Leafs aren't retaining on a Kampf deal. I don't even think he's available. The guy shows up in the playoffs. They'll keep him around.

Off Season ReTool
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Synergy</b></div><div>But it is a 25-year-old centre for a 27-year-old winger. Pettersson being younger, a centre, and locked up long term (to a contract that will likely be less than Marner asks for) holds higher value.</div></div>
Who is giving Marner 11 million on the open market? I don't think that type of deal is out there unless a team overpays. The fact he only has 1 year left makes him tradeable. And Pettersson being locked up is a negative thing because he's proven he can't contribute when it matters. Which contender wants to allocate 11.6 million to a guy who disappears in May for the next 8 years?

Leafs fans found excuses for Marner too. "He's great defensively." "He's shutting down Pasta." "He gets all the tough match ups." "He still has the most points."
Eye test never fails. Elias and Mitch just aren't cut out for playoff hockey.

They're going to resign Domi. If they move on from Marner they might look at Bertuzzi. They still need a goalie, atleast two top 4 D and oh yeah, try to replace the giant gaping hole trading Marner left in their production.
They aren't signing;
Guentzel
Necas
Reinhart
Jarvis
Skeji
Who is it you're looking at that makes sense for a "cap dump" Marner deal?</div></div>

Joshua
Arvidsson

It allows a trade to happen to a contending team that would actually spend the assets to acquire a 10M RW rental coming off the worst playoff performance of the last decade from a superstar with a FULL NMC.
You are going to be one pissed off fan this summer.</div></div>
It's addition by subtraction at this point with Marner. I just want the Leafs to gain the cap space.

You will have to take salary back or you will have to retain if he's traded this summer. That's not something that's up for debate.</div></div>
I prefer they retain. Even 3 million, making him an 8 million dollar player next year and increasing his value. I hope Treliving gets creative with the trade.

Why the **** would the Leafs be interested in PICKS AND PROSPECTS right now?
JFC, is every leaf fan just delusional?
Graves is not great, Jarry's contract isn't "unmovable"
The Leafs will not have alot of suitors. They'll have a few tire kickers, Vegas will be someone who's interested. Dallas maybe, Colorado maybe if they can move on from Val in the deal. That's the fkn list.
Can they trade him straight up for Theodore? Probably
They'd have to take the tire fire out of Colorado to move him there, good luck with that.
They have ZERO leverage. If Mitch doesn't want to go anywhere and gets pissy that they're trying to trade him AFTER HE "allegedly" REJECTED TWO OFFER SHEETS TO STAY IN TORONTO AND NOT FORCE THEM TO MATCH, he can WALK for NOTHING next summer, just like Johnny Hockey did.
Who was the GM that ****ed that up with Johnny Hockey anyway?
YEAH THE ****ING CLOWN SHANAHAN HIRED.</div></div>
Apparently Marner wants out. It's just about finding the right fit. And Leafs will take back picks and prospects because they want the cap space to go shopping in free agency. That's the best course of action imo. Taking back salary would be a bad idea.

Being the best defenceman on the Leafs is not a high bar. He probably would be. But that doesn't make him a top 2 defenceman.

Marner won't ask for more than 12 million, which is still a lot, but he's not demanding to be the highest paid player in the league. He's not that delusional.

Petterson is not a top 2 defenceman lol. And Pens are still competing for a cup and for a playoff spot so their future 1sts don't hold that much value. They'll probably be picking in the 13-20 range next year.

Any trade involving Marner will be a sign and trade. Otherwise Leafs will probably just hold onto him and let him walk next year. And this is not a deadline deal, many teams will be in the equation so the return will be bigger than the Guentzel deal.

Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dunphy66</b></div><div>This doesn't matter.
He has a full NMC and his a pending UFA with a MASSIVE cap hit.
The only teams kicking tires on him, are contenders or teams on the cusp of contending.
The Penguins traded an elite left winger, in his prime, at a much more manageable cap hit, and didn't get a top 4 D back.
The leafs need a goaltender and they need probably two top 4 D.
The penguins are not a fit for Marner, but if they were to make a trade, it's Jarry + Graves for Marner and no kicker.</div></div>
Pens don't have the picks and prospects to go big game hunting. And Marner is big game this offseason. A lot of teams will try to trade for him. The only question is where does he want to play? It's going to come down to him, and that's why any return won't be big. But for the Leafs the best thing they can get would be the cap space. Graves and Jerry are bad contracts, they're not movable assets.
