Complete rebuild of roster
What a mess. Bozak, de Haan, Neal and Johnson will for sure get more than that on the UFA market. Danault will get twice that, de la Rose will get closer to $1M. And why sign those 4th liners only to force our young players out of the lineup? Where's Hudon?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rangersandislesfan</b></div><div>10.25M, even in the NHL, is a lot of money. De-Haan i put on a 1 year deal just to see how he plays next year cause it's kinda like what they did last year. They signed him to a 1-year deal to say, 'we'll bring you back for the money you want next year if you play good enough.' and he's been injured this year so they can try again. Nelson i gave the same contract as Pulock. Maybe more like 3M?</div></div>
Tavares is a franchise player. Look at what other franchise players got in the last couple years. McDavid @ $12.5M, Price @ $10.5M... I guarantee if the Isles offer is $10.25M, Tavares walks. There's a dozen teams lined up to bid for his services. As for de Haan, he's heading into the prime of his career. If the Isles are offering another one year deal and a cut in pay, de Haan will turn to the UFA market and be offered much more. If I'm being honest, looks like you cut contracts wherever you could to BARELY get under the cap. Good news is, the cap will be between $78M-$82M next year, so you could actually offer more.

steps to get better
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Truebeliever</b></div><div>Montreal never gives rookies their big raises on contract #2. It's always a bridge. It only backfires when you get a guy like Subban, but there are many who think that Subban only developed the way he did because he felt the need to prove himself. Danault will get something in the $2Ms this year for 2-3 years. Lehkonen and Mete will get decent second contracts. Juulsen is still a long way from that.
Kovy will go where the money is -- simple. Never has that been more true of a hockey player. I don't think I'd want him, but I don't see the Habs being able to get away with not spending to the cap two years in a row. The fans will freak. So, even if they take over Spezza's contract for the last year, that's better than doing nothing.</div></div>
It's not always a bridge. Gallagher and Drouin for example. I think Danault gets a term of at least 4 years at $3.5M.
I agree that Kovy will go where the money is. The high taxes in QC will make sure he stays far away from Montreal though. Just like Radulov. He received the same offer from DAL and MTL and chose the lower taxes in Texas.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Truebeliever</b></div><div>Kovalchuk will sign for 1 year if it's a really big number, because if he proves himself, he'll get that really big number again the next year.
None of those guys are going to get their big $$$ on the next contract, so you'll need maybe $8M to cover all of their raises, but by then, the cap will grow and Petry will be gone.</div></div>
That plan only works if it's Kovy, and the chances of him coming to MTL are extremely slim. There's so many other teams that go before MTL on his list due to taxes alone. You're also banking on those youngsters having mediocre years next year. Lehkonen scored 18 last year and would probably be there again this year if not for the injury trouble, Hudon may break out after a full year in the bigs, Scherbak's looking better and better... $8M for those three might be tight.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Truebeliever</b></div><div>Why would you underspend by as much as $10M? Why not offer Kovalchuk $8M for 1 year?
Generally, I'd say you've undervalued most of the Habs players. You should get more for Max and Shaw.</div></div>
I don't think we want to be spending to the cap with Lehkonen, Hudon and Scherbak becoming RFAs and Mete and Juulsen following a year later. No big name UFA will sign for just one year.
I agree that we could probably get a little more for Patch though.

Petry has played like a 1D in Weber's absence and is signed until 2021. That's a TERRIBLE return. MTL got him for two picks because he was on an expiring contract.

I'll shoot myself in the face if the Habs sign Bozak. He's gonna want more term than that anyway and I doubt MB would give it to him. Danault is gonna get at least $3.5M also.

This trade is laughable unless you think Lucic can keep up with today's game (which he clearly can't). Imagine how much worse he'll be at 33, 34...
Galchenyuk, McCarron, Scherbak, Juulsen, Sergachev, Poehling... Bergevin/Timmons have a pretty good track record for 1st rounders actually, especially considering 4/6 were chosen 25th or later. I'd rather keep the picks.
