No shot I consider this if I’m Grier. Respectfully.

Zetterlund looks like he’s going to have a long and great NHL career - and he’ll never cost as much as Marner, and Ferraro is the teams next C; plus San Jose needs to select an elite D prospects to with the Pens pick (or a trade up to get one).

SJ would decline. If you take out the 1st and and Zetterlund, they may let Ferraro go for it.

13 overall for what is essentially a rental? Not like he'd be dealt at the TDL (nor would he want to go to SJS to miss the playoffs).

Why wouldn't Marner sign an extension? San Jose has cap space and he can play with Celebrini.

If the trade involved an extension for Marner at reasonable pricepoint, then I guess they'd consider, but let's face it that guy is already overpaid for whatever he brings, which thus far seems to be only regular season points.

Without extension, no, I don't think they will.

I wouldn't even trade zetterlund for Marner rn, the sharks had to deal with 20 years of elite hockey players who could not perform in the playoffs to the standard needed. the last thing we need is another expensive player like that.

Not to pile on, but Marner wouldn't even be able to sign an 8-year-deal until the TDL 2025. So if the Sharks acquired him it would have to be as a pure rental.

I feel like Rielly-for-Ferarro swap could work out well for both teams.

Because competiting in a few years is a hard sell?

Very few contenders have the cap space to accommodate his $12 million per year ask, so he's going have to either compromise on his salary or play with a rebuilding team for a few years. The Sharks, Ducks and Blackhawks make the most sense for him imo.

I think he's going to find a way to get paid on a contender, or he'll take a pay cut to compete.
When you're getting paid we'll anyways, a few million off for more attempts at the cup doesn't hurt.

SJ now has a ton of great forward prospects but the quality of NHL talent that they have now probably means that it would be closer to a decade until they compete.

Would Sharks actually do this? Would love this as a Leafs fan.
