Not a fan at all.

SJ don't have any cap issue, but Toffoli is already very slow and is now their highest paid forward until he's 36.

Slight overpay but we knew that needed to happen. 32 and still productive, so 4 years isn’t the worst. The $+term really are non factors over the length of the contract. Trade him at 50% retained y3/4

He chose term over playoff games, kind of surprising. thought he would go to a contender. 6mil is a little high, I dont expect this to age well with his below average skating (but great hands).

They DO have a cap issue - they need to hit the floor. Hence the Goodrow waiver claim and this

Damn 4 years is quite a bit of term. Curious if it's frontloaded and the would be an easy buy-out in 2-3 years.

Regardless, we have no one to pay big money in the next 2-3 years other than Zetterlund, Eklund and maybe Thrun. They have a ton of money coming off the books from Vlasic, Couture, Burns retention, Jones buyout, and EK65 retention over the next 3 years as well.

For the production it's not. He put up 30+ goals last year.

This is a really nice AVA on a guy who can net you 30. Look at what Reinhart just got for a guy who nets 30 on average.

The real issue here is the length. They should not have signed him to 4 years.

4 years is a little much, but not a bad deal for both sides

It's a lot of term, in 3 years you'll have new contracts kicking in for Celebrini, Will Smith and co so it might be tight on the fourth one. On the plus side of things he's a perfect teammate to help the young guys around.

Celebrini, Eklund, Smith, Zetterlund. Those are pretty much the only guys that need big raises in the next three years. Maybe add Thrun and Shakir but many of these other guys can go on bridge deals.

Also Vlasics 7 mil is off the books after next year, Burns 2.7 mil is off next year, Coutures 8 mil and EK65s retention is off in Tofolli's last year. Shouldn't be an issue

Toffoli has been one of the biggest bargains in the league, but he didn't seem as effective with NJ and Winnipeg (though he still netted 33 goals), so I'm a little surprised he got this much of a raise as he gets into the age bracket where he'll be expected to decline.

I voted no. Term is too long but the price is expected because SJ needs to overpay to entice FAs. Praying there are no trade protections but I imagine there will be. It will be painful when he's playing like a $4M forward but then again SJ will have the cap space

Feel like it's a bad idea if San Jose wants to tank.

I think this was the last season of the tank, the cupboards are overflowing.

It's a good thing they're not tanking then. It's time to start building back to a competitor. this year will likely still be bottom 5 but still much improved and having very solid top 6 vets like Toffoli to help the young guys develop

Maybe, they'll trade him at the trade deadline, retains 50% of salary and get draft picks for him

Those last years when SJ could be playoff team and maybe even contendor could hurt team when no full NTC.
