7OA in a heartbeat.

I would argue that a legitimate #1G is worth more to OTT than a top-10 pick at this point in their trajectory. Another losing season in OTT and things will start to get ugly. Obviously a 7OA is massive but Markstrom could be the difference between a wild-card and a bottom-ten finish.

If you're not willing to give up that pick though then don't expect any retention on Markstrom or the addition of Mangiapane.
A top-tier starter at 3M x 2 plus a fringe top-six winger is equivalent to a blue-chip prospect in my mind. CGY has no interest in a late first, a second, a bottom six F and a mid goalie in exchange for a large part of their core.

13.7 GSAx this year (7th in the league among goalies w/ at least 30 GP). He's a top tier starter in the league.
Last year was a down year but he has been otherwise consistently a top tier starter.
The 905 SV% is irrelevant considering the Flames had one of the worst post-TDL defensive cores.

Considering you're also adding Mang who is a consistent 40 pt guy, OTT is adding substantially.
