Agree this isnt the Deal for Laff but do think NYI is ready to give up on him
Agree
I think MTL gives up its 5th OA pick and Jesse Ylonen then Laff is ours.
Whether NYR get Carlson, Michkov or Smith they get a talent who will likely surpass laff
Michkov is a way superior Goal Scorer but is a bigger gamble the cavoite being when he comes to NYR he'll be a 4th year pro joining Panarin and company.
He'll be much cheaper at a time when you'll be so tight on cash that you'll dream about years like this one lol
I think if you gave NYR an out with a similar level of Skill as Laff along with a guy who can atleast play his role in the middle 6 even if not at his level .
Then they'd atleast consider it
All that said , i wouldnt make that trade.
Just believe its possible given our history of overpaying for French players</div></div>
Hughes would absolutely get crucified if he did that. Laraque threw that idea outhere (trading 5th overall for Lafreniere) last week, and it wasn't well received at all.

He has just looked so good in the OHL. I feel like his approval into the league is just a formality at this point given what he's done to improve his character

Totally agree, my problem is that Barron is our only RHD that will be here long term (Savard will probably get traded and Mailloux is a question mark (Hoping on him though)). We could use a guy like Reinbacher or Sandin-Pellika to fit in the second pairing with Hutson.

I think the "..." part kinda encomases Slaf. Anyone who has given up on him however can (The following words would break capfriendly terms and conditions). He's only 19, haven't even played since turning 19. I think why people are hard on him comes from his status as first overall, but he's not even 20, having to transition from European to American style of play, and the first overall from a rather weak draft class. Need to let him develop first before casting any judgment ya know?

It would solidify our top 6 as mentioned above for A DECADE!!!!</div></div>
Exactly, Question for you then.
If we get, lets say Bedard by lottery and than PLD through free agency. Would you consider trading a future 1st in order to get players who can fill in other spots.
What I'm mainly thinking here is how Montreal is severely lacking in RHD prospects, there happen to be two very talented RHD in this years draft (Sandin-Pellika & Reinbacher), and if our top six is locked in for the next decade we could trade the 2025 first we have in order to acquire one of those players and solidify the D-core?
Usually I really despise the idea of moving firsts like that during a rebuild but no guarantee those picks land us top 4-elite level defence talent, so why not move them to get the other pieces we need in this draft. Alternatively we could trade these picks to acquire otherwise unacquirable goaltending talent.

Suzuki, Caufield, PLD, Dach, B.Fantili.....
Everything else would be secondary plug-ins as we make our way to the cup.</div></div>

While I'm not the biggest fan of the notion that we "need to pickup PLD" because Quebec born players in Montreal go burrrr, it would help round out our top six to get him (IN FREE AGENCY). The team has long since had Anderson on the trade block even if Hughes won't admit it, someone would need to fill his spot in 3-4 years regardless of a trade.

Buyouts - Can this be done
I did not realize that Armia's contract structure was such that the cap hit for his buyout next year would be 33k lol.
Can't help but wonder if someone makes use of that. Obv you have to deal with the fall out after but a tight against the cap team looking to take one more shot at a cup might find use for that.

You seriously don't think those picks and Slaf won't score more than Kaprizov on his own? I think this is one of those situations where the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. In other words, I don't think you are ever going to be satisfied with what we have or will have, so you are just going to keep dreaming that you can trade for elite talent and hope that what you give up doesn't turn out better, until it does.

This team is not one Konecny away from making the playoffs. That 2024's 1st is much too valuable to be sacrificed in return of a player who could test free agency in two years.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>willinlisbon</b></div><div>Any trade for PLD will involve Dvorak.
Trading PLD would leave WPG way too thin at center so they would need a roster center coming back.
I also think this deal happens on Draft Day and will involve FLAs 1st rounder in 2023. If not I can't see WPG being ok waiting 2 years for a 1st round pick in this deal so it would most likely be MTL 2024 1st. (protected).
Also Smith is committed to <strong>Boston University</strong> for next season so he won't be in the AHL.</div></div>

There is no reason to not qualify gurianov, if nothing else but to just to retain his rights... Hoffman isnt going anywhere, until they can retain half his salary at the TDL, armia is locked in on the 4th.
As for Beck, he isnt even the best player on his junior team so no that is not happening... and Roy i can't see being rushed up just because he's tearing up the Q. Why is every habs fan always so damn impatient and opposed to letting their prospects get seasoning in the AHL

This can't be rushed because MTL isn't just two pieces away, their two SUPERSTAR pieces away. And those type players only come by drafting, going by analytics that pick has to be a top 5 to safely get a star</div></div>
Thanks for your response.
I would counter that this team is a team that has all the components necessary to be a playoff team and just requires time and reps (keeping in mind that I think Monty is a fine goalie and I don't believe we need a Price to win the cup)
They will also have lots of prospects in the pipeline who will come up over the course of the next 2-3 years and challenge for spots or make it possible for them to trade players for assets as NYR have done with Dallas and now with Montreal (in my fantasy land).
Struble, Trudeau, Hutson, Engstrom, Mailloux, Roy, Mesar, Kidney, Kapanen, Dobes will all have a legit shot to make this team going forward and they will keep adding over the years.
Yes it's true this team will not have an Elite forward like McDavid or Bedard, but that isn't happening anyway and look at NYR. They have a good team and an Elite Defenseman and maybe an Elite goalie and a whole bunch of good-great players. They look like they can do some damage in these playoffs.

I've spent several minutes thinking about this overall scheme, and for the life of me, I can't imagine a worse strategic plan for Montreal than trading away both first-round picks in this draft. The fifth overall could well turn out to be a better player than the soon-to-be-available-for-free DuBois and the 17th overall could turn out to be a better player than Boeser. (The amusing part is that Vancouver would still say No.)

That 1st is nice but not enough for Winnipeg to take on a cap dump, a bad contract and a prospect with no value to them and Montreal isn't trading their first anyways.

Next season
Montreal says we're not giving away a top ten pick in a rebuild for a player that WILL COME TO US FOR FREE IN A YEAR. The rebuild is going to take time, getting PLD earlier than we should and at the cost of potentially core pieces doesn't help. He either will come to us, if so great, or he won't, if so we don't lose anything from him not coming to Montreal.
Vancouver says no.
