FANTILLIS ROOKIE STATS AND DEPTH CHART

Created by: Bluejackets2000
Team: 2023-24 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 20, 2023
Published: Jul. 20, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I am just wondering how Fantilli's rookie numbers will compare?
SILLINGER 79 GP / 16 G / 15 A / 31 P
JOHNSON 79 GP / 16 G / 24 A / 40 P (his 1st real/full season)
MARCHENKO 59 GP / 21 G / 4 A / 25 P
LAINE 73 GP / 36 G / 28 A / 64 P (with Winnepeg)

I am predicting he gets the most CBJ points in rookie season, beating Dubois' 48.
I also think he bests Marchenko's 21 goal record last year so he gets: 73 GP / 23 G / 30 A / 53 P

Also, this is my take on the depth chart starting the season, barring no personnel changes (trades) or injuries...
They start Fantilli slow in 3rd line role with experienced two-way wingers
Voronkov will probably stick around for a few games and be sent down to play until injuries/call up. Foudy and Bemstrom are on the outside looking in, maybe sent down or claimed in waivers. Really I do not care. Their ship has sailed long ago.
Danforth gives a better scoring and more tenacious checking option on the 4th line
The top 2 lines will score
The bottom 2 lines will get their fair share of goals, but be good checking lines and build chemistry.
On D, we just need the crew to stay healthy. Jiricek may play a handful of games, but at the risk of losing somebody for nothing, he probably will be sent down and Peeke/Gudsy rotate 3 RD spot. I can see them keeping 8 D on the opening night roster to not lose any to waivers.
Babs will need to get all 12 focused on a defensive first, situational awareness, and responsible mindset first (Marchenko, Chinakov, Laine, etc.) while still focusing on scoring the puck.
In goal is a complete crap-shoot. I have no idea or confidence what is going to transpire there.

For Fantilli I just hope he gets a top 6 role from Babs, and if he's playing with those guys he should be in the 45-55pt range but anything over 40 I would consider a great start to a career.

Are you sure fantilli even makes the team? Jackets are not a good team currently, centre is tough position to learn, he did not impress in world juniors imo - best on best in his age group - but you think he can jump into the nhl a year later and put up 50 points 🤔? 🤷🏻

Fantilli dominated college hockey. Put him on the 1st line & book him for 60pts!

Lack of depth to replace him at the NHL level between injuries and contract limits, plus Brad Larsen failing at managing the roster. Another important point is the loss of Jake Voracek, who essentially was his training wheels his rookie season (when he had no business in the NHL, either, really).

I think you're spot on with the Fantilli projection. I also think he'll be in the neighborhood of 25-30-55.

He'll get whatever he can handle. Just throwing him on the top line and letting him figure it out is a terrible development tactic though.

My guess is he'll nail down the second line center role in camp. Boone is too reliable on the dot and defensively to be displaced that soon, but I could see over the course of the season Fantilli getting more 1st line opportunities.

Lack of linemate and coaching support definitely had an impact, but I also want to add that I think his anticipation and skating made him noticeably a step behind all season. There were countless incidents where he got a late jump on a play and couldn't get into the right places.

He has a mature attitude and great work ethic, so I think he can spend some time in Cleveland over the next year or two and figure it out. He'll get callups and NHL games, but he needs time to really focus on his game.

I'm rooting for him. I hope he comes into camp this year and makes a statement and takes the 2C job, but if I'm being realistic, I just don't think it happens. I predict he'll get beat out by Vronk for the 3C job and start the year in the AHL.

Yes. He would have not signed and gone back to Michigan if they didn't plan on him being on the team.

5 pts in 7 games as a 17 yr old, getting used as a 3rd liner... Yes so unimpressive 🤦😂

It is unimpressive, not because he’s not a good player who may turn out be a really good nhler but.. given his age and where he played and his performance in world juniors (3rd liner as you noted) - tough to see him jumping into nhl right away and being effective.

