(MTL/WPG) - Monahan for 2024 1st (WPG), 2027 3rd (WPG)
Like every other trade around deadline day, it's a wait-and-see. Monahan is on pace for roughly 60 points and 20 goals which isn't cheap in the trade market. If the Jets go on a run then this is an absolute win, and if they fall on their faces then it's a bad trade.
It's a fair deal in my opinion (maybe slightly more on the Montreal side) but I don't think this is a blatant overpay.
Also, never forget that Montreal got two firsts for Monahan. One for taking him, and one for trading him away.

Is Willie worth this kind of money? Yes absolutely.
Should the Leafs have signed him to this deal? Maybe? Next year will be tough for sure, having 4 players make over 10+. When the Tavares contract is up though, maybe it won't be so bad.

Look. I'm an avid Oiler fan and will bleed blue and orange. I drive 13 hours to go watch them play and suffered through the decade of darkness.
All this saying, this is not even at all. You're asking for the number 5 center in the world for the number 1 defenceman in the world. Closer would be Makar for McDavid.

I don't hate the trade at all. The only thing I'd personally change is to sign a more experienced 6th RHD. I could see that 3rd pairing getting eaten alive.

You say that, but this is the GM that signed Deangelo when they already have 2 overpaid RHD who can't play defense, couldn't sign Gaudreau when he wanted to play there, traded Atkinson for Voracek, etc. just to name a few. Not saying this is a good trade but let's remember who the GM is.

Hellebuyck Trade
Just focusing in on the trade here, I honestly think Edmonton would need to add more. After watching the Jet's powerplay I think Barrie would be good for them and all but I think you'd need to switch out Lavoie for either: Holloway, Bourgault or Broberg for the Jets to take it. Foegele I think is a non-factor and doesn't really take away or add much in terms of value to this trade IMO

Before we get to hasty here let's remember who the GM of the Blackhawks are here :p. This is the same man that signed Seth Jones to a 8 year for 9.5 a year then decides he wants to trade him after 1 year.

I'm not disagreeing with you at all, just genuinely curious as to why he has more value? Nechas was on pace for 42 points in 82 games this year and Poolparty was on pace for 45. They have a 1 year age difference. The only difference I see is one is a center and one is a wing (which yes means they are worth a little more) but do you really think Nechas has that much more value?
I've seen this trade a lot and I'm just curious.

I don't watch a lot of Philly games (only when they play the Oilers). Just purely looking at his numbers from the last two years, is Carter Hart not playing up to his potential or is Philly just that bad in front of him? I understand why he asked this, even though if you asked me I'd take Hart over Skinner all day.

First of all the remaining cap space. Nice.
I don't hate the trade for Kapanen and think he'd be a nice addition to the team. That fourth line is scary bad though. I'd hope that Holloway, Lavoie, etc. get some time to play this season instead of those old guys. Also, why the hate on Skinner being the backup?
Finally, do you think Macleod will really cost that much? He's only got 22 points in 81 games in the NHL so I think the bridge deal might be a bit cheaper.
Overall though I like the moves here and wouldn't hate seeing this team (minus that 4th line) on the ice next year.

Yeah as an Oiler fan I can tell you that Dach trade isn't even at all. I think everyone knows Kassian is a cap dump right now and Poolparty is still unproven. Dach is only 21 and has a lot of potential. I would imagine a closer trade would be Dach for Broberg?

Not to say that PLD isn't a good player and you obviously don't want to force Shane Wright into the top 6 right away but with Suzuki and Wright being with the team for a long time do the Habs need him? I wonder if they'd want to look to find a #2-3 C on a shorter 2-3 year contract to help shelter Wright until he's ready for top 6 minutes? Could they get that person in free agency without selling the farm?

Hurry Up Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Quillanrocks</b></div><div>Seattle is not trading a pick for Tyson Barrie . . . none from this year's draft, anyway. I don't think Barrie would be of 2nd Round pick value to Seattle, either. (Curious what his value would be across the league knowing "what" he is and "what" Edmonton is up against.)
Anyhow, I'd wager that draft picks are more important to the Kraken franchise than any other in the league, currently. Plus, UFA period comes AFTER the draft. Kraken will take a stab at Klingberg, perhaps others, before even considering a trade for Tyson Barrie.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JBrger18</b></div><div>I appreciate your kind and thorough response. I can see where you are coming from with the priority in picks and I can completely agree. I think Barrie could warrant a 2nd round pick elsewhere like PIT if Letang doesn't sign back. The only reason I picked a second from this years draft was that the draft class doesn't seem as deep compared to next years, so I was valuing it less than the 2023 pick. Although if EDM can't sign back Kulak for like $2.5M I would like to see them looking for a Barrie for Soucy trade or something.</div></div>
Can I just say how much I appreciate you two. I'm sick of seeing trades and comments are like " this is dumb" "X team would never do this" and that's it. It's nice to see not everyone is grumpy on this site.

I don't think you are necessarily wrong but you forget how badly the Sharks don't want Kane to come back either. I'm not an expert on SJ at all but just looking at their cap situation, if they have to take on Kanes 7 million a year I think they will need to get rid of him this summer to make it work.
I also don't know how many other teams really want Kane so their options to get rid of him might be limited. As far as I've read (so obviously there could be more) the only other team interested in Kane at the time was Washington so the trade market for him might be limited.

Nice.</div></div>
All I was saying was that Smith is not a better goalie because he isn't healthy enough to play anymore. Georgiev played more games as a back-up than Smith did as a starter this year. I would rather have a goalie who might not be as good in the net play a full season rather than Smith getting injured game 5 and Skinner is forced to be an NHL Starter.

As an Oiler fan I can tell you this is a lie. If Mike Smith was 100% healthy then sure he's probably still slightly better but the reality is he's not anymore. Even if Smith comes back next year the chances of him staying health for over 60% of the season will be a miracle.
I don't know enough about Georgiev and how good he is etc. to say if he's the solution, but the Oilers will probably need a more reliable option to share the net with Skinner.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>Smith isn't getting bought out weeks after taking the Oilers to the Conference Finals for the first time in 16 years. That's really dumb.
And the Kraken trade is a loss for Edmonton, they aren't doing that. Keith has more value than Soucy and Barrie has more than Driedger, so Edmonton isn't adding a 1st.</div></div>
I disagree . The first overall might be a bit of an overpayment (depending on how a team values Barrie) but Smith is not a starting goalie because he can't stay healthy long enough. Driedger is a goalie who could have a bounce back and I'd feel better with Driedger/Skinner over Smith/Skinner. Plus if you think of this trade as a way to keep Kane, Poolparty and Yammo then it makes a ton of sense.
My only gripe with this Armchair GM is I'd like to see Kassian traded as a cap dump, not bought out but I don't know the market for him right now.
Overall though I really like this from an Oiler perspective

As much as I loved how Kane played, I would be shocked if he signed for this little of an amount. He has to make a lot of money in a short amount of time so I'd imagine he'll be chasing bags this summer. Unfortunately I don't think Edmonton is that place

Cursed Penguins team
I don't hate the player but I do think it's a bit of an overpayment for someone who hasn't played 50% of a season and only has a high of 18 points in the last 3 seasons. The other thing too is the Oilers are so strapped for cash this offseason that I can imagine they'd only move Kassian for cap relief not for 2.3 million more than Kass. If the retained some salary for Zucker then sure I think this is fair as Zucker does have 1 less year.
