Agree this isnt the Deal for Laff but do think NYI is ready to give up on him
Agree
I think MTL gives up its 5th OA pick and Jesse Ylonen then Laff is ours.
Whether NYR get Carlson, Michkov or Smith they get a talent who will likely surpass laff
Michkov is a way superior Goal Scorer but is a bigger gamble the cavoite being when he comes to NYR he'll be a 4th year pro joining Panarin and company.
He'll be much cheaper at a time when you'll be so tight on cash that you'll dream about years like this one lol
I think if you gave NYR an out with a similar level of Skill as Laff along with a guy who can atleast play his role in the middle 6 even if not at his level .
Then they'd atleast consider it
All that said , i wouldnt make that trade.
Just believe its possible given our history of overpaying for French players</div></div>

Seems like everyone is mostly commenting on the Laf trade so I've gone ahead and deleted it.
Then i tried ot OS him at 3.5 M which would cost the habs 1 second round pick......but it's not allowing me to do it for some reason.
I dint think the rangers would be able to match that offer and we get to keep the picks and Anderson which I originally included.
Edit: done and messages received
NYR will definitely not be able to offer that to Laf and Allen for a 4th is a.steal

As a hab fan I have to say your MTL trade doesn't seem reasonable.
As much as I believe the Jets will not get fair value there is still some respect amongst GMs for future transactions.
A 1st rounder needs to be in play to start things off
Then a roster C needs to go back to the Jets as their center depth would be seriously depleted.
After that you're looking at 1 ( maybe 2) mid range prospects to fill organizational needs.

Completely different situation.
1. Lindros hated Marcel Abut.
2. Quebec was a small market team at that point.
3. Montreal is HOCKEY MECCA. Bedard would be foolish not to cash in on this marketing cash cow.

If we get, lets say Bedard by lottery and than PLD through free agency. Would you consider trading a future 1st in order to get players who can fill in other spots.
What I'm mainly thinking here is how Montreal is severely lacking in RHD prospects, there happen to be two very talented RHD in this years draft (Sandin-Pellika & Reinbacher), and if our top six is locked in for the next decade we could trade the 2025 first we have in order to acquire one of those players and solidify the D-core?
Usually I really despise the idea of moving firsts like that during a rebuild but no guarantee those picks land us top 4-elite level defence talent, so why not move them to get the other pieces we need in this draft. Alternatively we could trade these picks to acquire otherwise unacquirable goaltending talent.</div></div>
I would also say don't give up on Barron just yet.
He's gonna have a breakout season next year.
He's has all the tools for top pairing.
He and Guhle will be our D core for years

Exactly
Drafting one of Bedard or Fantili would seriously reshape the habs mindset regarding the rebuild which would be lessened by 2 to three years.
Losing 1st rounders to shore up other holes just makes perfect business sense once you have your core established.

I would be in the camp of still going after PLD even if we get Bedard Fantili.
It would solidify our top 6 as mentioned above for A DECADE!!!!
Suzuki, Caufield, PLD, Dach, B.Fantili.....
Everything else would be secondary plug-ins as we make our way to the cup.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MisstheWhalers</b></div><div>I'm gonna have a good hearty laugh if thats what Dubois gets traded for.</div></div>
Prepare to start ROTFL.
when are people going to realize that the Jets have ZERO bargaining power when it comes to Dubois?????
The order of bargaining power when it comes to Dubois is as follows.
1. DUBOIS HIMSELF.... he and his agent command everything that moves forward at this point. From openly expressing a desire to play for the habs to to "in your face" signing a 1 year deal with the Jets....Dubois camp is in the driver's seat. Even if it's another team he's traded to ... he still holds command of the situation and sign ANOTHER 1 year deal till UFA status.
2. MONTREAL....Given the point above, Hughes will weaponize this in his favor and fleece the Jets to get a player who truly wants to play fir the habs.
3. ANY OTHER TEAM....points 1 and 2 make it clearly obvious that any other team negotiating with the Jets will
a. Have a clause to speak with Dubois camp first before any deal is finalized in order to get a read on his intentions and perhaps longevity with said club.
b. Once they figure out point that his interest would only be to sign a 1 year deal.....said team will also fleece the Jets in acquiring Dubois.
3. THE FANS..... whether it's this off-season or when he's a UFA.....the Montreal fan base has shown to be salivating at the opportunity to sign him. Not just because he's French Canadian but because he truly wants to play here. Montreal hasn't had someone openly willing to come to the team in forever.....think Tavars to Toronto
4. THE JETS......Face it.....no bargaining power whatsoever!!!! The longer they hold out on making this happen the worse it gets for them and they'll receive pennies on the dollar

