More draft picks (WPG, CAR, ANA, CGY)
I like the RFA trades and actually after thinking about it am on board with the Mason trade. Only 1 year left on his deal so no harm to the Rags.
Do you think that Smith will get another chance at the NHL roster? Didn't keep tabs on him after he got sent down. I know NYR have many young D men in the pipeline (Day, Lindgren, Hajek, you've added Fox) who might be better used in that spot.

bring on bad contracts
Washington has enough space to sign Carlson and Wilson. Orpik trade is unnecessary.
If you want bad contracts, there are plenty of others to be found. Seabrook? Clutterbuck? Ladd? Boychuk? Alzner? Dubinsky? Bogosian? Marc Staal?
I think turning Detroit from Hockeytown to Cap Dump Central will be difficult with the bad contracts they already carry but more importantly will be offensive to Zetterberg. Try a Rangers-esque retool this year while he plays out the string.

Zadina---Trocheck-Brodin---Stastny-Perron
Whew, a lot of wheeling and dealing there to get the assets to acquire Trocheck. Even though the first pick is not going to be great, I don't think the blues would give up all 3 of those assets for Patches. If Florida was unwilling to give up a 1st at the deadline then I expect STL would not give up a 1st, AND two potential top 6 fwds in the offseason.
All that aside, this team could be nasty if everyone stayed healthy and played to their potential. I doubt it will be possible because Bergefail would have to win several trades to pull it off. Not to mention doing a lot of it before July 1 to convince Stastny and Perron to sign.

What do you think?
ROR trade is great. 2 birds, 1 stone.
Bettman recently announced that Seattle is not on the agenda for the upcoming Board of Governor's Meeting. I highly doubt any team gets moved barring an arena/owner emergency before Seattle gets their expansion team. Considering Vegas' new success and popularity, you'd have to think that the league would want to stagger the amount of new teams entering too, so any Quebec move would most likely take place at least a year after Seattle.
We will see what unfolds in the Dundon era. So far it hasn't looked great lol

Next Year Knights
Signings are OK (I think Neal might get more $$ and Karlsson more term) but not really a fan of any of these trades. For one, Vegas already has a surplus of future picks. I think the odds of them going +10 in futures via summer trades are almost as long as MAF scoring the Cup winning goal. They have plenty of cap space and can hang on to whomever they wish.
VAN trade is an unnecessary downgrade for the 2nd pairing and a strange trade in general - Vegas is competing now while Vancouver likely won't for a few years. Why would either of them make this deal?
Caps have enough money to keep Carlson without dumping the last year of Orpik's (who has reclaimed some value with his playoff performance) deal, especially not at the cost of 3 picks and a prospect for an AHLer and 3rd pairing downgrade.
NYR have plenty of wingers already and it seems that opinion around the league was that Tatar for a 1, 2, and 3 was an overpay Vegas could afford to make. NYR has no reason to make this deal especially considering the shape of their current roster and the direction of the team.
I've read Delia has legit NHL potential while I doubt Lagace is considered as highly. And when was the last time AHL goalies were swapped with so much draft capital changing hands?

Playoff Roster Without Carlson
Grubi trade is decent though I think the Caps would look at one of the Isles' two 2nds this year instead of the 3rd. Ho-Sang probably is only an option if the Caps trade Burakovsky. As much as I like Burkie as a person, as a hockey player he isn't getting it done. He gets pushed around way too easily and his shifts are a whole lot of nothing punctuated by a sporadic few instances where he uses his speed to create an opportunity but fails to score or even finish a passing play. EDM is looking for speed on the wing this offseason, and I've heard a rumor that Peter Chiarelli hasn't won every trade he's ever made.
I love Hanifin but this roster doesn't need another LHD, especially if they re-sign Kempny without re-signing Carlson. 5 LHD in the top 6? Mike Babcock is screaming insults at you from somewhere. Who will be the power play QB? Asking Niskanen or Orlov to handle it would be too much given their other responsibilities. I see Carlson as plan A, and then Mike Green as plan B. A RHD with defensive warts who can keep OV fed on the power play. Sound familiar?
I doubt Beagle gets re-signed as great as he has been. Same to a lesser extent with DSP. Caps have Boyd, Gersich, Walker, AJF, Pinho, and most likely Stephenson (if he's not top 9) gunning for 4th line spots next year. Too many young guys on cheap contracts to pay Beags. Also if they do re-sign Kempny it should be for about half of what you've given him. His current contract signed with the Blackhawks was only for 800k/yr.

Pens Retool
I like your thinking behind this but I am not sure you give NSH a reason to move Ekholm. Hagelin is a nice piece but NSH is flush with speedy wingers and will also have to make room in the lineup for Tolvanen next year. Even if the Preds move Rinne in the final year of his deal, I am not convinced that a team with Cup aspirations would be happy with the young, talented, but mostly unproven duo in Saros/Jarry.
Would have done 3.5 stars if I could because the other trades seem imminent in some form, but since it's the Penguins I round down. Have fun on the golf course fellas

They don't have the roster space or the cap space for him really. Maybe if OTT retains ~2M, but still Ryan would be fighting with Cogs/Domi/Kase for a spot in the top 9 and unless Eaves misses next season too, one of those guys would be relegated to fourth line duty. Pass.

