Tavares feeds Ovi for goals record next season

Created by: markykins1
Team: 2023-24 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: May 15, 2024
Published: May 15, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I know most Caps fans here would say no, get Marner. He would cost a ton of picks and assets. Tavares for one year to help Ovi is the reason. Caps keep their prospects and picks in this scenario. Not sure how Leafs fans see this but getting 11 million off the books and a mid first rounder would be nice I think.
Trades
WSH
  1. Tavares, John
Additional Details:
Caps take salary off TML hands and give Ovi a better partner to try and break the goals record next season.
TOR
  1. Jensen, Nick
  2. 2024 1st round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
Toronto gets 17th pick and RHD they need and this helps the Caps make room for another player.

Leafs would be all over that, and it would leave them 7 mill to grab a D man.

Terrible for the caps. Atleast have Toronto retain half.

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard pass by the Caps. What a steal by TOR. But it's all mute since Tavares is not waiving his NMC.

If Caps org thinks the goals record is very, very important (and I think they do), this would be a fair risk for the Caps. He would actually be the leading scorer on the team also which is wild.

Caps send 4 million for 2 years of Jensen in my trade. You need to consider that also.

Retaining anything would defeat the purpose of the Leaf's moving him, Keep in mind he is only owed $900K in actual salary after July 1st

Only the conversation between Treliving and JT goes something like this:
GMBT: John got a trade to Washington I need you to waive for.
JT: Brad Go F**" Yourself.

Doesn't matter when it's a 11 mil cap hit. Tavares at 11 mil is a huge cap dump. Nobody is gonna give up assets to acquire that.

There's zero benefit in the caps paying assets to get an old and slow and overpaid Tavares when they desperately need to rebuild.

But it's only for 1 year. It is a risk but if it works and gets Ovi the record, ideally, then the Caps could move forward with a rebuild the year after. If it fails, oh well. Teams sometimes make moves that fail. No guarantees.

He still had 30 goals and 65 points its not a complete cap dump. yes he's not worth the $11M cap hit but he's still a great player with value

Wouldn't the Caps be so much better off, just spending 11m on a UFA or two, keeping their first.
How about. Stamkos for one season at 11m.....now. that would be "star" power.

I mean, I'd love that of course but no way the top FA come to Washington. Years ago they might have but not now. Caps might just stay the normal course and add a player or three and make their draft pick and I'm fine with that but this might be an option they consider.

The biggest difference would be the actual money paid out. in your case they would have to pay $11M but with JT its only $900K. Stamkos is better but not that much better than JT.

Make it a 2nd or 3rd and Wash accepts.

Johnny Toronto will only be there for a year before heading back to Leafland for cheap.

Yeah this is definitely a hard pass from the Caps perspective. Complete steal by TOR

Still 11m against the Cap...I'd take Stamkos at 11m (hypothetically) over JT all day everyday

As an owner and businessman (not a fan) would you pay Stamkos $10M more than JT in actual salary?

I don't think you understand that the risk isn't "Tavares might not be very good," but rather "we may be trading away a pick that turns into a top defenseman or top forward." Jensen for Tavares one for one is the most I'd do. The leafs are desperate to make changes. The caps have the maneuverability as is.

He only has value if he's retained. Which is why I'd be happy for Chicago to pick up the Tavares tab for future considerations then flip him at the deadline half retained. At 11 mil he is 100% a cap dump. Arizona is gone. Actual nhl teams aren't taking an 11 mil cap hit from a 60 point player no matter how cheap his actual salary is.
