2024 Draft Moving Down - SEA and CGY - Thoughts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>If the first four go as expected (Celebrini, Demidov, Levshunov and Lindstrom), then Seattle is almost guaranteed to get one of Dickinson, Buium or Silayev, so I don't see them moving up. Only if one of the LhDs goes at #4 do I see the Kraken expending a good asset doing this. And that's assuming that they don't have their eyes on a forward like Eiserman or Catton or a RhD like Parekh. All in all, I think that there is a sufficient number of excellent prospects in the top-tier pool that Seattle will be quite happy with #8, just as Anaheim was when Trevor Zegras popped up at #9.</div></div>
I didn’t thought I had to mention it but MTL don’t trade the pick if one of Demidov/Lindstrom is available at 5. You are definitely right with SEA, doesn’t make sense for them to move up

For the Preds... just give up on any hope of ever getting Askarov. He's not available for anything y'all are able to offer. The last time he was rumored to even be in discussions, the target was one of the potential franchise players at the top of last year's draft, and y'all don't have a prospect of that level to offer.</div></div>
It was 5th OA (David Reinbacher) vs Askarov + 15th OA + I think EDM 1st and MTL declined …

As a result, if I were in the GM's seat and Mesar was the prospect coming back, I'd push for 5OA this year and Calgary's 25 1st-rounder instead of Colorado's 2nd-rounder this year, which is essentially a 3rd-round pick. I'm sure there'd be some give and take there, but moving up in the top 5, even a single slot, is exceptionally rare, and therefore exceptionally pricey.</div></div>
It’s not because it’s pricey, it’s just ridiculous moving up one spot. Don’t know if it actually happen in the past a team moving up one spot

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaseyFlyman</b></div><div>The answer really depends.
Is Columbus set on taking Lindsrom themselves? Then no.
Is Columbus set on taking BPA no matter what? Including a defenseman? And are we confident that MTL is taking the best forward available? Then yes, PuckPedia's pick value calculator has even value for 4OA at 5OA and 50OA. But I think Columbus would be more interested in making it hurt a little more for Montreal to get their guy...
If Silayev and Lindstrom are sitting there at 4OA, and Montreal strongly wants one, I'd take this trade and just pick whichever one they don't.</div></div>
It’s pretty unrealistic his scenario, if CBJ want Lindstrom, they will take him. If they target a dman, they will draft a dman and MTL will pick Lindstrom. But MTL aren’t trading a bunch of future just to get THEIR guy.

Anyone who listened to Hughes Speak ever knows what you're saying isnt true.
He's highlighted 2 straight drafts by trading for players like this on the cheap and has said he'll continue to make moves like that.
I get it , you loved Marc Bergavin but he's in LAK now
Hughes has been the complete opposite with a buy low , sell high Mantra.
Plus he deals with Kaliyevs Agent for multiple Habs</div></div>
Kent Hughes said he wants a team based on speed & talent (and bigger). Kaliyev as skating issues, I don’t think in MTL management look at Kaliyev and says : yep, he might upgrade his skating. Like why is Armia still training a piano then ? He has the chance to improve it and never did ? Stop replying, IMO I don’t think he is a possible target for MTL, you think they do. <div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dannibalcorpse</b></div><div>Based on trade value charts, the deal seems fair - #18OA for #26OA & #78OA works out to a slight overpay on the Shuckers' chart and a slight underpay DomtheAthletic's chart (I will -never- remember how to spell that last name.) Adding Struble makes this deal a win for the Isles in a vacuum.
But since we're not in a vacuum and we have to look at each team's needs, I think the Islanders decline. They have LD1 & LD2 set, so Struble is at best a 6th/7th D on this team - not a position that you would want to really target, especially when you have a pending UFA on your roster who has proven to be a good fit in that spot, and who probably won't cost much more than Struble's cap hit next year. Add in the fact that nearly every major publication ranks the Islanders' farm system in the bottom 5 of the league, with not a ton of NHL-projected talent in the pipeline, and I'd say I'd rather go ahead and keep the higher value pick and get a player more likely to be an impactful NHL player.</div></div>
A lot would depend if the Islanders want ‘X’ player at 18th but he goes before 18th, maybe their next players on their list are around 25ish, so they could do while getting a young LHD + 78th (for another prospect). Anyway, I took the Islanders but it could be another team, I think MTL have the assets to move up in the draft to select the guy they want (Beckett Sennecke)

Skating is equal
They have excellent breakout passes
Reilly is better offensively
Struble is better defensively
Struble is more physical :
Struble wins more puck battles
Struble takes out bodies in front of the net
The big difference is Reilly can run a PP while Struble will be used on the PK instead.

