Calgary only considers this if Cayden Lindstrom is still available when Montreal's pick is on the board.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KingofRnR</b></div><div>Meh, I think Graves is worth what Zadorov fetched, especially given he has term, but I’d be happy to pay less for sure
Yeah that works too. I just started with Markstrom and added another decent piece to entice LAK, but then figured we needed a prospect back if we were parting with Sharky. I guess I was thinking if we couldn’t get a favourable extension done with Sharangovich, we’d move him in a Trade for a Big & Skilled Physical Centre</div></div>
The problem with Graves' contract is he has too much term. 2 years would ideal, 3 would be ok, 5 is 2 years too long.
And yeah if we can't get Sharky extended without overpaying then we should trade him but that's a decision that should be deferred until sometime next year... Unless of course we get a terrific offer for him now.

I think most pundits are going to be very surprised at how soon both players go. Most have Yakemchuk ranked a lot lower than on the list above. Fact is the best GMs know intangibles like size, grit, physical play and yes even hockey pedigree (Tij being Jarome's son) are important too it isn't just about who scored the most points or who those same pundits have deemed to be the "most skilled" or BPA in junior.

Weaponize the Cap Space
Calgary shouldn't consider taking on Graves' contract (5 years left) unless he comes with 20-25% retention. That contract is either too much money or about 2 years too long (take your pick) to fit Calgary's future needs.
I'd rather offer Tanev 2 years at 4.5 mil/yr than take on 5 years of Graves at the same cap hit.

Why do you have Pittsburgh getting assets for dumping a contract? With all that term left on his contract Calgary would want retention on Graves to take him even just for future considerations.
I'd rather keep Sharky. Make it Markstrom + Mangi with retention on Mangi. Probably need to remove Pinelli too for LA to consider it.

I hope he doesn't because when Calgary's pick comes around if Iginla isn't still available Yakemchuck is the guy I'd want them to pick. If Iginla is still there too then it'd be a tough choice for me between the two of them.

Flames trade if iginlas still available
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>penguinswin</b></div><div>It's not the worst Markstrom trade proposal I have seen on here. Depends on what you think of Holtz</div></div>
The proposal isn't bad in fact it's pretty good. I was responding to the guy who said "another day another horrible Markstrom to NJD trade".
At this point I'd rather get Holtz than Mercer. Mercer isn't looking like a top 6 center but Holtz is bigger, a few months younger, probably the better goal scorer and better on the wing. Holtz also has another year left on his entry level contract while Mercer is RFA now.
The value of NJ's 2024 1st has also gone up from what it was before the trade deadline when acquiring Markstrom was expected to improve them enough to just make the playoffs or just miss them meaning the pick would be around 16th/17th OA instead of 10th OA. That makes it worth Calgary adding Vancouver's late 1st.
Note: before NJ fans go crazy about Holtz' value now that I said I'd rather have him it isn't that Holtz' value has gone up it's that Mercer's value has gone down. Mercer's potential isn't what most thought it was a year or even just a few months ago.

1. Not unless Conroy likes Kasper a whole lot more than I do.
2. Probably. It depends on how much Calgary likes Geekie.
3. Nope, probably not even without the retention. Kuzmenko has been a good fit so far, Calgary will want to see how he looks next year.
4. No. It'll take more than just a late 1st (Florida's 2026 1st) to take on Anderson and Gallagher. You're not dealing with Bonehead Brad in Calgary anymore talk to Toronto instead.
5. Probably not. Bourque isn't bad but he's small, the Flames want to get bigger not just younger and Coleman is one vet they should keep unless they get a terrific offer.
6. Absolutely not!
7. Not even close to gettting Andersson.
8. Hard to say, depends on how the Flames project Klapa's future in Calgary.

Possible Playoffs
Calgary has no use for a bottom pair (if that) defenseman. They already have plenty of players on better contracts to compete for the 5th/6th/7th spot on defense. So many they'll probably wind up waiving a few after training camp.

Finish the Roster
Terrible for Calgary. A pair of overpaid pending UFAs the Flames don't want, a marginal defenseman and a winger who wouldn't make the roster in Calgary wouldn't get anything from Calgary. You'd have to pay us something pretty significant to even consider taking that package.

If it was the last year of his contract, then I could see a package similar to Hanifin.
We also have no use for Jarnkrok, because we already have 13 forwards signed for next year, and we need to make spots for Coronato, and Pelletier. With Schwindt, and Klapka fighting for 4th line duty.</div></div>
A lot light but otherwise I agree.

1. I assume you mean to sign Tanev as a UFA. That could work if the AAV and term aren't excessive.
2. Calgary would certainly accept that but NJ won't be offering Nemec.
3.Calgary should be willing to do that, dunno about Seattle though.
4.Probably needs some retention on Josh Anderson.
5. Haha they do but not even they would take on any of those 4 players unless they're found not guilty since they'll almost certainly be banned from the NHL if they're found guilty.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kman0101</b></div><div>Consider something. You need to make the playoffs... and you have a 10M anchor in Huberdeau. Mitch will get Huberdeau to 75-80 pts/year just by walking into the room which helps the team. Plus his own 80-90 pts.
He's getting a lot of flak, but he is a GREAT player.</div></div>
Keep your "GREAT player" Calgary doesn't want him. Huberdeau needs players who go to the tough parts of the ice for him to pass the puck to not a soft perimeter passer. A big physical center to provide net front presence and a speedy winger who can stretch the defense are what worked with Huberdeau in Florida.
Calgary isn't likely to make the playoffs next year unless they somehow manage to pick up that physical net front presence top 6 center, a top 4 defenseman or two and maybe a top 6 sniper with speed. Getting all that this summer is very highly unlikely even without wasting valuable cap space on Marner.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Augustus</b></div><div>It's a moot point, Samsonov is a UFA-to-be anyway and doesn't need to be traded for. His presence in this deal doesn't mean a thing when it comes to evaluating it. It becomes Markstrom (50% retention), Andersson and a 2025 2nd for 7th OA 2024 and a 5th. Doesn't cut it.
If it was just Markstrom and Andersson leaving, no retention, it would be tempting to get another top 10 pick, Alberta boy Carter Yakemchuk may just be available at 7th, another right shot D to go along with Hunter B in the prospect pool. But I'd want something a little more than a 5th rounder in addition to that.</div></div>
Yup UFA Samsonov doesn't add or subtract any value.
Tempting but not enough, especially not with 50% retention on Markstrom for 2 years. With a little luck plus some poor scouting by teams picking before us 7th + 10th might be enough to get both Iginla and Yakemchuk.
