Yes, but TOR would have to take back Nyquist and Voracek too.

2 quality, potentially cornerstone pieces (5th & 6th overall) plus another 1st and 2nd seems pretty fair

Nyquist would be a UFA and they'd have to pay more if they want the Leafs to also take Voracek

It does not. You would need a generational talent coming back or it's not worth it. Matthews is the 2nd best player in the world. This is a big downgrade.

If Matthews says he is going to hit free agency next offseason, what generational talent are we getting back?

That’s *might* get you Matthew’s stick, and maybe his jockstrap.

Johnson and Jiricek are insanely talented prospects, don’t get me wrong, but Matthews is the second best player in the world and capable of 60 goals every year.

It’d cost more.

If matthews says he's gonna hit free agency next year why would anyone trade for him?

No thanks from Columbus. Underpay for one thing for Matthews, and it's not worth trying to figure out how to make the cap work. It would raise the cost exponentially to move out enough money to fit him in. Keep him.

Read the trade, same reason Tkachuk got traded but signed in FLA... weird how that can happen

Absolutely crazy that you wouldn't do this, would only need to move 1 year of Voracek

Tkachuk did that because he could get 8 years and play in Florida, why would matthews take 4 years? Why would Columbus only want him for 4 years?
And either way that still doesnt get matthews. Anothet team would easily beat that

Why do you think Matthews would sign in Columbus, but not extend in Toronto ? That’s really random

Almost like this is a fake site with made up trades? Why did Gaudreau sign in Columbus? I'm not sure, not best friends with the guy

Shorter term deals for superstars are coming to maximize earned dollars just like other sports, you're asking questions that don't really matter on a site where you literally make trades up

Well even if were making things up, the entire point here is discussing those things. And if tkachuk and huberdeau etc signed long term deals, why is matthews taking a short one? His next contract will start right before he turns 27 and 4 years brings him well out of prime and deflates any contract after, if he wants to maximize he's gonna take as much term as he can get. Short term contract maximizes a 2nd deal because of the ages it covers.

That’s not getting Matthews, also Columbus can’t afford that. The only way anyone is getting Matthews is as a UFA, or if he demands a trade out of Toronto, neither of which are very likely.

I'm telling you the cost is more than Columbus can afford, the end.

He isn't going to say that. He's going to get more money in TO than anywhere else. Even with taxes, he gets all his money in bonus money and more endorsement money than anywhere else.
