I’d move 10 pick for any of those guys. But good young dmen are hard to come by.
It would probably be a winger…or deep-in-the-red but low candidate

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dgibb10</b></div><div>I’d agree with that. The sens best shot of winning a title is with Brady and building around him. He should only be moved if he demands out. If he demands out, the return will be disappointing as it always is.
Zegras would make more sense for Ottawa because of his upside, whereas my perspective comes from winning now, and the preference of Mercer defensively and his cap hit shorter term.
Whereas Ottawa, if they moved Tkachuk, would be needing a 2nd star forward.</div></div>
there’s also the issue of being worse short term which means a forfeited lottery pick in 2026. 😅

I can, but first off…your offer isn’t close! Johansson is completely washed up and O’rourke might never play with n the NHL!
I see Chesley developing into a league-average to very good 2nd pairing RHD. He’s a very good skater, has a very heavy shot, moves the puck fairly well, has piss and vinegar in his game, is as strong as an ox, and probably has more offensive upside than most people think. He would be the perfect #2 to Faber’s #1. Those two manning the right side of the blueline for the next decade+ would be terrific!

Very good skater, versatile, very calm, cool under pressure,...
Probably a little like Brock Faber or Jake Sanderson mold or a player.
For comp from the Devils, maybe Damon Severson with lesser shot, fewer mistakes, a little more mobile.
Defends well with his skating. Can interrupt transition. Deny entry into d-zone.
Offense/points will come as he handles puck well, but probably no more than 25-30/year at peak
MINN Golden Gophers are one of the best at developing dmen too...maybe top-5 along in that regard.
So he should arrive well trained and NHL-ready.

I would love to see an updated article; that was from 2014 I believe. Someone like Fleury might skew the older goalie trend like Brodeur & Hasek did in this one. But looking at Kuemper, Mike Smith, Holtby, etc... that cliff they talk about is real!

That NJD trade is revolting. The devils have no use for Mike Matheson or any defenseman that requires time on the power play to be effective. They already have 3 defensemen that are capable of playing on the power play. Christian Dvorak at this point is a cap dump.
What you basically offered was for New Jersey to move back in the draft and give up Alexander Holtz for cap dump and a player they won’t be able to utilize properly. No thank you.

Upgrades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dgibb10</b></div><div>Alex Holtz has flaws. His defensive game still needs some polish, and he really needs to be more careful with the puck, as there are some bad turnovers at times.
He is never going to be a play driving guy.
But he is fantastic at getting open for shots in the ozone, and he is an incredible shooter.
The offensive tools are already there to be a 35 goal scorer literally next year if you stick him into a role in the top 6 and PP1.
Now, whether his defensive and puck position game will follow to an acceptable level is the question that determines whether he’s Mike Hoffman or Tyler Toffoli</div></div>
The open challenge is Boston is a team that depends on forechecking and defensively responsible forwards. They have a player with a similar profile in Lysell and Lysell showed he’s willing to play a team game. My assumption is Holtz will have more potential than a late 1st. Just wondering if he makes sense. Personally think he’s worth a flyer, but I do acknowledge the flaws and talent are both present
I don’t see why Vegas trades Karlsson and why Boston isn’t just signing Lindholm OR Stephenson. At the beginning of the year, all I heard from most fans was praying that Lindholm would make it to free agency.

You're right, goalies do age differently. The decline in the mid 30s is incredibly common. And the fall off in the mid 30s is usually abrupt, sudden, and large.
<a href="https://hockey-graphs.com/2014/03/21/how-well-do-goalies-age-a-look-at-a-goalie-aging-curve/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Goalie aging curve</a></div></div>
If it's Ullmark, then absolutely. He is a way better option!
As for the article, it was a great read. Thank you for the information. It is a little misleading as some of the commenter's point out. But the premise that most goalies decline over 35 is true; except for your elite ones, and that isn't Markstrom

This is not really correct either, according to recent research.
23-25 is the AVERAGE prime. Meaning there will be many cases of NHLers peaking in their careers before the age of 23 - about just as many whom peaks after the age of 25.

To my knowledge, this is actually wrong.
The most recent research on the topic that I'm familiar with sets the average prime years to between 23-25.
It's a young man's sport.

I also think they'd be stupid to let Byfield go unsigned that long anyway. You get Byfield done asap, and then figure out what you have to spend around him based off that.</div></div>
Agreed I'd be PISSED too. Still with how good Byfield is, if LA isn't willing to give him a long term contract and not give him more than 7 I think every GM outside of <em>maybe</em> 3/5 teams should offersheet him

It really depends on how thrun is viewed and if Shakir is ready. I'm assuming vlasic is basically a LTIR at this point.</div></div>
Thrun is probably a full time NHLer at this point, a bottom 4 kind of guy. Shakir spent most of last year in the AHL, but I would be surprised if he wasn't a full time NHLer next year. Add Ferarro and some combination of Vlasic/Rutta/Burroughs, the Sharks are pretty full on LD at the moment.
They would definitely be open to moving Sturm, but at this point they are going to want to get back a top 4 LD prospect or a middle 6 winger. They aren't going to be very interestiedin moving their 2024 1st/2nd rounders, either.

I think this is an obvious deal and everybody is trying to over complicate it, because they are bored with the same discussion over and over.
A 2024 third and a 2025 top 12 protected first or Holtz.
Some team may come in and make a better offer. Maybe NJ prefers the older Markstrom.
Unless NJD makes the decision they don’t want to lock into Mercer long term after last year (which I assume they won’t, but the regression was steep), I think the deal parameters are pretty clear between the two teams.

offseason
For the 1000 time,
1. Ullmark isn’t worth a top 10 pick
2. Bahl is going to be worth more to NJ than Boston because of the presence of Peeke on the 3rd line (they play a similar role)
And for the responses to this thread
3. Jeremy Swayman is not available. If you think they are trading him after this playoff, lay off the booze for a few weeks to prevent permanent brain damage
4. I don’t care what Vancouver did with their cap problems back in the day
On a side note, that game was fun to watch last night. Now it’s time to get ready for a counter punch from a very good team. While I think the media has made Florida out to be the boogeyman and they are not, I acknowledge the talent level and appreciate it. Boston can win this series, but they need to keep it mucked up.

If NJD wins 2nd overall pick
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Celtics21</b></div><div>So basically you hopefully pulled something out of your backside, came up with percentages with limited logic behind it, and are hoping it to be true even though the GM of the Bruins shut down discussions immediately
I can pretty much guarantee if Swayman is traded, it is NOT going to be for someone like Mercer. It will be in a package for someone like Draisaitl or Hirschier.
With Mercer’s pending RFA contract, I don’t feel like Ullmark for him is all that much of a stretch personally. His primary value is maybe in a bridge contract especially if you don’t believe he can play center.
Maybe toss in a future 2nd and a secondary prospect like Merkulov along with Ullmark,</div></div>
80% of players who go through Arb hearings are gone in two years. Most fans of those teams say the same thing, “our guy is different”…”our GM will never let him go”…yet it happens all the time. Also, at goalie position specifically, RFAs are more likely moved than signed guys. They were over $2m apart on a one-year deal last time. That’s not very close. And haven’t gotten very far on long-term deal. So a little early to make any sort of guarantees.