It will take alot more than that offer to pry Laf from NY.
Think what Carolina did to us with Kotkaniemi.....somewhere around the 6 to 6.5 one year deal may do it and there is no way Hughes will do that.
Also I'm puzzled as to why people want to include Barron on trades???????
Our most glaring weakness is our right D and Barron is a right D, young, former 1st rounder, puck moving defenceman. You move him your left with Savard and Kovacevic......Barron isn't going anywhere

Buyouts - Can this be done
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>I tend to disagree with the math, when folks say "The cap is going up, and in this case 13m is coming off the books.
Well when the cap goes up, players get more money across the board, It just isn't free money
And money coming off the book. Well those players have to be replaced, and that costs cap, and if better players replace them, that might cost more than 13m.
Bettman has never been honest in his predictions for the NHL cap. He always over estimates it. Hey I hope it goes up a lot......that would could for the everyone associated with the NHL. But I certainly wouldn't screw up my future cap relaying on what Bettman. says.</div></div>
Bettman is never really that far off his predicted cap increases. But let's say he is off by 1 to 2 MIL over those two years......there is still 13 MIL coming off the books.
And to address your other point.
Those players should be replaced by our current prospect pool.
In 2 to 3 years guys like Maillioux, Hutson, Engstrom, Roy, Beck, Kidney, Heinneman, Mesar......the list goes on.
Should be making their steps into the NHL and all will be on team friendly entry level deals which certainly won't come close to the 13MIL coming off the books.
The point I'm trying to emphasize here is that this, like other posts in this thread, are all concernded about salary cap implications in a few years...
And the math simply shows it won't be an issue at all

Buyouts - Can this be done
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>As a rule, it's just wiser not have buyouts unless a team needs the cap space. In future years, the cap space on the buyouts might be needed Montreal should keep Hoffman and Armia for at the 23/24 season, even if means demoting them to the minors and playing youngsters.</div></div>
I understand your logic about the cap space being needed in future years and that's why I mentioned point 1b in my description. The cap is rising significantly in 24/25 season and again in 25/ 26 season. This is what analysts are all projecting.
But let add more to this point.
My ACGM is 11 MIL under the cap for next season. That's with price on LTIR
During the seasons while the cap is going up significantly ...we also have contracts coming off the books.
Ie Evans, Pitlick, kovacevic, Allen, Savard, Monahan
That's almost 13 MIL coming off the books between the 24/25 and 25/26 seasons. On top of the projected 9 to 10 MiL cap increase.
Kinda makes sense to me when were only the hook for 4MiL in dead cap space those seanons.

There are 18 other players on that bench including Wheeler, Schiefelle and Morrissey who are the leaders.

The rumors about the toxic environment in the Jets dressing room seem to have some merit from the looks of it.

Whats up Doc
Any trade for PLD will involve Dvorak.
Trading PLD would leave WPG way too thin at center so they would need a roster center coming back.
I also think this deal happens on Draft Day and will involve FLAs 1st rounder in 2023. If not I can't see WPG being ok waiting 2 years for a 1st round pick in this deal so it would most likely be MTL 2024 1st. (protected).
Also Smith is committed to Boston University for next season so he won't be in the AHL.
