That's the only scenario that makes sense here.</div></div>
Oh I agree— if it’s a buyout then this isn’t close to enough payment for the $9 million cap space.

Skinner at $4.5 million retention isn’t a terrible contract anymore. I don’t know if a 3rd and swapping #18 for #14 is enough to take on Skinner, but it’s not too far away as long as we’re not buying him out.

It might be fair value. What I'm saying is, between 2022 and 2026, the Hawks have made (or currently have) 10 1st round picks, 12 2nd round picks, and 9 3rd round picks. Whoever we take with the picks you're trading are going to be later picks in a crowded system. It's not a trade that's well designed to the Hawks needs. Honestly, it's significantly less value for the Hawks perthe pick charts, but I'd much rather get a 2026 3rd, #64, and Ceci for #72.

I don't think any of those pieces are particularly desirable for the Hawks. I'd accept Ceci and a 2nd for a 3rd, and maybe even throw in a 4th or 5th too, but it'll take quality, not quantity, for the Hawks to make a trade.

I don’t know about that— I don’t think he’ll have much interest at the deadline. But with retention he’s $3.4 million for one year, and even if the Hawks buy him out that’s decent value.

I think it very much depends on who’s available. If we take Demidov at #2 and Parekh is still there, I’d make this move. There are about 13 total players I’d absolutely love to be there at #18 (including Celibrini, Demidov, Levshunov, others who clearly won’t drop that far) but not all of those prospects are equal either, and if a top 8 prospect falls to 13 I think it would be worth it. This is the sort of deal that shouldn’t be made before draft day though.

Next Year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>exo2769</b></div><div>This is a really good conversation to have. I have a small issue with current management. I say small because I don't see what I'm about to talk about frequently, BUT Lukas Reichel is my example of my issue with management. I'd like more purposeful development of our prospects. Again, Vlasic was done very well. I feel like EDM is going swimmingly. Kurashev too. I'm not a fan of how Management has handled Reichel and I want to avoid this going forward. What do I mean by that? I do like that Reichel spent time in Rockford. I don't want to send many (if any) prospects directly to the NHL...Of course Bedard is the exception. YES, every spot is earned AND if they do earn that spot I'm not standing in the way of that. HOWEVER, it needs to be a high bar. Oliver Moore should not be in the NHL next year imo. Just like Nazar IMO should be in Rockford this year...Barring some amazing training camp where he can prove <strong>without a doubt </strong>he's a better option than Mikheyev/Kurashev/Hall/AA/Riechel. Nazar CANNOT be on the bottom 6. He's not that type of player and even if he becomes a 3rd pair winger in 10 years...he's not that grinder today. Even if the Hawks believe him to be the 5th best forward on the team...He should go to Rockford and be their #1 RW or #1C or wherever the Invision him. That's my beef with Reichel. They played him mostly at center in Rockford and then when they brought him up they put him at wing...mostly. It's a hard enough transition from the AHL to NHL. Changing their position on top of the better opponents isn't setting up our prospects for success. YES, I agree with KD that it's good to have "swing" positions for forwards, BUT let's take that 1 step at a time. Wherever we see Nazar as an NHLer...play him there in Rockford. Get him to the NHL and then work on swing positions.
To the Dach/Lud...etc... We don't know if those guys are going to pan out or not. Certainly 1 extra year on JGP/Laff shouldn't hurt their development. Lardis/Hayes/Lud should probably play mutiple years in Rockford. They're going to have a lot of turnover this summer anyway.
The Campbell trade also helps with injuries. Mrazek was fine last year, BUT unfortunately that rarely happens for Mrazek. If Campbell sits for most the year...it's for the picks anyway.</div></div>
I have nothing wrong with Nazar, Slaggert, Moore, or any other prospect spending time in Rockford, if that’s what’s best for their development. I have a problem with them spending time in Rockford when it isn’t best for their development. Nazar was taken at #13, is a very good prospect, spent two years at Michigan after being drafted, and looked very good in three games with the Hawks last year. Maybe time in Rockford will help his development, but maybe he would be dominant in the AHL and the NHL is a better development location. If we sign expensive FAs, it’s harder to send them to Rockford, and we just have less flexibility. I’d rather risk needing to play Raddysh and Anderson every game because Nazar and Slaggert could actually benefit from time in the AHL than risk Nazar and Slaggert being ready for the NHL but not being able to play everyday because we can’t or won’t send Donato, Foligno, Mikheyev, or another forward to Rockford.

Next Year
My only concern here is that we're getting close to blocking out prospects. For this season we're probably fine taking Pageau, but if we sign Lafferty to a multi-year extension as well then we've got Bedard, Nazar, Dickinson, Reichel, Mikheyev, Foligno, Pageau, and Lafferty all under contract already next season. That's eight forward spots taken, not counting Kurashev and Slaggert (either of whom could still be long-term pieces), Oliver Moore (who is likely ready for the NHL next year), any Dach/Ludwinski/Lardis/Hayes/Greene who aren't too far away, Demidov (if we pick him at #2), or any free agent signings next offseason. We've still got $36 million in space for next summer, but that's four guys who really should be bottom six forwards making $4 million or more next year and could be preventing prospects from developing. Separately, I'm okay with that Campbell trade, but it too comes with risk of blocking Stauber/Comesso/Gajan in Rockford.

