(WSH / COL) - 2018 2nd round pick for Grubauer, Orpik
Both teams achieve their goals here. Caps move Grubi, get cap space, and pick up an asset, while Avs add two cup rings, a very competent goaltender, and Orpik's gritty leadership into their young locker room. Fair deal.

Potential to develop into more than just a poor man's Krug replacement IMO. Solid value for a guy who has shown he can play decent 3rd pair at minimum.

Wheeeew - fair deal I guess as two talented guys can hope a change of scenery unlocks more of their talent, but damn I thought Chucky would be more costly for any team to acquire. Chayka deserves the W here if galchenyuk becomes even a second line force.

I am still holding out hope that this guy can be a top 6 power forward, but I think at the very least he can be a useful bottom 6 physical presence and PK guy. Great value for that role and even better if he can provide offense too.

Lou's Path to Ring #4: Doughty, Hanifin, Kovy
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ekpaul87</b></div><div>Not sure LA looks at the Isles roster and accepts all of their secondary parts in exchange for an elite player. Think they would get a better offer elsewhere (or would insist on something starting with Barzal or Lee).</div></div>
The crown jewel of the Doughty trade is not the "secondary parts" but the #12 overall pick. Given Doughty's likely departure, the Kings would be smart to get a high pick in 2018's deep draft compared to an unknown pick at the trade deadline in 2019's weaker draft. Lee is certainly tradable but Barzal is not.
I do not understand why so many people on this site think that Barzal could be traded, in any capacity. The modern NHL has shown that players who can produce at an elite level while still on their ELCs are the most valuable asset in the league. Barzal for Doughty straight up would be a coup for LA and grounds for NYI to fire Lou immediately. Imagine two offseasons ago if Subban, Weber, or Larsson had been offered in exchange for McDavid. Not saying Barzal is as good as #97, but he did just put up 85 points in 82 games and is under contract for 2 more years at under 1 million per. I invite you to find a more valuable asset in the league. Possibly Sidney Crosby who is getting paid Leon Draisatl money for the next 7 years, but that only helps my point. Crosby would never get traded for 1 year of Doughty, and neither would Barzal.

Caps say no. They want to keep Wilson and don't have roster space to add 2 D men unless they let both Carlson/Kempny walk AND sit one of Orpik/Benning/Bowey every night.

Lou Saves The Islanders
<a href="/users/leemos27" target="_blank">@leemos27</a> Your take is ludicrous. Barzal, a player who just scored 85 points in 82 games on the first year of his ELC, might be the most valuable contract in the league right now. Please, I'll wait, find me a contract where the player's production for the next two years will be comparable to a top six center producing at a point per game clip but making under 1M.....Didn't find any? So Barzal's contract is the most valuable one in the league at the moment. Perhaps Dahlin will overtake him after the first 10 games, but we have yet to see him play an NHL game yet. Seems premature.
Rinne is a 35 year old goalie who just had an embarrassing meltdown in the playoffs, and is under contract for only one more year. The Preds also will have to give Saros a new contract this offseason which will indicate how they view the position going forward. They would be lucky to get a top 15 pick in this draft for Peks, all things considered.
Now let's address the other moves, or lack thereof. Given that this is practically the exact same team as last year, plus Kovy, Kief, and JHS, I really don't think that Lou is "saving" anyone here. If anything, it is lazy. You did nothing to address what was an awful defensive core last season except hope that a healthy de Haan will somehow transform the D group (Spoiler alert: it won't). You also failed to re-sign or trade the rights of Brock Nelson to a team with a need for a middle six C (MTL, CAR, ANA if Kesler is out, BUF if they move ROR, etc etc etc). My point is there will be suitors. Nelson, MVS, and a 2nd rounder might be enough to get Carolina to give up one of their young defensemen. That trade would upgrade this roster. Please do your RFA homework next time before posting.

From what I've heard from other Blues fans on this site, I think it will. His value is at an all time low after another ACL tear, and there's no guarantee he will return to his previous form. I believe I gave him a bridge deal with terms similar to this one in an AGM I made a few months ago and I was told his value was lower.

Agreed - he couldn't crack 45 points in 81 games last season. While he still has plenty of time to develop, I wouldn't give up those three pieces for Lindholm's risky upside.

Not Too Big, but big none the less. Trades with EDM/STL/CBJ/NYI/ARI/PHI/MTL
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>arafay</b></div><div>Perrault is not overvalued because he could have had over 50 points this season. Maybe make the 3rd a 4th but the value is fine IMO.
As far chevy being allergic to trades goes, he is not. He just doesn't make bad/unnecessary trades like Bergefail and Chiarelli. He was right to make only 3 trades in his time because he was building this team. Look at his 3 trades so far, their genius. I think these trades are great for the jets and are all things chevy could pull off.</div></div>
Not to get hung up on one player but I'm going to argue your point that a 1st/4th is 'fair value' for Perrault. Look at the Kane deadline deal this year. A 1st/4th and fringe prospect for Kane. Yes, EK is a wing while Perrault can play C but you're in the minority if you think Perrault has more trade value. As for saying he 'could have' had 50 points this year... he didn't. Combine his playoff totals and you get 40 points in 79 GP. Kane, on the other hand, had 59 points in 87 GP. Not comparable to me.
Also, not saying Chevy never makes trades, but expecting him to become this prolific (7 distinct offseason trades) practically overnight is straight up ridiculous.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MNBassman</b></div><div>All true, but if the Rags are truly going to rebuild...they might want to consider acquiring Kaprizov to play alongside Filip Chytil someday...</div></div>
Sure - but not for their #1 centerman. I expect NYR to trade multiple wingers this offseason as they have plenty to go around (Kreider, Zucc, Vesey, Spooner, Namestnikov) and signed 2 Euro FAs who could play in the NHL next year. Yet, aside from Buchnevich, their organization is almost completely devoid of any future top 6 wings. I doubt they laser in on KK, but it could indicate a focus of their draft/offseason strategy.
Not trying to hijack your Kaprizov appreciation thread but I think it might be a year too early to start boarding the hype train.

