Complete Rebuild - Cooley Jiricek 3rd OA Pick
Columbus isn’t moving that much for 2 seasons of Marner, he doesn’t make them a cup contender. Also Marner isn’t resigning with Columbus once he’s a UFA. When Marner was an RFA he basically said he wanted to be a Leaf and was using the potential offersheets to get more money from the leafs.

The Blow Up
You'd think there was some kind of rumor out there to support all these Marner to Columbus proposals. Sorry, but the Jackets need centers, not wingers. They'll do just fine with drafting Fantilli or Carlsson and keeping KJ.

Two big trades to improve defensively
chicago definitely takes that, probably an overpay, but not necessarily a bad one. the canucks one is interesting bc the cap for next year will be iffy for them but could potentially make sense. i like it

What couldve been
It doesn't excuse that the Gudbranson contract is not a good, but they signed him before they knew JG was serious about coming to Cbus. I try (empahsize *try*) to justify it in my head as "we replaced Bjorkstrand with JG," even if that's an oversimplified way to look at it.
Jarmo I think summed it up best when talking about trading Bjorky, but basically, when you get a chance to get a guy like JG to Columbus, you find a way to make it work. That it involved Bjorky hurts hard. I hope he kills it in SEA.
My 20/20 hindsight move would have been to have Laine file an arbitration claim, agree to terms with him on the same contract he signed anyway, then use the additional buy-out window to let Nyquist go.

I probs put Gus in on PP2 instead of Cole but I feel like this is the most likely scenario for lines.

Carrying Trades into the future

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>squashmaple</b></div><div>That Miller contract is regretted before the ink is dry. He's not a 99pt player. He's a player who scored 99 points once in a year when scoring was up across the league. And going into his 30s? Absolute albatross.</div></div>
If he's playing between Laine and Gaudreau he's going to be a 100 pt player. For at least the next 3-4 years, maybe 5. Sure the last year, maybe two could be rough, but that's how a lot of big contracts go. To sign star players, you usually have to give some term. 6 years really isn't that bad.

I’d go for it too. Maybe give Foudy a chance to prove it, get a younger Dman. And this is a slight overpay for Murphy.

Chychrun
I think I'd rather wait and see on Tex and Boqvist. They're both right on the edge of being breakout players and could easily provide more value together than Chychrun considering how inexpensive they are. I do agree that the 2023 1st should be very available for a trade that makes the team better now and in the future. Moves that take advantage of the new Gaudreau window at the cost of the future beyond the 22 draft should absolutely be on the table.

You realize cbj is dumping good players for Pennie’s on the dollar to free up cap space, right? But you expect them to do the same thing for the leafs?
Not sure when leafs fans will finally have a come to Jesus moment about the reality of Muzzin…

The 1 trade of the offseason
Would not trade Johnson 1 for 1 for Miller. Johnson works within the time frame of the team's competition window for the foreseeable future. Having both Gaudreau and Miller puts a time frame of 3-5 years on that window instead. No thank you.

Making sense of the Bjorkstrand trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kjell_Forsman</b></div><div>Weird that Jarmo went from a clear rebuilding team to a win-now team in like 2 weeks. Perhaps ownership forced this just a bit? Need an attendance boost or something. Either way Columbus will be an exciting team to watch.
But the return for Bjorkstrand is mind-bogglingly bad. An excellent 2-way force that’s a near guaranteed 30 goal guy for a 2nd and a 3rd is just horrible asset management.</div></div>
Nobody saw Johnny signing with us. Must have been a contingent. We sign off on this deal. Your in the Playoffs.

Making sense of the Bjorkstrand trade
I can’t make sense of it. He was my favorite player. Ffs. I’d have moved out more than should be rationally allowed.
I hate Gudbranson for no reason. He will always be tainted. He could hoist the mother trucken cup for the and I will only think of the fact it could’ve been bjorky. He costed us bjork. Jarmos dumb choice costed us bjork. I’m bitter and slightly in one atm. Lol. So not the most rational atm.

This makes a Gavrikov extension raise much easier to fit in too. I think Gavy is much more valuable to retain for the team's future than Bjorkstrand as much as I hate losing Bjorky.

I wish more people understood that Flames aren't obligated to take a bad deal because almost every team in the league would move to add a 100 pt player to their roster.
