Description

I'm not sure this would work as well, considering Dallas is fortunate enough to have drafted an elite #1 in Heiskenen. Having said that, the Leafs scouting staff is clearly very good at finding and developing talent beyond the first 20 picks of the draft—players like Knies, Robertson, Sandin, Holmberg, and soon-to-be Cowan (and Minten?) have all made a notable impact in their stints this season. Dallas was able to draft players like Harley, Johnston, and Stankoven, all while they were still a playoff team. I think the Leafs should go a similar route, and I hope these players can contribute within the next 2-3 years and extend our cores window, which seems to be closing, and alleviate some of the overwhelming organizational pressure.

If they trade those two it should be for roster players, not draft picks.

I mean, Stolarz has never played more than 30 games in a season. His results this season were good, but how much of that could be attributable to being behind a very strong defensive team? He could be better, but I don't think it's definitive. Despite his play, I would honestly be find going into next season with Samsonov at a reasonable cap hit (that could easily be buried). There just aren't too many enticing options out there, and at least Sammy is familiar with the goalie coach, the expectations of playing in a big market, and the team and how they play. Stolarz would not.