And somehow they stay under the cap!!! Great job here, and yes, this team would definitely be a cup contender. Of course goaltending would be the biggest question mark but both these guys are solid NHL tendies so you'd think someone would grab the reins. And if not, who cares - this team is dripping with offensive firepower.

And wow didn't even notice Filppula signing at first. He had 33 points in 81 games as a 34 year old this year, and you want to give him 14 million with all the Laffs impending cap decisions???? Yikes.

Gaining some youth - trades with MTL, EDM, ARI, CAR
I liked the MTL trade until I saw the 1st rounder swap. With all the other criticism he has taken, I don't think Bergefail can move the #3 pick for anything but a 1C or stud defenseman. Namestnikov can play center but I don't consider him to be a 1C.
Kreider is an interesting trade candidate to EDM but once again I don't think Chia would be able to trade his best defenseman AND #10 pick this year for two upgrades on McJesus/Drai/RNH wing and a fringe D man.
Rest of the trades are effectively cap dumps. I think you may have miscast Panik and Merkley in their roles especially with Lias manning the fourth line.
Your overall strategy here is good though.

Good trades but I think you are over valuing Perrault, even after considering that the WPG 1st in 2018 will be late in the round. This would be an effective yet doable offseason for Peg. And btw, agree with your point that Mrazek will not get his QO and become an UFA.
My only issue is you fail to recognize that Kevin "allergic to trades" Cheveldayoff is running this team IRL!

bring on bad contracts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jfstompers</b></div><div>I dont mind an orpik deal since he has 1 year left. It would have to be a really sweet deal for detroit to take on multi year cap dump like the guys you mentioned. Its getting picks and young guys as we wait for the bad contracts we have to lessen.</div></div>
Sure but the Caps will not be doing an Orpik dump this offseason. If they were ever going to offload his salary it would have been this past offseason so they wouldn't have had to trade Johansson to NJ for peanuts. Orpik also has played well this postseason.
Detroit is stuck in no mans land until Zetterberg retires. If he follows through with his intention of 2018-2019 being his final season, the Wings will incur a cap recapture penalty of $5,083,335 for 2019-2020 AND 2020-2021. Factor in Abdelkader and Helm's bloated long term contracts for bottom six guys and there is no clear path for Detroit to contention in the next few years due to too much bad money on the books and not enough cheap talent in the pipeline.
It seems to me that the best way forward (which will never happen with Ken Holland in charge) is to adapt the Sixers' Process to the NHL. Sell off any and every resource possible for future returns. Use cap space to take on bad contracts for future returns. Give waiver claims/fringe prospects a look against NHL competition to see if there are any gems hiding in the bargain bin. After 2-3 years of fielding a non-competitive roster and amassing top picks and young talent, use assets to move on from the final years of Abdelkader/any remaining bad money and aim to contend again. Additionally, this strategy will help the Wings get through the upcoming Seattle expansion draft unscathed - and might even help them take advantage of other teams' poor strategic planning by trading for their players before Seattle poaches them for free.

Trade with Tampa and Toronto
Gonna echo everyone else here that I really like the Spezza trade but I would target Pickard (or Sparks) if possible and keep Shore.
Johnson would be a great complement to Faksa as middle six centers who can make a sizeable impact on offense and defense, respectively. Would really help the NHL rookie coach not depend on the big guns for every important shift. Someday, Hanzal might return as an NHL player in which case you can bump Johnson to a wing spot on the second line.
I have been intrigued by Dallas' D prospects for years and am hoping Heiskanen can make the big club. While Seidenberg was mostly awful for NYI this year he is the perfect 7D for this team, as he can sit in the press box for long stretches, mentor the young D men, and draw into the lineup if Montgomery sees too many mistakes from a young guy and wants to give him a break for a game or two.

Crazy trades amount to crazy cap space. So do you need to trade Blais to unload Bouwmeester's deal? Seems like poor asset management.

Karlsson contract looks good. I think an overpay on Miller, but the rest of the contracts are fine. Grabner and Cole would be welcome additions.
Flip Haula and Eakin in the lineup.
I don't think Vegas trades Carpenter. They like him as a bottom six wing, and he is a Bowling Green guy (McPhee's alma mater).
Finally, I think Vegas definitely makes a major move this offseason to soak up some of their cap space - either to acquire more dead weight like Clarkson (Hossa a possibility) or to add a stud like J Carlson, E Karlsson, or Doughty to their D core.
