Why I like these moves

Created by: Robl88
Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 5, 2024
Published: May 5, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I like this approach because we essentially get deeper everywhere. We can restock our cupboards with some top prospects while simultaneously beefing up our NHL depth. It's easy to roll this team into next year, as losing Smith isn't a big deal, and he didnt cost us much. We'll either be able to sign another veteran replacement or one of our prospects will push for the job.

That D group is better than what we've had here in a long time and with another top D being drafted, could eventually become unbelievably deep...and BIG.

Leafs also fire Keefe and hire Berube. Time to play playoff hockey all year long.

And serious changes to the PP need to happen as well. It disappears in the post season.

Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Buchnevich, Pavel
Additional Details:
Buch obviously doesnt replace Marner's production, but he has size, a better shot, and wont shy away from the net.
STL
  1. Järnkrok, Calle
  2. Niemelä, Topi
  3. 2024 1st round pick (TOR)
2.
TOR
    Wherever/whatever
    CHI
    1. Kämpf, David
    2. Timmins, Conor
    Additional Details:
Holmberg is better than Kampf, and we need all the space we can get. Timmins just needs another opportunity.
    3.
    TOR
    1. Nyman, Jani
    2. Oleksiak, Jamie
    3. 2024 1st round pick (SEA)
    Additional Details:
Leafs get a top dman from this draft, a 6'4" winger with fantastic production last year in Liiga, and a top 4 dman.
    SEA
    1. Marner, Mitchell
    Additional Details:
Will be Seattle's most talented player and will help them push for a playoff spot next season.
    4.
    TOR
    1. Smith, Reilly ($500,000 retained)
    Additional Details:
Pens want to move the player and his cap hit. Leafs could use some veteran help, and Dubas is both familiar with and likes Abruzzese.
    5.
    TOR
    1. 2024 1st round pick (NYI)
    Additional Details:
18th most likely doesn't help the Islanders anytime soon, and they are quickly slipping from playoff contention. this trade gives them some much needed youth. Both players produced within sheltered roles. They likely win this trade, Leafs would really have to nail the pick.

Fair value for the islanders but no use for Liljegren sadly.

No 5th NHL centre on the roster, no 7th NHL Dman on the roster isn't a good plan at all. Can find better value than Smith at 4,5m. Cowan can't be considered a Leafs in October.

A 21 man roster isn’t a big deal at all. If we can get better value than Smith that works too. Just ideally want a veteran winger on 1 year that can still play. Also can’t think of any reason why Cowan can’t make the team.

Of course, no one knows for sure. If he’s going to waive anywhere though, I think this is as likely of a spot as any, that would actually have interest in him as well.

Giving up a 1st for Robertson and Lilljegren doesn't make sense for the Islanders. Lilly doesn't fit a need - their RHD depth chart right now is Dobson-Pulock-Mayfield, and even if you think he's better than Mayfield currently is, well, that guy's got 6x$3.5M left on his deal and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Robertson is a 5'9" winger with a long injury history who barely saw the ice in the playoffs. Neither of these guys fills a roster hole that would justify giving up the team's first 1st round pick they've held on to (so far) since 2019.
