I don't mind this fit for NJD. Matheson has 2 years left on his deal, which is a good amount of time to mentor and bridge Luke Hughes into the top pair D that they want him to become, and if he gets there sooner they can flip Matheson to a team who wants him. I also am interested in the Habs acquiring Marino as part of the return so that Nemec can get that 2nd pair spot that he should probably earn sooner than later, and MTL gets their 2RD of the future (unless Mailloux or Barron become good)

We give up the younger player with a cheaper contract with more term at the more valuable position that fits our needs better.

You know you aren’t building even a remotely realistic offer when it takes 7 pieces to acquire 1. Elite players require an elite return. Wipe the slate clean and try again (better yet though, don’t, because Zegras isn’t available and MTL fans have absolutely exhausted this wet dream of theirs on this platform for the past 4 months)
