On the canes yes he is

No clue why we’re interested in him

Because you guys are losing a bunch of defenders. Most in the business think he’s a 2nd pair on a contender.

They're going to give a max-term extension to Jarvis, first of all, because what's the point of having tons of cap space if you're not going to use it to make your next big young star a Cane for life. Second, if they don't re-sign Guentzel, I expect a significant splash in either UFA or with the Necas return.

If Guentzel has any interest in Chicago he will wait to talk to them July 1st, no need to trade assets.

Canes aren't set up very well tbh. If Pesce walks then that RD looks rough esp with Burns pushing 40. Idk if Kuz can still be an effective 2C at this point in his career. Have my doubts about Kotka as well - see him more as a luxury 3C guy. Goaltending is fine if Kotchetkov can grab the reigns but Freddy may be too injury-prone to be a reliable starter.
Honestly I think this was their year to win and I don't see them going far with a team that looks signifcantly weaker than last year's.

Maybe an Orlov swap to fee up cap space?

I think there's an underrated chance that Guentzel and one of Skjei/Pesce are re-signed. You can be a tad weak at 2C if your wings are as strong as Guentzel/Svech/Jarvis are.

Yea I agree I just don't see how they would fit that in. Guentz will make 9M easily on the open market. Skjei and Pesce will both push 6M. Carolina has no real avenue to get rid of salary either so they're pretty much handcuffed.

I think keeping Pesce is priority #1. Then if you can somehow do Guentzel then go for it. Just my opinion, don't follow Canes super closely.

Guentzel and Pesce are do-able either if the Canes go skinny at one of our top-6 wings with a reclamation gamble (such as Zucker or Arvidsson) or if they bridge Jarvis.

They aren’t getting rid of Orlov, they signed him to replace Skjei/Pesce last offseason with the idea that one would get traded. That didn’t happen so he was on the third pair as a luxury, but now both are likely leaving in UFA so he’s needed. Our best prospect also idolizes him so they’re trying to help get him over to the US

They aren’t putting old middle sixers in the top 6 to overspend on defense

If the Canes are high-powered enough with the likes of Guentzel/Aho/Svech/Jarvis, they can afford to do so for a year. Then, when Orlov's intentionally-inflated cap hit expires and Nikishin comes on board, they can spend a lot more the following season. If the long-term picture is a priority, it makes sense to do a bit of a sacrifice in order to keep the defense strong and to pay your next young star for a full 8 years.

Neither is Orlov but that’s where he played this year. Canes aren’t afraid to load up on the back end

Necas trade is going to get done. Nadeau isn’t NHL ready out of the gate.

The most likely scenario is the canes don’t like any of the offers and he signs a one year, Fiala like arbitration deal

Do you pay attention to the news at all? Every team in the league has called and they have engaged with 5-7 per Lebrun, Seravalli lists Columbus, Detroit, Chicago, Nashville, Vancouver, Calgary, and Boston. They have tons of offers, just not what they like right now. They can play the waiting game until someone steps up to the plate.

Damn that must be why the sharks are a joke and the canes have made the playoffs 6 straight years. Are the canes becoming the eastern version of the Thornton era sharks in the playoffs? Maybe, but that’s a topic for another day
