Don’t forget Dermott is still signed here and can sub in for Sandin at any time or even leave Sandin in the AHL and call up Marincin as the 7th defencemen. A left side D of Rielly Sandin and Dermott would still be good.

That's fair. This trade simply comes down to how Botterill and Co. view Mittelstadt and if they are ready to move on or not.

I'm not the biggest Risto fan either but its hard to argue that the Leafs would not benefit from a RHD that can play minimum 20 minutes a night against opposing teams top players and average around 200 hits, 120 blocks a year. Pair him with Rielly and I think they could make a solid duo. Plus, they would not even have to take the toughest match ups as Muzzin and Holl could face the stiffest competition.
A lot of people do not like Risto's plus/minus but put Rielly on Buffalo for the last 6 years and idt his would be much better. Plus/Minus is a useless stat, it is all team and line mate relative.

He played a good portion of last year with Ekman-Larsson if you care to dig deeper, especially just before the season ended. Plus, if you check out Sean Tierney’s defensive pairings charts on Twitter all of Arizona’s pairings that plotted in “good” had Lyubushkin on them. Not to mention Lyubushkin is an absolute bulldozer when it comes to hitting.

Dermott signs his qualifying offer like Johnsson did hoping for a bigger payday the following year.

MIN FLA Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafs_and_Sens_Fan</b></div><div>He was playing with Borowiecki who was having a very good year as well though. Also players typically play better in their contract years.
He is good. He's just not as good as most people think he is on this site at least from watching him on the Sens for ~30 games this season.
I could see him being a second pairing D man on a contender but that's pretty much his ceiling.</div></div>
Do you think Borowiecki's stong season could have anything to do with playing with the DeMelo because the only thing Borowiecki is good at is hitting people?
Plus, you just said what I said, Idt DeMelo is a top paring defensemen either but the combination of DeMelo with Rielly who the Leafs see as their top defensemen should make for a solid top pairing. Think similar to Dumoulin-Letang.

MIN FLA Trade

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MitchMarnerElite </b></div><div>Well, the stats say he’s really good.</div></div>
If the leafs want a 1RHD they are going to have to move one of there "Big 4" which idt they want to do. When you think about it how many teams in the NHL have 2 legit #1 defencemen? Maybe 6 (Boston, Carolina, Columbus, Nashville, San Jose and St. Louis) the rest of the good teams have just the one top defencemen with a solid top 4 (Think Colorado, Dallas, Islanders, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Washington). For the Leafs having a solid second pairing defensemen with Rielly who the Leafs consider their #1 defensemen is exactly what Dubas and company should be aiming to accomplish this offseason. That in tandem with the overall solid pairing of Muzzin-Holl and hopeful further development of Dermott-Sandin should be an above serviceable defense corps to compliment the Leafs forward core.

DeMelo's only 26 so this will put him at 33 when the deal ends, therefore not too too old. I gave DeMelo 7 years to get his cap hit below the 4 million aav some other team may offer him.

With this trade I was thinking LA could then run a top 4 of Dermott-Doughty and UFA-Roy.
In regards to Johnsson as a middle six LW (I feel Johnsson is a top 6 winger he was just having a down year. His shooting percentage was down 5% from the year prior), Kerfoot could easily be swapped into this trade and Johnsson into the Puljujarvi trade if that seems like a better fit.
As for LA's defensive pairings with the addition of Dermott their top four is much more rounded Dermott-Doughty, Ryan/Hutton/Anderson-Roy.

What if the trades got changed to:
Andersen, Kerfoot --> Mangiapane, Jankowski, 2nd. Since Calgary needs a 3rd line center after Monahan and Backlund.
Johnsson,3rd --> Francouz. Johnsson use to look good with Kadri and Sakic could look to get those two together again.