Matheson wasn't better this season than the last one. He was brutal defensively, but hey he put up 60 points so that means he was better, right ? Right ? He got a ton of points on the PP, that's means he's a good QB, right ? Right ? NO, he is a bad QB on the PP, can't make a pass on the tape, he was brutal defensively and he can't hit the net. When his contract expires, he will be 32 yo. He will be looking for a long terms deals and he will steal the QB position on the PP from Hutson (because he is a vet). Hutson-Reinbacher Guhle-Barron/Mailloux should be MTL top 4 in 2 years

We have a lot of defenders. Guhle is ahead of everyone right now, but that doesn't mean he can't be traded. The fact that there are so many guys behind him makes him the ideal player to trade.
Dach and Newhook are good players. I hope they can become core guys, but they aren't yet and when you look at the forwards in the system who are not yet core players:
Dach, Newhook, Roy, Beck, F. Xhekaj, Mesar, Tuch, Farrell, Kidney... There's not a ton of reason to believe that 4 core forwards will emerge from that bunch. We need to add an infusion of talent to that group in a big way.</div></div>
................................... Dude ... omg ... my eyes are bleeding
I was talking about left handed defenseman. Xhekaj Harris Struble are bottom pairing dman. Engstrom we will see, might have top 4 potential but let's see how he looks in Laval next year
Dach & Newhook are core players, like Suzuki Caufield Slafkovsky Guhle and Reinbacher. Those are the guys you will see in a Habs uniform in the next decade
You can't trade Guhle because you don't have LHD prospect with his potential or higher. Trading Guhle creates a whole on the blueline in two years

Habs have 2 dman under 25 yo with top pairing / top 4 potential : Kaiden Guhle & Lane Hutson
When Matheson deal expires, you have Guhle & Hutson on your top 4 for the next decade
You are forgetting that Dach has immense potential, we saw it during the 2nd half of the 2022-2023 season. Suzuki & Dach or Dach & Suzuki (we will see) is a really good 1-2C. If we get another top 6 C (let’s say we pick 1st OA or we draft Lindstrom and he becomes a beast, move Dach on the RW).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Billy316</b></div><div>6'2 and 209lbs thats not his game
Not saying it cant be added as Suzuki was Slow as Molasses when we got him
He trained 2 summers with London Knights with a Speed Skating Coach the Hunters employ for their Junior players in the summer.
Marner and Suzuki were there the summer before he joined MTL full time
Its not impossible to add that to Kaliyev's game as his Speed isnt bad he just takes time to build up momentum
I'd be far more interested in having him play that Physical game he avoids right now.
If we did bring him in i'd tell him up front whether or not he's extended depends on whether or not he's improved significantly in his skating or his Physical game.
TBH at his size and given our need i'd much rather a Physical Goal Scorer then a Speedy Goal Scorer.
Plus his advanced Stats are ahead of basically everyone but Suzuki in MTL right now.
His Defensive Play is vastly underrated and on par with the stats Danault holds
I dunno this is buy low on the 1st pick in the 2nd round of the 2019 Draft Hughes loves plucking talent from.
If he was 190lbs or something like that i would have no interest but at 209lbs he's got muscled packed on and a good solid foundation to build on
He has 2 glaring weaknesses we could address. I mean if MSL can make Slaf a 20 goal and 50 point scorer after the start he had to his sophomore season
Then working with Kaliyev shouldnt be that big of an issue.
If it works out imagine where we'll be ?
If it doesnt we just dont re-sign him
Either way what we're giving up is gonna be lost anyways
LAK lost a few players they liked for nothing in Anderson-Dolan and Bjornfot former 1st and 2nd round picks
Thats after having to sell low on Grans and Durzi because their log jam got too out of control
Same will be said of Harris and Struble as better players enter our crowded Dcore in NHL and AHL levels
Even if Kaliyev gamble fails we have a great chance of him succeeding then any 3rd round pick and a B Prospect that Harris will command today as is.
https://hockeyroyalty.com/2024/03/22/la-kings-the-curious-case-of-arthur-kaliyev/</div></div>

I don't think MTL management consider Kaliyev as part of the puzzle
