Caps would still decline. I for one am not a fan of Robertson (mainly due to his injury track-record at such a young age). Also, I just don't see his potential being a top 6 forward. But that is just me (granted, I do not watch the Leafs often so what do I know lol)
Genuine question - he just got sent down to the AHL...can you tell me why? This doesn't have anything to do with the trade above, but just curious why (especially since Leafs fans are asking for at least a 2nd in a trade return for him)

still the Caps likely decline. They believe (and reporters seem to agree) that they return a 1st for Dowd and at the moment, Robertson is not worth a 1st. retaining for more than this year, which they would have to do if they retain on Dowd, is also likely a deal breaker. They'll likely want to use their two remaining slots this year on Edmundson and Pacioretty, might want to use one on Jensen or TvR, and could be in a position to need all 3 slots next year as well with Oshie, Kuznetsov (maybe), and more expiring at the end of the year.

idk tbh I think a first for dowd is ridiculous but I think they gotta have a lot of interest in Robertson to do this

I understand we are desperate for a top-4 RHD but the truth is there aren't any that could be acquired without damaging the entire structure of our roster and collection - or lack thereof- of picks. The main source of this problem is our cap space.</div></div>
Cap space and the fact that Dubas overspent on deadlines. I agree with his ideals but is deviation to them hurt us. Foligno, Orielly, Marleau, etc ...) that limited our available draft picks needed in future years. Thankfully he was quick to somewhat help, Sandin, Engvall etc..

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kash</b></div><div>The retained salary is not 50%; it's a small percentage in order for Dowd to fit in our cap. I don't think you're inherently wrong - it's just a matter of how much you value Dowd: If Tanev, an aging top-4 RHDFD won't fetch a first; I don't see why an aging top-9 FWD would fetch one.</div></div>
You’re right I misread it it’s not 50, my bad.
The biggest thing is term. Dowd has this year and next with 1.3M against the cap, whereas Tanev is more expensive and has no term. Dowd is also legitimately one of the best defensive forwards in the league and can win faceoffs and PK (and he’s right handed which matters for some reason I guess idk).
I understand where you’re coming from, I think the thing that gets lost in the conversation is the caps can hold dowd if they want and go for a run next year which is very possible with the salary coming off the books this summer and the impending kuznetsov buyout. If it was Dowd with 50% retention for Robertson one for one, the caps would probably have to take that and run, but I don’t know that the leafs do. I have no idea how these two teams value these players honestly.

Peeke and Larsson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kash</b></div><div>Even though I don't believe Larsson is top-4 quality, I can't help but applaud teams like SEA and MTL; the definition of overselling your players (not a diss, because if they can fetch first rounders I'd truly be jealous). In my honest opinion, the market for a RHDFD for TOR is gone; Tanev was the only candidate and he's in DAL. At this point, TOR should just stack up on depth given their cap situation, available players, and assets to trade.</div></div>
I agree. The only trades I am willing to trade firsts for (despite other posts I have made as ideas) are for young players with great potential already on term and in the nhl. Top 1 I can think of is Chychrun but he is left handed and I can only imagine what Ottawa wants for him. Tanev was a good idea but not a needle mover. The best moves are depth moves and let our best players play it out. Most winning teams apply this model. Tampa (goodrow and Coleman were third liners) Pittsburgh (hainsey), Vegas (
Barbashev) limited moves to help the needle but make the starts do the work. (Colorado forgot their deadline move was similar)
Last year while yes O'Reilly was helpful was an overpay. McCabe has worked out in the long run it looks like thanks to the term. Schenn is the type of deadline move that works.

There is some sense when you look at JBDs stats in limited minutes. That being said, such a trade is a huge risk. And could backfire hugely for us I do admit as I did earlier.
As for Jensen, yea, it is hard to to get a player like him and a first is hight but the only way to even make the caps remotely interested is a 1st.

So many Leafs fans are fascinated with other teams Dmen, especially RHD. Dunn is probably the Kraken's best Dmen, but they next three Oleisak, Larsson and Borgen seem to be such difference makers to Leaf fans, they willingly to give up so much for them.
Look at the trade posted, the difference between Larsson and Liljegren sure isn't Robertson, Niemela, a first and third.
Never mind wanting Peeke, and expect him to be an upgrade over any Leafs

Peeke could be a good depth D for us but as a cap dump. Peeke has rarely played with worse stats than the Boosh. So to trade more for Peeke is non sensible. As for Larsson, sadly it would take a deal like this or more as Francis is currently not willing to trade Larsson. But I agree, his trade is an overpay as well.

Savard

Savard was an amazing DFD during his tenure at CBJ, but he's given up on defense and gone full OFD in MTL. Does he turn it around or change his style up in TOR? Too big of a risk, especially for a first rounder. I know it's odd to say Savard is now an OFD, but he has contributed decently offensively but his defensive quality has dropped down significantly.</div></div>
part of his defense dropping could be the fact that he's not on a good team, plus I think if he wasn't being relied upon in such a large role like he is he would be better defensively, he's usually out there trying to shut down the opposing teams top line(s)

I didn't think it was possible until I saw that Chris Johnston clip with Savard in their top three trade targets. Still unlikely, so you're probably safe on that front, although I don't think it would be that bad for Toronto given the quality of the late 1st rounders this year. Savard would bring some positive value in the playoffs at least.

LEAFS DEADLINE
The way Holmberg has played he shouldn't be moved. Rielly was again lost in his own zone, you would think this long in the league he would start to figure out that he doesn't chase the guy crossing the front of the net that is Bush guy to leave the backdoor play wide open. He has the least d-zone IQ of any d-man on the team.

I don't necessarily see them having an issue taking him back, I just don't see why a team like the Leafs doesn't just bury him unless the concern is the number of contracts. It was always amusing listening to Randy Hahn (Sharks broadcaster) sounding excited when Gregor was on a breakaway...he generated a lot of chances, but they almost never actually went in. It was among the many drinking games Sharks fans have. Some of the others:
Referring to the Coyotes as the Desert Dogs (Randy is aware of this one and has in the past just said, "Desert Dogs, Desert Dogs, Desert Dogs" to mess with us)
When playing the Jets, refer to Westside Story (they haven't made the reference in a few years so this one's kind of died out).
"Icing on the power play, that's never a good thing."
"Long Beach Native Matt Nieto."

I agree that the trade is fine, but why do so many people want to send Gregor back to San Jose? They declined to issue him a QO to retain his rights and his cap hit could be completely buried. I know the Leafs are at 48/50 contracts, but the other trades would net them 2 additional contract slots.

Not to mention al this while losing almost no draft picks and getting a real top 4 right hand defense with term!
Such a joke!</div></div>
Defense isn't just about hitting guys and not having turnovers. Brodie (21:54) and Lijegren (19:27) both have a much higher TOI than Borgen (17:31). Brodie also blocks more shots and has more takeaways. All of this doesn't even consider what it does to a locker room or team chemistry when you throw a blender at it right before playoffs. Just saying the picture is bigger than the one you present.
