San Jose, LAK with a healthy Jonathan Quick (I hope you don't seriously think LA are bad just because of last year, with Peter Budaj as their #1 G fo 3/4 of the season)</div></div>

Peter Budaj was outstanding for the Kings when he played...nobody is taking that into account. San Jose lost the production of Marleau, and they're counting on Meier/Hertl/Labanc/Boedker to make up for those goals. Not to mention the odds of Burns replicating his performance from last season is highly unlikely. Calgary bolstered a defense that was already a top 5 defense core in the league, and now it's probably top 3. They'll have much more stability with Smith as their goalie, and some of their young forwards are only going to take steps forward. Calgary is in the playoffs for sure</div></div>

the question was which team has <strong>a chance</strong> to finish ahead of Calgary in the standings besides EDM and ANA, I agree that CGY defense can be considered one of the best, but I'm not convinced with M.Smith in net, people said the same when they got Elliot, and that didn't turn out like everyone wanted. So that's why I put LAK and SJ on par with the Flames.

And you have to agree that regardless of how Budaj played, Quick is an improvment. Budaj did play well though, even if he played 60 games (which is fitting of a starting goaltender), he was still only putting up numbers fit for a backup goalie, win % of 50, which is what you expect of a good backup, and his save % was tied for 20th in the league. You could make an argument that his GAA was top 5, but that's more indicative of how good LAK defense is, because if you look at goalies with 60 games + played, he faced at least 300 shots less than everyone else.

Well sure, Anaheim probably has the forwards, defence, and goaltending ... <strong>but LA has shown us that they know how to work together</strong>, like they did in 2012, which is the most important thing in hockey.</div></div>

What does that mean even mean?

Hockey is a team sport.....</div></div>

yeah, but they've done that more than the Ducks ... sure, they don't have the guys they did when they won cups, but i wouldn't be surprised if Gaborik played better, and also Gabe Vilardi might play right away (i thought he would as i thought he would go 3rd, or maybe 4th/5th/6th, great pick by the Kings), and then Kopitar, Carter, Toffoli, Pearson, Dowd, and then Kempe might get a point per 2 games season, or at least close, and then they have Cammaleri now too ... on D Ladue might take the next step ... they also have Muzzin, Martinez, Forbort, oh, and the best D-man in the league if you ask me (even if he's not he's top 3). Sure, Quick's had injuries, but if he's not injured, then i think they make the playoffs. And they have Gravel/Folin to be their 6th guy on D ... also they might not be done in FA ... sure, their prospect group isn't great, but we're talking about 2017-18, this year that's about to be played ...
Also, LAK seems to make the playoffs every 2nd year, and they missed this year, so i think they make it. And no, this is not my only reason for thinking they make it.

So the Islanders, Kings, and Coyotes have a better chance than Dallas, Montreal, Anaheim, Winnipeg, CHICAGO, and Boston? C'mon man...

First off, Dallas is massively improved from last year. They are stacked up front with Benn, Seguin, Radulov, Spezza, Hanzal, Faksa, etc. They've added Bishop to cover for their biggest weakness, and added Methot to solidy their D core. They are more than likely a playoff team (not to mention that you only have 2 Central teams with a greater than 50% chance of making the playoffs. EDIT: Whoops, missed MIN, so 3 teams, my fault.

Chicago is leveling out, but they still have more than enough talent to make the playoffs. Toews, Kane, Anisimov, Sadd, Panik, Keith, Seabrook, and Crawford.

Montreal has Carey Price and plays in a weak division. They'll make the playoffs. TB is the only team I can guarantee from the Atlantic that should finish higher than them.

Anaheim has one of the best defensive cores in the league, a great young goalie in Gibson, and a pretty solid forward group.

Winnipeg may have the best top 6 in the league, or at least up there. Schiefle, Laine, Wheeler, Little, Perrault, and Ehlers. They've also addressed their main weakness with signing Mason.

How are the Kings, Islanders, or Coyotes higher than any of those teams?</div></div>

1) Dallas' forwards are the big problem ... sure they have a good top 6 but what about their bottom 6?

2) Chicago lost Hossa, TVR, Hjalmarsson (though they got Murphy), Panarin, etc.

3) The goalie doesn't change EVERYTHING. Price is no Bobrovsky if you ask me anyway.

4) Fair enough ... the league is getting faster and the Pacific is getting better, so Anaheim's game won't work if you ask me, but fair enough ...

5) Winnipeg's D is the problem ...

6) LAK seems to make it every 2nd year ... and they just need another forward ... i think they should go after Kyle Palmieri. Also, they have the best D-Man in the league.

7) Doug Weight made the Isles better, and as much as they lost Hamonic, they added Eberle and should have Barzal in the lineup.

8) Look at all the Coyotes' young players.
