Leafs Offseason Pt2

Created by: christianrcleary
Team: 2025-26 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 13, 2024
Published: Jun. 13, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Continuation of my previous offseason, same moves minus a modified Marner trade. Focus for this team is getting more physical with the additions of Bennet, Faksa, and Kulikov. Theodore signing is an assumption that Vegas will not be able to retain him. Jiricek is who I would hope to have drafted at pick 23 in 2024

LA says keep Robertson, Kaliyev is bigger with more expierence and more valuable. Robertson is too small and LA has enough smaller guys.

Toronto insn't getting close to that for Marner.

Marner is going to fetch close to what Ottawa got for DeBrincat last year - a roster player (probably a dump contract), a first round pick and a middling prospect without retention. It's why the 'we're probably going to keep him talk' has surfaced. Toronto has zero leverage in any trade, and Mitch probably declines anyway due to his relationship with Lou.

SJ also isn't taking Reaves for free. Toronto needs to throw a sweetener in (Steeves, Abruzzese).

This is barring a long term extension in Long Island

Marner has a way better resume than Debrincat, consistent 90+ point scorer, hypothetical situation- not taking into account relationship with Lou. Probably right about Reaves

Figured this trade was just a change of scenery trade for both players, talked about it in my previous AGM

He's not much better than a 4th line center at this point, 2.4 for multiple years is not what you want to be paying a 4C

Realll?, looks like you signed 10 UFAs that previously belonged to other teams, and didn't pay anything to get them. Seems very selfish among so many Leafs fans, that because they are going to have a UFA leave, they deserve compensation. These extensions rarely happen as part of any trade.

NJD would be suitor because they lack defensive forwards, Sheldon Keefe also loves the guy

Not really. DeBrincat's younger, scores more (two 40 goal seasons + a season prorated at 52 goals) and had a more reasonable contract with RFA status at the end of it.
Marner's cap hit alone is going to drive down the price. So is his NMC as well as the lingering question of who actually drove the play with Matthews. Did he get all of those assists (and 90 point seasons), because he was Matthews winger?

I see the point but these are two very different players. This trade would be a sign and trade to NYI so they would have him long term. When Marner was on Tavares' wing he had 68 assists and 94 points so it's not entirely because of Matthews

So if you want to look at the Tavares' years, you can say that Marner helped get John +10 more goals than he usually did finishing the season with 47 goals instead 38/37. So putting him beside an elite center would garner 10 to 15 more goals so you may make Horvat a 40 goal scorer. MAYBE. Horvat isn't as talented as Tavares was in his prime IMO.

I also don't see the Isles doing a sign and trade. They aren't going to pay a player more than what Barzal makes, who could be considered a better version than Marner (once again, put Barzal on Matthew's wing and how many points does Matthew's get).

I do think that Barzal is a very good player but Barzal has had 1 season above a point per game and that was back in 2017-18. Marner hasn't finished below a ppg since then. So I do think that Marner is much better than Barzal

Is that because he has been playing beside Matthews? Who has Barzal's wingers been/centers been? Who has been finishing for Barzal? Looking just at points isn't that helpful.
Barzal is also much better in the playoffs, another thing that tanks Marner's value.

He's been playing wing for either Horvat or Nelson lately so his linemates aren't that bad

Avs pass. At that point they should have at the minimum MacKinnon, Mittelstadt & Colton as their top 3 centres so not sure where you get the lack of C depth from. Add to that Ritchie likely coming through and possibly Pavel and/or Foudy already vying for the 4C spot and there's no need for the Avs to do it.

If COL wanted Blueger why wouldn’t they just sign him? Just dumb.
