Notes from El-Bashir as free agency looms:
- Expect the Caps to be frugal, unless a cap dump is made which seems unlikely.
- MacLellan has been displeased with the Wilson trade rumors. Has not had a single conversation about dealing 43. Also on Wilson, Washington has had “good” discussions according to his agent but a deal announced this weekend is not likely.
- Caps do not intend to re-sign Conor Sheary, Matt Irwin, and Craig Smith. Connor Brown plans on going to market, Caps are still interested and Brown may circle back but intends on getting other offers.
- Martin Fehervary and Riley Sutter have already received qualifying offers, and Caps are already in discussion with Fehervary on an extension.
- Caps are still deciding on RFAs Kody Clark, Gabe Carlsson, and Henrik Borgstrom. Borgstrom has signed in Sweden but his contract has a clause that allows him to return to the NHL if he chooses.
- Caps would like to make a splash in a trade but big salaries are a roadblock. (My guess, potentially a DeBrincat trade was considered?)
- MacLellan attempted to trade up, but he said “everybody wanted to stand pat”. Also regarding the draft, the Caps had a first round grade on Andrew Cristall.
- Carbery and MacLellan continue to work on filling out the coaching staff. Mitch Love will work on team defense, and interviews for a PP coach are expected to intensify in the coming days.
- Hunter Shepard is expected to sign a 2 year extension, while Zach Fucale is expected to head to the KHL, meaning Hershey’s goalie tandem next year will be Shepard and Clay Stevenson.
