TBL gave Vas a long term deal and it seemed to workout pretty well for them. I don't think FLA would complain with Bob on a long-term deal, nor would WPG w/ Hellebuyck. Bruins gave Rask a long-term deal and I think it turned out pretty well. It all depends on when you give a goalie his long-term deal. If you're giving a 7/8 year deal to a 30yr old goalie, then ya its pretty much doomed. Giving a proven 25yr old goalie a long-term deal doesn't carry nearly the same level of risk/concern.

does this get the convo started
Not likely. DeBrusk rights have almost no value, maybe a 6th or 7th rounder. For EDM probably even less see as he's a local kid and his Dad's ties to the team. Merk is still an unknown, the 1st is going to be a late one if Bruins add Leon. Swayman has the most value in this deal, but even he's due for a new contract which is likely to be $7 million+

And even at 8yrs the deal take him till he's 33yr old. He'd still be at worst (barring some career altering injury) an average starting goaltender.

Why wouldn't the Bruins give Swayman an 8yr contract? He's only 25yrs old and not even in his prime yet. Since breaking into the league he ranks (min 100gp)
SV% - T3rd
GAA - 2nd
SO - 10th
He's arguably a top 5 goalie in the NHL and he's having a monster playoff run and a MASSIVE reason Boston even got out of the first round.

(Never said it was likely one)

So you created a wild unrealistic scenario where a 40pt player commands the same cap hit as an 80pt player. You'd have been more realistic if you said Swayman becomes the highest paid goalie in the NHL.

I think we add one of our waiver exempt goalies in that scenario. But I read it as conditional 1st/2nd…which isn’t very far off fron what I’d expect. Protected 1st…or 2nd+

DeBrusk isn't getting Nylander money lol. Nylander had more points this season than DeBrusk has had the past two seasons combined lol. Nylander has put up 80+ points in 3 straight seasons....DeBrusk has put up 40+ points in 3 straight seasons. DeBrusk is worth $6 million a year.

Blow it up usually means you trade everything and go into a rebuild. You've kept the best players and signed more. This isn't a blow up, it's a re-tool

I'm not even sure that's a good starting point. 1st + Poitras + Lohrei would probably be a good starting point.

Skip the Trenin signing, put Holtz in that spot.
Skip Minnesota deal
But Bahl at 3LD
We don’t need to make a ton of moves. We were a 112 point team last season with significant injury issues this year. Add a cheap veteran or two for bottom-6….add a defensive dman…and improve in net.

Only way Boston trades Ullmark for a 2nd + 4th is if they are desperate for cap space.

I wouldn't say that. If a few of the younger guys make the jump from the AHL (Lysell / Merkulov) then it saves the Bruins cap space. Even with a Swayman extension and say Elias Lindholm signing, they could still keep Ullmark on the roster.

Ullmark for Mercer Guentzel Signing
I'd think the base for an Ullmark deal would be similar to what COL paid for Kuemper, which was a 1st + 3rd + Timmins (2nd rounder drafted a few years prior). With that said, Mercer is worth more than the package that Kuemper returned.

Boston has some significant holes on theirs too with the 21 million they have.

The Bruins have $21.7 million in cap space going into next off-season with the following already under contract:
Marchand - Coyle - Geekie
??? - Zacha - Pastrnak
??? - Frederic - ???
Lauko - Beecher - Brazeau
Lindholm - McAvoy
Lohrei - Carlo
Wotherspoon - Peeke
Ullmark
???
-Poitras will likely slot into the 3rd line C role next season and has a $870k cap hit
New Cap Space: $20.8 million
-Lysell put up a solid year in Providence and could slot into middle 6 role with a $863k cap hit
New Cap Space: $19.9 million
I'm still in the boat that Swayman is going to get around $7 million a year on an 8yr deal
New Cap Space: $12.9 million
So let see where we sit now:
Marchand - Coyle - Geekie
??? - Zacha - Pastrnak
Frederic - Poitras - Lysell
Lauko - Beecher - Brazeau
Lindholm - McAvoy
Lohrei - Carlo
Wotherspoon - Peeke
Swayman
Ullmark
Lets factor $1 million per the healthy scratches of the roster. The Bruins are sitting just shy of $10 million in cap space and would be looking for a top 6 winger. $7 million could land a pretty solid winger for the top 6.
Marchand - Coyle - Geekie
($7M) - Zacha - Pastrnak
Frederic - Poitras - Lysell
Lauko - Beecher - Brazeau
Lindholm - McAvoy
Lohrei - Carlo
Wotherspoon - Peeke
Swayman
Ullmark
Extra FWD ($1M)
Extra DEF ($1M)
Extra FWD/DEF ($1M)
Cap Sapce: Roughly $2.9 million

Quoting: NHLfan10506

1. It’s hard to compare drafts from that sense. I agree that 2024 appears to be a weaker cohort, but from trade perspective, it still holds a similar place in draft. Boston would likely agree (if they agree) with the premise that certain guys are available (ie, if Eiserman or Lindstrom or whomever are available at #10).
2. That off-season (and following one) all NHL teams had compliance but-outs due to the lowering of the cap from the new CBA (was a lockout at beginning of 2012-13 season). Luongo’s AAV was a concern in that tighter cap period, but there were also teams that thought he could be bought out, placing him on the market for free. No one expected Vancouver to trade Schneider.
3. If they keep Swayman, Ullmark then they likely lose Bussi for nothing as he would have to pass through waivers next year (unless they trade him).

Based on what? He's got exactly ZERO games in the NHL under his belt. He was ok but not great in Providence this year (DiPietro had better numbers for Providence). What team is going to put a claim in on an unproven goalie knowing they have to keep him on the NHL roster all season?
