This doesn’t make us competitive. The idea of retaining on Gaudreau is ridiculous. Gaudreau is not going anywhere and it certainly would not be Carolina. Laine is a difficult player to trade. I would rather buyout Elvis than attach a potentially valuable asset to him.

Canes accept and are glad to do business with a division foe. Canes would be getting Johnny at 5x5.55aav with the retention and Blue Jackets would essentially be getting Necas at 11.3M (factoring in the retention) for the first 5 years before it dropped to the actual 7.1M number.

Takes a much better offer to dump Elvis. On top of that, Chicago doesn't have an open roster spot for him.

Canes would? Aging small winger isn’t what we need

Yeah, but you can't beat that contract. 6 years for what would be one of the best contracts in the league. Also, Johnny could be free to be Johnny in CAR. He's not the main focus like he is with CBJ. He'll have more open ice in CAR to do what he does.

Gaudreau on that contract immediately becomes one of the best non-RFA/ELC contracts in the league lol

How is trading the jackets two best forwards make them competitive? How does retaining that much on Johnny make the competitive? Johnny is not getting dealt especially with that much retention

Hawks don't take that contract for anything less than Columbus' unprotected first this year

I'd agree it's not a perfect fit, but I just don't think you can pass up a top 6 winger at that price. Would leave them with Svech, Jarvis, Johnny H, and Guntzel (assuming he's re-signs) as a very very solid top 6 group of wingers. Would also free up a little more $ to reinvest in the defense.

Those trades kind of run the gamut. The Merzlikins trade is way too good for us, the Laine trade is meh, and the Gaudreau trade is terrible for us. And I don't want us to be the ones paying Reinhart stupid money for a career year; I'd rather we just keep Johnny.