Imagine how that conversation goes. "Hey Adam, we know you have a great situation in Michigan where you can play with your future teammate Gavin Brindley and take a shot at winning a National Championship, but we'd love it if you gave that up to grind it out in Cleveland while we run one of the worst center groups in the league night after night in Columbus. Oh and this will make it easier for us to slide your ELC an extra year too." Can you really say you'd be interested in that in his shoes?

By the time season is up and running he'll be 19, so 2 years of growth...to say he's been unimpressive at any point is a joke.

Bud, you’re a joke. No one is questioning his ability; pretty rare bad players get drafted 3rd overall. Just questioning if he is at a point in his developmental curve to jump into a full time nhl role. Vast majority of 1st rounders don’t join the league the year after they are drafted; Bedard totally dominated at world juniors so him I understand, Fantilli 🤷🏻time will tell . Maybe lay off the histrionics; I hope the kid does well (not against the Leafs) but in general

Ah, a Leafs fan. That explains the delusion. I'm sure if he had been drafted by TOR you'd be forecasting him as beating out Bedard for the Calder trophy this year.

He's not just in the majority of 1st rounders you mention. He's the 3rd OA pick (that should've been 2nd by the vast majority of scouts), in a stacked draft.

He has a late birthday, is 6'2" 195 and beats the crap out of everyone he plays against. So yeah, he's at a "point in his development curve" where he's ready to play in the NHL.

Yo, what’s with the hostility ? None of the top 5 from 1st round last year played significant time in the nhl last year (maybe Slaf and it was a mistake)… but they are still very, very good players. Time will tell but rushing a kid onto a bad nhl team (unless they are generational talents like bedard) doesn’t make sense to me but heh - Blue Jackets are a model organization 😏

I remember Nash well. He was a very patient guy, to a fault.
He would hang out on the TV timeout dot near the center red line to cherry pick outlet pass or wait for play to come back up ice.
Unfortunately, he treated his own defensive blue line like a huge crack in the ice...like it would cave in and he would sink to the bottom of the pond...so he really never saw the inside of his D zone.

You're comparing Fantilli to Slaf or any pick from last year's draft? That's your first issue.

Thinking the Blue Jackets have a terrible team because they finished 31st last year is your next one. I'm not trying to say they should've been cup contenders, but they should have at least been competing for a playoff spot. They were decimated by injuries and horribly coached. They've significantly improved the defense, coaching and center ice this offseason as well. If you were able to look at this roster without your Leafs glasses on, you'd see they have a lot of high-end talent. some crazy good prospects, and a good balance of toughness too.

The idea that you think Fantilli would be "rushed" onto an NHL roster is laughable. If you can't see or understand that he is an NHL ready talent, then there is nothing I can do for you. Just watch more hockey and hopefully someday you'll understand how players differ from each other.

You need to chill bud. So you are saying the top 5 picks from last year are all no good? None of them are in the league. Time will tell - I think Fantilli will struggle like pretty much all young players would if you jump from college freshman to nhl. And Columbus will not be in the playoffs - long way to go yet

Okay, so you both have salient points.
On the one hand, the Jackets have been known to rush prospects into the lineup, mostly in earlier years when their roster lacked bona fide skill/talent and they had very mediocre scouting, which put even more “pressure” on getting the young guns up and into games to prove themselves.

That being said, all of the NHL scouts, analysts, etc. have projected Bedard, Fantilli and Carlson to be NHL ready this year. Smart money says he plays from day one. And I think Babs will help put him in the right spot in the lineup for his development, similar to what Torts would do.

So how about let’s bury the hatchet, agree to disagree, and move on with our next posts?

One thing: Fantilli has an early birthday in terms of draft year. Late would be June/July/August.

You're projecting your own defensiveness. I'm chill as a cucumber. Just trying to counter incorrect speech with correct speech.

I didn't say none of those players were good, I said they don't compare to Fantilli coming out of the draft. He is clearly NHL ready and should be on the team out of camp. It's really not that complicated. If you disagree, that's fine. Time will indeed tell.
