Trying to be like the Dallas Stars
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mikael_Smith</b></div><div>Stolarz? As a 1B have Woll as a starter</div></div>
I mean, Stolarz has never played more than 30 games in a season. His results this season were good, but how much of that could be attributable to being behind a very strong defensive team? He could be better, but I don't think it's definitive. Despite his play, I would honestly be find going into next season with Samsonov at a reasonable cap hit (that could easily be buried). There just aren't too many enticing options out there, and at least Sammy is familiar with the goalie coach, the expectations of playing in a big market, and the team and how they play. Stolarz would not.

That only seems to be the case when a player plays for Toronto though, haha. In all seriousness, MLSE is known for paying majority of their contracts in signing bonuses, which is a MASSIVE incentive. There's a lot that goes into it, but I'm sure a lot of people would rather have one large payment of 50 million dollars now than 6 payments of 10 million dollars over 6 years.

Marner to Utah
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hammerwise</b></div><div>Maybe its a stretch but Macelli at 23 yrs old has 106 pts in 146 games last 2 yrs on a bad team, with bad offense, so just a 50 pt winger is a bit of a put down, and Ingram is a 1B goalie and a 2nd seems a bit much, and certainly a one dimensional play making winger probably looking at a 13+mil re-sign is a not an easy pill to swallow for most clubs without them throwing in a cap dump/expensive player.
It does hurt Marner's value to be an expiring UFA especially at that cap hit, in addition to the general leaf fan consensus that other than pts marner delivers nothing else.</div></div>
Marner was a Selke finalist about two years ago and is arguably still our best defensive forward at 5v5 and an integral part of our penalty kill. He's far from "one-dimensional."

Marner to Utah
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hammerwise</b></div><div>Do you really think Marner as a 11mil expiring UFA (following a weak season and a horrible playoffs) gets you that return?
Ingram sure, but Macelli after his prior two seasons and believing him to be a cheaper ppg player and a 2nd too?
All these leaf proposals are looking to trade marner, but few teams are going to give up equal or good value for an expiring 11mil player who is being run out of Toronto and coming off one of his worst seasons.</div></div>
This is some next-level brainwashing. We're in a world where people actually think Marner can't return a 50-point winger and a 1B goalie, simply because he's on a 1-year deal, lol.

Marner Trade

Leaf fans (and most fans in general) don't know how to evaluate a player's true individual impact. If something goes wrong, he's the scapegoat, which I understand is what happens when you demand that much money—you have to take on responsibility. But that doesn't mean he's actually at fault for every error that occurs on the ice.
If Marner were actually traded, it would be for a king's ransom. He's scored at a 100-point pace for the past 4 seasons. Even if his playoff performance hasn't been up to par, there are still teams that continue to struggle to even make the playoffs.

The past seven years have completely warped the expectations of the Leafs players and their fans. It all started by signing Tavares when it was completely unnecessary. We set completely absurd "win-now" expectations and traded first-round picks EVERY season. Imagine we just kept Kadri as our second centre and stopped trading our first-round pick every single season. We would've been in a much better spot by now. What I'm saying is that, unfortunately, that's what we have to do NOW. The past 7 years that we have endured are a result of what happens when a team is IMPATIENT.

Toronto actually sends their 2026 pick. And contract status is irrelevant if you’re an RFA. In fact, it can be more desirable for a team because they can choose how much they want to pay the player they want to acquire (assuming no arb), rather than acquiring a player and possibly needing a 3rd-party team retain. Regardless, kind of a bizarre thing to fixate on out of this entire post lol.

Yes, because they're both upgrades over Liljegren, which would prevent us from signing Liljegren, thus the reason for making this trade... sorry if that isn't clear.

Two Leafs One Sword
Only thing about this trade is that we already have Minten and Holmberg who, although not as good (yet), could serve the same role as Roy would, while at a much lower cap hit. The progress Holmberg has made this season has given me hope that he can be a full-time reliable, all-situations 3C for us next year. I mean, he’s pretty much already playing that role for us in right now, and he certainly hasn’t looked out of place.

playoff lines
That third line just cannot be trusted to play in their own end. Bertuzzi-Matthews-Domi has looked very good. Putting Nylander on a third line with Holmberg and Knies/McMann could be almost as good offensively as the third line you proposed while still being solid defensively. Then you'd have McMann/Knies-Tavares-Marner. I think you have 3 lines that can defend any line and score against any line. I like that.
We have the personnel to have a 4th line that can shut down top competition and take important defensive zone starts: Dewar-Kampf-Jarnkrok. You don't need JT in a shutdown role, nor should he be.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Texas416_er</b></div><div>Is Lily's buddy also an RFA who seems allergic to consistency? I would rather trade him in the off season than sign him for more. He will be on the 2nd pair if they only sign one major right shot D man like Roy or Pesce or DeMelo (or even Walker), and 3rd pair if they were to sign two of the three.
Again, McMann was a UFA and Dewar is an RFA</div></div>
AAV goes up along with contract length (for RFAs). Hard to estimate how much an RFA like Lilly would make. Don't see any reason why this isn't a reasonable price, though. It makes the most sense for the team. If he doesn't want to sign it, then we'll just trade him. But it's certainly not completely off from reality. Lilly has struggled to hold a spot in the top-4 pretty much up until this season, and the only reason he probably hasn't lost that spot is due to injuries and this blueline being weak as hell. Wouldn't be surprised to see him on the 3rd pair (again) come playoff time.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChrisG</b></div><div>dog respectfully you have pontus holmberg as your 3rd line centre, jarnkrok in that position is way better, despite it not being for a while. but if that's egregious then use the money from samsonov to get a 3C in FA, maybe Henrique?
whats wrong with domi? putting the last name aside, hes been great in the absence of mitch, and feistier than bert and mccabe. hes fast and while awful defensively, great at generating chances. also yea i would agree that Andersson doenst have to be the guy. i like Pesce and Roy filling that spot</div></div>
One of Holmberg, Minten, Kampf or Dewar being 3C is more likely. We've pretty much had a 3C of that quality for the past 5 years outside of ROR. I honestly really like Holmberg. He's improved a lot throughout this season and has the potential to grow next season. That can be a good line if you can put him on a line with someone like Nyalnder and Knies/Mcmann. If you think it needs an upgrade, then you trade your 1st at the deadline for a 2/3C. But throughout the regular season, it's fine.
I love Domi and the season he's having. But I honestly just wouldn't be confident in giving him 4.5-5 million over the next 5 seasons. He's just too one-dimensional of a player. He's incredible at generating offence off the rush and can make some really nice passes. But for a player making that kind of money, I'd want more. I'd rather give that money to Bertuzzi. His finishing has been very unlucky this season, but his style of hockey is more important to this team based on what we have on the rest of our roster. And his contract will be only marginally more expensive (if at all) than Domi's.

You don't even have a 3rd line centre. Jarnkrok hasn't played that position in years.
Don't sign Domi, and don't trade Lilly or our first. There are a plethora of RHD available in FA that would be excellent additions to the blueline without having to sacrifice any of our future or current assets for a marginal upgrade.

Agree with everything g except for the Brodie scratch. Realistically, he’s in that spot over Benoit (not a bad thing). Truly, Benoit should be considered over Edmundson. They have similar skillet/role, except Benoit had been much better this season and had actually earned it. Just think having Benoit and Edmundson is a bit redundant in the lineup.