I think the Hawks are fairly high on Ryan Greene. He was a 2nd round pick and his value hasn't gone down. Take out Greene and Holmstrom and we're close to a deal, although I think that's still a slightly cheaper price than the Mikheyev dump was.

The Hawks definitely need a RD signing. Phillips really doesn't project to be anything more than a 7th defenseman. Having him skate with Kaiser isn't ideal for Kaiser's development, but we definitely need a RD so that Korchinski and Vlasic aren't one injury away from playing on a line with Phillips.

Jarnkok might not have negative value, but he’s just not a great fit on the Hawks. After last season he’s definitely a bottom six forward with some upside, but the Hawks already have more than six bottom six forwards. We’re not the right team to pay for him.

The Hawks would definitely accept the picks trade. I tbh j that take Jarnkrok for free, although we’ve got enough bottom six pieces now it doesn’t really make sense to pay for him, and I think Kampf would take a 2nd with a 3rd going back at minimum to dump.

Also as of now I don't see anyone that is ready for full time NHL duties besides the guys I already have in the lineup, Maybe some guys you'd want as a call up but no full time guys imo.</div></div>
The Hawks resigned Rachel for 2 years, $1.2 million per year. He really struggled last year, but it doesn’t make much sense to start him out in Rockford this year. The Hawks also signed Landon Slaggert after his season at Notre Dame ended last year. He only projects as a bottom six guy, but he looked like a legitimate NHL player in his small sample size last year— not sure why he wouldn’t be starting in Chicago too.

I don’t really think any of Roos, Phillips, or Crevier have shown anything to indicate they should be in the Hawks’ long term plans. I’d be surprised if the Hawks resigned all three of them— 1-2 as 7th defenders or Rockford players is my guess.

Mikheyev and Lafferty are two guys. Even after that trade, and assuming that Lafferty signs and each of Nazar, Slaggert, and Reichel start the season in the NHL (and I think they should), the Hawks only have 12 forwards. That’s a reasonable number. They’ll add maybe one more to a big contract and likely another who can spend time scratched or in Rockford. They won’t sign three free agent forwards, and definitely won’t sign three defenseman.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>labonjam</b></div><div>The hawks are looking for wingers, and if we are having a discussion on if kane or Mikheyev is better is pointless, both are suitable wingers that can be good fits (a left and right winger)
Also, the hawks traded for a secound round pick in 2027, 3 years down the road compared to a 3rd round pick now. The availabilty of picks is a factor that GMs consider.</div></div>
Kyle Davidson has been consistently ambivalent as to when picks land. Most teams value current picks slightly higher, but (1) the pick is more likely to be early in the round in 2027 than 2025, (2) it increases capital the Hawks can trade away once the contention window opens, and (3) most importantly it spaces out our picks more. In the 2022-2026 drafts we made (or currently have) 10 1st round picks, 12 2nd round picks, and 9 3rd round picks. It makes sense for the Hawks to get a future pick over a current one.

I dont see why hawks would not roll the dice on kane, both Mikheyev and Kane come off the books at the same time so they can still upgrade after those two are gone.</div></div>
Mikheyev is considered a better defender and is coming off a down year. Kane might be slightly better next year, but it’s not a huge difference. Assuming the Hawks sign Lafferty (whose UFA rights they just traded for) and Nazar starts the season in the NHL, the Hawks will have 12 forwards already on the roster. They’ve got at least on RFA forward (Joey Anderson) who would make sense as a 13th forward and a handful of prospects in Rockford (Dach, Hayes, Lardis) who could make the NHL sometime next year. I expect only 0 or 1 more forwards to sign (or be traded for) making much more than a million dollars, so overpaying isn’t a huge deal for the Hawks. Maybe they do take on Kane, but he’s both taking up cap space and a roster spot for 25-26 too, and next offseason appears to be when Davidson makes a FA splash. I wouldn’t be shocked if the Hawks took on Kane, but there are a handful of reasons they may not.
Also, I would be shocked if they take Kane and it doesn’t take a 2nd round pick. You gave a lot of reasons why it’s like the Mikheyev deal but that involves a 2nd round pick, and the Hawks have made and will make so many high picks that a 3rd round pick just doesn’t move the needle much.

I'm not all that convinced that Kane is a better player than Mikheyev-- The Athletic's player cards, for instance, view them as equally good. Kane's still a bit more expensive (I'm not sure why Vancouver retained $700,000 but they did), but I imagine the Hawks would insist on a 2nd round pick, even if without retention, over a 3rd with retention. The other factor is, they already made the Mikheyev trade. Even if the Kane trade made just as much sense as the Mikheyev trade, the Hawks might have bigger priorities than making both trades.

That's way too many free agents. Vlasic and Korchinski will both need top four minutes (unless the Hawks decide for Korchinski to spend some time in Rockford) but it makes no sense to sign a LD like Gostisbehere for more than like $1.5 million a year, and definitely no sense to sign one for more than a year. We have LD prospects (Del Mastro, Kaiser) who might be ready for the NHL this season and the Hawks won't be good enough for it to make sense to block a prospect. Similarly, three years is too many for Carrier in this scenario if we've got Niemela and Rinzel both potentially ready for the NHL within a year or two and possible Levshunov joining them.