Trades with MIN, MTL and PIT
I think Lucic deal is tough as MTL would be placing a lot of pressure on Strome as the main immediate return, and Strome did not exactly thrive under the pressure of living up to replacing Eberle this year. MTL would definitely peg him as a 2C with either Drouin or a top FA to play 1C and that is asking a lot of him, especially as it would be his 3rd team in as many years.
MIN deal seems fair but not sure what it really achieves other than a change of scenery for the players involved. Yes, Coyle is cheaper to slot in as a 3C behind 97/29 but is it really worth it?
Variations of the PIT deal have been floating around this site for weeks. I think PIT doesn't need to include the pick; the teams can just do this deal as a straight up 4 player swap.
I think a JVR-McJesus-Rattie line could be awesome

Too many moving parts to what is effectively a trade where the Bruins push to acquire Hanifin. Take out Lindholm and Senyshyn/Zboril, I think the trade is still fair.
Maybe the Bruins throw in a mid round pick, one of Czarnik/Cehlarik/Blidh, or retain some of Krug's salary if Carolina needs a nudge.

I think the only part of this AGM that is truly very unrealistic is the Sens acquiring another older (26+) wing who will be expensive. They already have Hoffman, Stone, and let's not forget about Bobo Ryan. 2 firsts make this deal at least somewhat palatable but if the Ducks actually make an EK trade push the roster players included would be much different.

Per GMJR, Kris Letang is NOT Untouchable (TOR This Pertains to You)
Pittsburgh doesn't need Carlson even if they trade Letang. Schultz can handle PP1 duty which is where a lot of Carlson's value comes from. Furthermore, if GMJR does move Letang I doubt it will be to bring in yet another wing to clog up the roster. He has been quoted as saying Sprong will be a lineup regular next season, which means that signing an UFA like Grabner will flat out not happen if they end up even (+2 -2) in the offseason trade market for wings.

Give me your most honest criticism, blockbuster Canes
I am higher on Gauthier than most on this site and yet I feel the Canes win this deal by a mile. They need an RNH type on their roster, and clearing off inessential roster pieces to get back the best player in the deal, the 10th overall pick in what everyone seems to believe is a loaded draft, and even Russell at that retained contract is extracting a lot of value.
Faulk had a bad year, yes, but his value is hugely inflated by his 'name-brand' status as well as his offensive counting stats. To me he is like a poor man's John Carlson, and if the offense isn't elite to mitigate the below average defense then he isn't nearly as valuable as RHD desperate teams will consider him to be.
Finally, I agree Rask is overpaid and have seen multiple Canes fans on here claim that he is more of a 3C than top 6 wing.

If you haven't watched him play recently, then you shouldn't be trading for him on CF. And if you have watched him play, you would see that he has been nothing short of excellent offensively with Ovechkin and Kuznetsov since joining their line. A few bad penalties, a lot of big hits, and unquestionable offensive skill. Caps will not be trading him this offseason.

Not really sure what the point is of the Carolina deal, you arguably downgrade at two positions for the chance to move a LHD for a right hander whose underlying metrics have been shockingly awful. <a href="/users/Bluetomorrow83" target="_blank">@Bluetomorrow83</a> makes good points with Rask's role (Yama has a much better shot at success on the wing beside mcjesus/Leon) as well as your RFA negligence.
One more point - I see a lot of Lucic to VAN trades on here but I have to think the Nucks value Tanev (who could probably fetch a haul from the Leafs) and Leipsic (who had decent success after being traded from Vegas) much more than you do here. The picks are probably necessary just to mitigate the negative value of Lucic's contract - you expect to get a top 4 RHD (and playing him bottom pair lol) and a useful bottom six fwd on top of that?

1 star for willlingly taking on probably the NHL's worst contract right now in Seabrook - and with no retention at that. You also gave up useful pieces and got back Kero, who couldn't crack the big club in chi town, and 6 years of dead weight.

You'll have to pay more than a 1st and 4th I'd think to get NYR to give up Kreider AND take on Looch's anchor of a contract in the process.
Trades with PIT and CAR are good and help each team achieve their offseason goals. EDM will be a great place for Sheary to end up and play top 6. Should be able to get more for Kassian than a distant 7th.
Have to think you overpaid some of the RFAs a bit.

I agree that more salary retention=more value, but don't sleep on the value of a #34 overall pick! If FLA was willing to part with their 1st then I think this deal would have happened at the deadline.
Yes, Sulak is 24 already but has only played 2 pro games in North America, as he spent most of this past season in the Finnish top league picking up over 0.75 PPG. I remember watching him at a World Juniors and thinking that despite his size and physical play, he had excellent skating ability.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BigBeardBurns</b></div><div>I dont get the Det trade, but the rest is cool.</div></div>
Cheers for the rating. DET trade is necessitated by adding Zadina. Hudon was productive in his first extended look with MTL, scoring 30 points in 72 games this year. With Drouin, Zadina, Lehkonen on the left side, there is no space for Hudon to carve out a meaningful role. Wings can probably fit him onto their 3rd line.
I also wanted to move Schlemko off this roster and I felt that especially at a cap hit of 1M, DET considers him an improvement to their LD core of DDK, Ericsson, and Ouellet. Personally, I am really low on Ericsson. Just about every time I watch the Wings his lack of speed and ability with the puck seems to stand out.
MTL is happy to add the picks, clear some roster clutter, and get Sulak to marinate in the minors for a year or two.

A bit of a bait and switch by using the title 'embracing the tank' while making a 20m+ splash in FA w/ Stastny, but I definitely think MTL will be the #1 contender to overpay him in the likely event that they whiff on both JTs (Thornton could be useful for a team desperate down the middle, but I doubt he leaves SJ).
