New bottom 6 and trading down with STL

Team: 2024-25 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: May 1, 2024
Published: May 10, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In a perfect world, MBN falls to 16 and makes an impact in camp right away to make the team. In the case MBN is off the board at 16 I’m all for NJD grabbing Greentree, Chernyshov, or even reaching for Charlie Elick (great skater, great size, closes gaps well, RHD, heavy hitter, good stick, gets shots in low from the blue line, bully in front of his own net… I get that his ceiling may not be as high as other D men in this draft currently, but he’s the kind of player every team needs and I think he should be ranked way higher than early-mid 2nd round).

Toropchenko is hard to give up, but if the right defensemen were available at 10 still then I would do it.

It would probably take one of Buium or Dickinson to be available there for me to be happy with the Blues giving up that much to jump to number 10. Toropchenko has been a really solid player for us the last couple of years. One of the few where his compete level is always there.

Raw value is probably not too far off, but MN is planning to extend Middleton this summer, so doubt he can be had without an overpay. Guerin loves him.

Simplify.

Skip Nashville deal
Nix Sherwood signing

Hang on to Clarke, give MBN a year or two
No Kastelic, promote Halonen

Take Holtz and Farinacci out of Ullmark deal
Skip the Trenin signing, put Holtz in that spot.

Skip Minnesota deal
But Bahl at 3LD

We don’t need to make a ton of moves. We were a 112 point team last season with significant injury issues this year. Add a cheap veteran or two for bottom-6….add a defensive dman…and improve in net.

Yeah I agree with this assessment. I would hold tight and trade the first back to make some small improvements to bottom six and get a good forward prospect. NJD fans should only be concerned if injuries plague next season as well.

I would rather have Sherwood.

The cheap veteran(s) would be Trenin and Sherwood…
The defensive D man would be Middleton…

Only way Boston trades Ullmark for a 2nd + 4th is if they are desperate for cap space.

Not sure Sherwood improves upon Bastian. But I do like many of the players you have added, I just think it can be accomplished with fewer steps.

Instead of STL and BOS deals…trade back with MIN and add Middleton and Gustavsson.

If we keep our 1st…let them develop…preserve their slides.

If we are trading away younger assets like Clarke and Foote…deal ‘em for 2025 and 2026 picks to stockpile ammo at future deadlines.

Debrusk gets Nylander money!!

I think we add one of our waiver exempt goalies in that scenario. But I read it as conditional 1st/2nd…which isn’t very far off fron what I’d expect. Protected 1st…or 2nd+

And even then, the concept of them trading him to a team with NJ’s upside is slim. If it’s a 2nd instead of a 1st, I don’t even think Jersey’s a consideration

If either are available, GMs should be fired. If they were, Jersey should immediately offer a package for Ullmark centered around Seamus Casey and pick one of them

DeBrusk isn't getting Nylander money lol. Nylander had more points this season than DeBrusk has had the past two seasons combined lol. Nylander has put up 80+ points in 3 straight seasons....DeBrusk has put up 40+ points in 3 straight seasons. DeBrusk is worth $6 million a year.

Was just creating the scenario where Bruins are desperate for cap space.

(Never said it was likely one)

So you created a wild unrealistic scenario where a 40pt player commands the same cap hit as an 80pt player. You'd have been more realistic if you said Swayman becomes the highest paid goalie in the NHL.
