<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RecycleShark</b></div><div>How this helps the Leaf's win now: Ferraro improves the defense, Zetterlund scored 24 goals last year, both are low cost. Most importantly it clears up cap space for the Leafs to further improve their roster. The Sharks are one of the few teams that Toronto could trade Marner to without retaining salary.</div></div>
Ferraro doesn’t improve anything. His game isn’t impressive. He’s a guy I watched closely a lot last year as I thought the Leafs were going to go after him and he wasn’t good at all.
Zetterlund produced at the same rate as Nick Robertson, he’s be a depth guy in Toronto (I’m not saying he’s bad at all) but not impactful like you’d hope in a Marner return.
Cap space is nice. But you don’t have to settle on bad trades because you get cap space. I’d rather trade Marner for 2 guys who are impactful top 6 forwards who make 5-6 million

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kohnsharkosz</b></div><div>Can you actually protect a pick acquired from another team? Not aware of that ever happening.
Why? So they can wait for him to sign somewhere in the '25 offseason for zero return assets? Leafs fans insist on the best of both worlds. He's the worst thing to happen to Toronto, but also worth a dragon's horde.</div></div>
The Leafs would be exploring the option of trading in because it hasn’t worked, not because he’s a bad player and you have to get rid of him. San Jose doesn’t make sense for Toronto, Leafs are in win now mode and San Jose can’t offer up anything to help the leafs win right now

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JuanDamienNebraska</b></div><div>Let me spell it out for you.
Tkachuk wanted out, did not have any trade protecting clauses, was a pending RFA, and was willing to do a sign and trade. All of those factors maintained his value and gave CGY flexibility. He was completely on board with doing all that he can to maintain his already existing value while progressing a trade; and that’s what happened.
Marner is an expiring UFA, who will make more than Tkachuk does in a year from now, who wants to stay in TOR, and who has a NTC that can make sure that stays the case. He can essentially choose the team that he will be traded to. Said team will recognize that and adjust their offer accordingly. Or Marner can simply walk in a year, leaving TOR completely empty handed.
Very simple. If you can’t understand how TOR has less leverage than CGY did then there is simply no helping you. I bid you good day.</div></div>
When a player, refuses to play for a team anymore, what leverage does the team have???? NONE.
I wouldn’t bother to respond. You’re having a tough time with this concept

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JuanDamienNebraska</b></div><div>A player that wants out, is an RFA, and is willing to do a sign and trade gives a GM more to work with than a player with a NTC that doesn’t want out and can simply walk as a UFA in a year. That’s pretty simple to comprehend.</div></div>
You’re right, it is basic and you can’t seem to grasp it. Player wants out, means team takes what they can get for player because he doesn’t want to play for your team.
If you can’t understand the most basic concept here it’s not even worth talking about

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JuanDamienNebraska</b></div><div>Tkachuk wanted out of CGY. Marner more than likely wants to stay in TOR and can if he chooses so. Marner has the power. Tkachuk is also a more intriguing, playoff built player who was signed longterm for cheaper than Marner will be. If you think Marner is fetching this kind of a return then you will be disappointed.</div></div>
Players wanting out do not give the teams more leverage lmao, that’s beyond backwards.
“Mitch wants to stay in Toronto, therefore I don’t have to pay as much to get him” is what your logic is lmao

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Cameron_Cobb</b></div><div>These leafs fans need to stop. Two high draft picks. A good forward prospect. A great defense prospect. A excellent goalie prospect. A solid offensive veteran and graves can be very solid defensively. All of this together is way too much for a 4th and a guy who honestly was a clown in the playoffs this year. And at that he is on an expiring contract. Marner is and excellent producer in the regular season but he is not gonna be the difference maker in the pens and he is definitely not worth all that</div></div>
Mitch Marner if a 2x first team all star, over a point per game in his career, selke finalist who is in the middle of the prime of his career. The leafs are NOT rebuilding and are NOT interested in projects like owen Pickering and 2 guys drafted in the 4th and 6th round of the draft, hoping and praying that they can play more than 20 NHL games in their lives. Rielly Smith is a middle 6 winger who scored at a 3rd line winger pace, Leafs don’t need more of that. And if Ryan Graves is an offensive defenceman, he’s pretty damn bad at that recording just 15 points last year, Connor Timmins had 10 in 25 games and isn’t making 4.5 million
Quantity doesn’t equal quality. I’m sure you wouldn’t trade a 37 year old Sidney Crosby for Connor Timmins, Fraser Minten, Ty Voit, Arthur Akhytamov and a 1st

The only piece the Leafs would have interest in there is the 1st. I honestly don’t think the pens could come up with a deal that would be worth it for Marner that didn’t include Crosby, and we all know that’s a non starter
