Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MitchJr</b></div><div>I don’t see how you think the timelines align. Ducks are ~ 3 years from realistically competing & Marner is in his prime now. I think the Ducks would be better to sign short term vet FAs, take their lumps and let promising young core develop. Maybe a few years from now - make a big trade but seems too early to me</div></div>
if they get him with an 8 year extension, while having a year left, then 3 years from now they'll have 6 years left of Marner, as he's 29-30 years old, which is a bit older than you'd like but guys like Marner aren't available often and getting him still in his prime most likely for a few years when they're competitive could be worthwhile

yeah, I highly doubt he waives for anyone, but thought it'd be a fit for the ducks on the chance he would waive for them

Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MitchJr</b></div><div>I mean - no law against posting trades but 🤦🏻. Why would either team do this? Why would Marner waive to join a rebuilding team (in a contract year)? Why would Marner agree to waive and then extend in Anaheim? Why would a rebuilding team move assets for a player like Marner when they are far from competitive window? I could keep going but… you get the message</div></div>
Anaheim are reportedly looking for a top 6 RW, and while they're bad now if all Marner cares about is getting paid Anaheim is the place for him (idk if he does but it's possible), while the Ducks can't possibly get any worse and have a very promising future with the abundance of prospects they've drafted/acquired. They move on from Vatrano and Gibson who are both unlikely to be around when the team is at its best, a young depth forward whose had injury problems but has been solid when healthy, a defensive prospect whose not necessarily got a spot going forward, and some picks that likely aren't good enough to make them regret getting Marner and Liljegren.
As for the leafs, they get a goalie on a reasonable deal assuming he can bounce back, which I think he can given how bad the team infront of him has been, a hyman-esque winger in Vatrano whose cheap, and 2 young players that could develop into full-time NHLers if they're not there already, plus some picks to restock the prospect cupboards or acquire other pieces, while clearing up cap space to add in free agency / trades

Questions for my fellow Habs fans
I'm skeptical on Reinhart because he's broke out in a contract year, which in the past has happened a lot and then the player gets paid and drops back to their former self, if Reinhart's not scoring 50+ goals then I don't think he's worth 10+ million, I looked at Reinhart as a really intriguing option last summer (looking ahead at the upcoming FA crop) but I think he's priced himself out of interest to me, I just don't trust that he'll score as much. His career shooting % before this season was 14.2%, this season he scored 24.5% of his shots, that's unsustainable, just like Kuzmenko last year who shot 27.3% and with the Canucks this season only shot 12.7%, he's bounced back in Calgary to 24.1%, but the point is had he shot his career average percentage he'd have 33 goals, a drop of 24 goals, and a player with 33g 37a 70points isn't worth 10+ million, but he'll get it and whoever pays it to him better hope his shooting % stays above 20%.
That being said, if Jake Guentzel hits the market we better make an attempt to get him, everyones biggest concern with him was how good is he without Crosby, well this season the answer is 0.43 points per game better without "the guy that carried him." The only downside with Guentzel is that he's a little older, but I think he'll still be productive 6-7 years from now

Truly abysmal overpay for an average 30 year old dman 🤦🏻</div></div>
advanced stats would say otherwise but they're not everything, I think he'd be a good fit next to Rielly but as I said, I'm not a leafs fan so my opinion of the team doesn't really matter

It'd be one thing if Montreal signed the contract, but they didn't, sure Laine makes more but Montreal didn't choose how much he makes, and could reset the "pecking order" when Laine's deal is up, or Laine proves he deserves to be the highest paid player on the team (unlikely imo but not impossible) and the "pecking order" is adjusted to have Laine be at the top. Just because Suzuki is the captain doesn't mean he <i>has</i> to be the highest paid on the team, I think most captains aren't the highest paid on the team

Whatever Part 2
retaining on anderson and not getting anything of real value to Montreal isn't that appealing, ik Smith is good but he's older than our core and won't bring much of a return in a trade because Montreal couldn't retain on him if we do so on Anderson

Chytil MTL 24-25
the 1st should be conditional on if he plays, giving up a 1st for a guy that may never play again (or very little) isn't something that makes sense for any team. I'd say a 3rd, which upgrades to a 2nd if he plays 60+ games OR scores 40+ points, and upgrades to a 1st if both conditions are met, something like that where the Rangers still get value regardless of what Chytil does but the return grows the more and better he plays

No Necas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BadaBing</b></div><div>I believe that a trade is possible but the ask is big. Habs paid a 1st and 2nd for Newhook. I think if you remove either the 2nd or 3rd pick in this trade it`s done</div></div>
necas is a better player than Newhook was tho, sure Harris and Armia have value but I doubt that it's much more than a 2nd and 4th combined, and Canes fans won't like that trade at all. I think that's probably a bit less than what Necas is worth, but it really depends how Carolina value Armia and Harris.

Hronek probably stays in Vancouver if he's willing to sign that contract, but supposedly his demands are 7-8 mil per year long-term and that's why Vancouver hasn't extended him yet

We will take sorokin
he certainly isn't available, Varlamov has been on a really good run recently and that's why Sorokin isn't starting, he'll be the starter again next year if not by the end of the playoffs, Varlamov is old too so there's not much sense in trading the younger elite goalie when they'll need a new guy in 2/3 years if Sorokin were to be traded

Anderson cap dump
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>People think of a "cap dump" as a player with a high cap hit who's no longer worth that amount. That's incorrect . . . or, at least, incomplete. The definition of a "cap hit" is a player who is no longer worth his cap hit <strong>which is a burden to his team because it brings them too close to the cap ceiling</strong>. You have $20 million in cap space here and plenty of open roster slots, so Anderson isn't a burden that way, either. I think that it's foolish to expend resources getting rid of a contract which may be a visual annoyance but is little more. Even buying him out is preferable to this, no matter what the cost is.
I've had this discussion previously with Habs fans who say But we need the cap space that would be taken up by Anderson's buyout down the line 2, 3, 4 seasons from now to re-sign x, y or z. I think you can afford to wait to cross that bridge when, and if, you get there.</div></div>
a man with logic, not too many of them around here.
