Bruins add Schenn and Coyle
TRADE 1
STL traded for two 1st round picks and a cap dump (Lehtera) for Schenn when he had 3 years on his contract.
Bruins are giving up two players who were first round picks (and are NHL ready) plus a cap dump for Schenn with 1.5 years left on his contract.
TRADE 2
Minnesota needs centers going forward and JFK is a good young two-way player and was Greenway's center at BU. Added the 2nd round pick because I wasn't sure what other prospect would be of interest or fill an area of need for MIN.

Tarasenko and Bozak
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>well, yes and no. This version is cap complaint, but I'm kind of assuming that this trade was made in the 2018-2019 season. Maybe that was dumb of me. If that is the case, the Bruins are sure to run into a cap overage of around 2 million, which would take 2 million off the cap for this year. Then you have to look at the contracts. 2.5 million for carlo is doubtful, I would tend to think that it would be 3-3.5 on a 2 or 3 year bridge, and more in line with what Chychrun got if they go beyond that. McAvoy isn't taking that kind of term for less than what ekblad got in my opinion, so there goes your cap room even if there isnt' an overage.
Then if Chara is taking an incentive based deal in this contract, you would have to think that would mean the incentives are at least 4 million, and are all extremely attainable, so then there's a 4 million overage even if debrusk or studnicka or whichever ELC contract makes the roster doesn't hit their bonuses. That's going to make it tough to re-sign Debrusk, Grizz, and Krug. It just doesn't seem to work.</div></div>
If they wait until the deadline the Bruins would have more than enough cap space to make that deal this year. They take on $6.5m in AAV and according to this site they could add almost $13m at the deadline. They can’t do it today but in a few weeks they’ll have enough space banked to take on those pro rated salaries.
I researched the extensions too.
For McAvoy I looked at Hanifin and Reilly who both signed for $5, Seth Jones at $5.5. Ekblad was an outlier at 7.5 so I split the difference at $6.5.
For Carlo I looked at Ryan Murray, Dumba, Trouba and Zadorov who all signed for $2.1-3m on short term deals.
Chara is a fair point, but he’s missed significant time this year. He took a pay cut last year and I expect that to continue as his role gets more and more reduced. Even then, we’re talking about those bonuses putting them over by $2-3m, that’s not a hard number to clear. Maybe they buy out Bozak’s last year or trade Kevan Miller. Plus, those issues (signing DeBrusk and Krug) are two playoffs from now, Bergeron will be 35 and Krejci 34, at that point they may want to make a change to some core pieces and transition in some more youth.

Hayes Trades
If I were Boston I’d be ok with that proposed deal.
It will be interesting to see what kind of return Hayes brings. He’s averaged 48 points per 82 games over his career but he’s having the best offensive season of his life in a contract year.
Honestly, if the Rangers really believe he’s really an 80 point center now they should just sign him.

Tarasenko and Bozak
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LGBstl</b></div><div>Bozak at 1 mil cheaper and younger is > Backes, but lets say thats a wash. </div></div>
Yes, that part of the deal was intended to be a wash. Bozak has a lower cap hit but Backes is actually owed less dollars. Bozak fills a need for Boston and I thought Backes could help with the leadership in STL.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LGBstl</b></div><div>So you want Tarasenko for Vaakainen, Frederic and a 1st... </div></div>
Yes, this is what the deal boils down to, it’s essentially three 1st round picks for Tarasenko. I based it off of recent, comparable trades (like Kessel for two 1sts and a 2nd). Both of those prospects are first round picks and developing well, the Bruins see them as top of the roster guys. They had outstanding camps and are NHL ready.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>Forget the trade, which is off significantly in value....the NHL has a salary cap</div></div>
The roster is cap compliant, though it did require Chara to sign a bonus laden contract like Iginla and Recchi did. I put him down at $1m as a base but expect they’d give him $2-3m in easily attainable bonuses.

Bruins re-sign Rick Nash
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ItWasIn</b></div><div>I think you could get Nash between 4-5. I think 6 is a bit of an overpayment</div></div>
You may be right. I went with worst case scenario to see if the numbers worked from a cap perspective. Sweeney gave Backes $6m per season, so I used that as my model for Nash's extension. I'd love to get him cheaper though!

Bruins re-sign Rick Nash
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>FryesLeapMaine</b></div><div>That Nash deal is Brutal. Next Season we have about 6M in space + a likely 3M increase. We'd have 9M to sign McAvoy Heinen and Carlo..... McAvoy himself probably takes up 6M so you do the math.</div></div>
If you click on the long-term outlook tab, you can see they actually have $20m in cap space the year you're talking about. That's $20m to sign Mac, Heinen and Carlo. There is no issue there.
Plus, they've got another wave of young (i.e. cheap) players coming along, and Krejci and Backes' NMC's switch to limited NTC's so they should have some flexibility if they choose to use it.

What I'd like to see...
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>boston781</b></div><div><i>You'd like to see Kevan Miller get 3.25 a year for 4 years? Did you watch him play this year? He doesn't even deserve a lick over 1 million.</i></div></div>
Yes. I signed K.Miller for two reasons.
1) You need to expose 25% of last year's salary at the expansion draft next summer. That's actually a pretty hard number to hit, roughly $18m. So I expect to expose him and I expect him to get taken.
2) I think asking him to play top pair minutes with Chara is too much, and that if he could play against weaker opponents in the second pair, he'd be a fine stop-gap until Carlo is ready. I mean, even being in over his head, going against other team's top lines every night, he still posted the highest +/- among the defense. And he had the highest +/- on the team last year. He's not garbage, he's just been asked to do too much.

Pie In the Sky
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kally</b></div><div><i>I did something very similar. Not really going to look at it from a "realistic" standpoint since Stamkos won't be signing here.
With that....
You're basically at 3 million over the salary cap. I don't like the Krejci for Myers straight up trade. Would rather go for Trouba, and would want a little more coming back. Keeping Seidenberg as the #7 at 4 million is overkill. He too needs to go.</i></div></div>
Fwiw, I had Seidenberg bought out so it came in under the cap. Not sure why that's not showing up.
