Description
I've come to terms with what the Leafs SHOULD do come trade deadline:
1. Treliving is not giving up the first for a rental, and there are no good RHD in the market with multiple years on their contract - and even if there was, there is not a lot of cap space to pull such thing off.
2. Savard and Larsson are terrible and should not warrant a first - it would be an absolute fleece by MTL and SEA. Borgen is decent, but not worth the price: He's a third-pairing defenseman on a down-year.
3. The best the Leafs can do to at least prepare for playoff time is acquiring solid depth pieces that will contribute to the team.

TOR-PIT:
Chad Ruhwedel is a great bottom-pairing defenseman and his asking price shouldn't be too high considering he is in a depth role. Kyle Dubas himself acquired both Timmins and Niemela during his tenure in TOR, so he is familiar with his return: a B prospect along with a though injury-prone; top-6 TWD, whose contract expires after next season.

TOR-WSH:
Reports claim Nic Dowd is fetching a first - and in my honest opinion, Dowd is an amazing top-9 C but he is not worth that. TOR doesn't let go of Nick Robertson because he isn't NHL level, or that he doesn't have potential; it's the fact that he has not been given the right opportunity to develop into that top-6 potential which he definitely does have. The truth is he won't get the role he deserves here in TOR, and it would be doing right by him to trade him to a team that can. TOR gets a great depth piece for the playoffs and WSH gets a young promising winger looking to breakout. The late 2nd is included because I truly feel Nick Robertson has significantly more value than Nic Dowd and the Leafs need to at least make the trade more fair. A 3rd instead of a 2nd? Perhaps...

Caps decline. They're paying to acquire Robertson and then throwing in a 50% retained Dowd for free? Robertson isn't worth a first round pick plus. He's a valuable player and I personally would love to acquire him, but this trade just is poor asset management from the caps perspective.

The retained salary is not 50%; it's a small percentage in order for Dowd to fit in our cap. I don't think you're inherently wrong - it's just a matter of how much you value Dowd: If Tanev, an aging top-4 RHDFD won't fetch a first; I don't see why an aging top-9 FWD would fetch one.

You’re right I misread it it’s not 50, my bad.

The biggest thing is term. Dowd has this year and next with 1.3M against the cap, whereas Tanev is more expensive and has no term. Dowd is also legitimately one of the best defensive forwards in the league and can win faceoffs and PK (and he’s right handed which matters for some reason I guess idk).

I understand where you’re coming from, I think the thing that gets lost in the conversation is the caps can hold dowd if they want and go for a run next year which is very possible with the salary coming off the books this summer and the impending kuznetsov buyout. If it was Dowd with 50% retention for Robertson one for one, the caps would probably have to take that and run, but I don’t know that the leafs do. I have no idea how these two teams value these players honestly.

Nic Dowd is the best depth forward in the league no doubt, I don't blame WSH for selling high on him because that's exactly what they need to do, it's just as a Leafs fan I wouldn't feel comfortable giving up a 1st for him. Robertson for Dowd I'm all for because keeping Nick would ruin not only his value as a young winger but also his development as a potential top-6; I may have asked for too much with the 2nd rounder but maybe a pick WSH is willing to compromise alongside Dowd would make it seem like a fair trade for everyone.
