We want nada. AA was there as filler

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Snowhawk18</b></div><div>The Hawks are not going to gift the Leafs close to $7m for free.</div></div>
Tavares has $1m in actual salary and a big hit. The Hawks are still building. This provide 3 major things for them:
1. A salary cap floor driver
2. Tavares, who will be a strong mentor and center for Bedard
3. A first or second round pick when they trade him at the deadline
While on paper it seems like a "dump", Tavares is not a horrible hockey player. He is a top faceoff guy in the league, a 60 pt+ scorer and a great leader. Very valuable trade deadline piece.

Leafs aren't taking on 3 bad contracts for Marner.
Pulock is a great dman. But he is consistently injured and his contract is going to look horrible soon.
I get it, Leaf fans are shotting Marner into the moon right now. But he is a top 20 forward in the league. He's not being traded for a bag of pucks

Hyman had similar stats in Toronto. I heavily blame the coach for his stats as well. He's a top 10 winger in the league. Many teams would drool to have him.

Big D but who is 3rd line C
We have only had one other top 2 defensemen other than Mo play on the Leafs for the last 10 seasons - Muzzin.
Getting Skjei and Roy gives us 3. Adds to our top heavy forward group to be our best all around team. We finally have a salary cap situation that will enable us to solve for this. I like Domi, but there’s a reason he has never stuck on a team. He’s good, but much easier to replace than a top 2 d man.

Kampf and Jarnkrok are both tradable salaries. That frees up another $4.5m. So that’s nearly $5.5m to sign guys like Wennberg, Henrique, etc.

Ha, good catch. I'm old enough to remember driving downtown to celebrate Leafs conference finals wins blasting the Leafs/Metalica song, Enter Sandman. So yes, basically a pun of bringing back the old, but also building from the d-core forward next year.

I think this would be the worst Leafs team since Matthews entered the league. Overpaying Bush, Edmundson and Tatar should not be on this team.
We have money to spend in a smart way. Why would we do any of this?

Leafs Finally Do What is Needed Next Year
The Leafs biggest problem right now upfront is that while Domi is strong offensively, he is a black hole on D. So our second line is often a liability. Nylander can run a line on his own. Put him with a responsible two-way center in Wennberg, who is also strong on the draw, and a big body in Greenway and that could be a formidable line.

D moves
Liljegren is better than Dumba and is an RFA with control. Not to mention he is many years younger.
McBain can be had for a late draft pick. Robertson is 22 and on pace for a 40 pt season.
Why would the Leafs make this trade?
Also, we aren't trading a first for Tanev.

Have you seen their right-wing depth? They have none. And with both stars and prospects, they are stacked on the left.
Miller will also be pricing himself out of the team on his next contract. Especially with the Fox and Trouba deals.

They are still in a rebuild. Schmaltz has two years left on his deal and should be their 3rd line C next year (Hayton and Cooley). So why not get the value?
