Strangely optimistic for the future of the Pens
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>F50marco</b></div><div>Just floating an idea out there. Do you think Dubas and the Pens would entertain something like this:
MTL
Anderson
Barron
2024 1st WPG
2025 3rd VAN
2024 7th WSH (We know Dubas loves his 7ths so throwing one in here)
for
PIT
Smith Reilly
2024 2nd PHI</div></div>
oh probably, i'd do that bc i'd take a third for reilly smith then the other stuff is fair to take anderson's contract... my thought above was sending a bigger contract the other way which i think makes more sense for PIT, but rakell doesn't have a big NTC like others so he'd be easier to move anyway...

Players Id want

I sort of agree on the value standpoint but also think you may be judging him a bit harshly too. Its not every day that a team has like 4-5 under 23 yo NHL ready dmen all competing for the last couple spots on a team. He's showed he's more than capable at the NHL but ppl have to be reminded that he is also still young too. He's susceptible to brain farts but most 22 yo dmen are. I think we judge him harsher simply based on the fact we have a plethora of other options. That doesn't mean he wouldn't be an everyday dman on another team with less depth. Habs have an abnormal amount of young depth at this level that they can afford to not be as patient.</div></div>
Fully agree i think he could still develop into a decent dman, but I think philly could pry him from mtl for a little cheaper, then they wouldve been able to last year..But 100% he is a victim of the deep prospect pool the habs have on d.

UFA frenzy dilemma
Teravainen and Marchessault would seem to me to be the best forward fits, but I have no idea what they would sign for. (The former looks low and the latter looks high.) Pesce is the best defensive signing and I think that you have his numbers right.

His agent and our GM talked extension recently and no news on that. So, no extension + our place on standings = fan speculation.
Also…our top lines play fast…and he has struggled with tempo on transition at times. In the o-zone, he is great.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>F50marco</b></div><div>What's the issue with Toffoli? Seems to be the odd man out in a lot of these.</div></div>
Earlier (pre McLeod exile) it was because there were 10 guys who all deserved top 9 spots.
I wanted lines of:
Hughes-Haula-Mercer
Nico-Palat-Bratt
McLeod-Meier-Holtz
Lazar-Smith-Bastian
Now it’s still similar in that I’d like to give toffolis role to holtz, but also in that we now have other needs.
A) this may not be our year and we may sell
B) due to injuries we need to preserve cap space to prevent our rookie bonuses from rolling over
C) our most pressing need is a puck moving LD and PK guy, followed by a goalie, followed by improvements to our depth/4th line/PKing forwards (took a big hit losing McLeod who had been elite on both ends)
So moving toffoli, who is a touch slow for our system imo, in order to get A) Cap space B) Holtz into the top 6 and C) assets to use to fill more crucial needs is a prudent solution instead of losing him for nothing in the offseason assuming he doesn’t resign.

Buying still for some reason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>F50marco</b></div><div>Honestly, if NJD are interested in Allen, he could be had for cheap IMO. I don't think the sticking point is value for the Habs, its not retaining. I think they're not entertaining any trade where they retain, solely cause they need the retention spots for other players. And obviously as others have mentioned, Habs aren't moving Monty. He's the guy going forward in MTL now.</div></div>
NJD would pass on an unretained Allen at probably any price. Acquiring him unretained means we likely eat rookie bonuses next year. Adding allen for this year is not worth adding 6 million dollars to next years salary cap.

Calm Down
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>F50marco</b></div><div>I know its wrong, probably, but I just can't bring myself to value a Pens forward not named Crosby or Malkin fairly. All I see are Dupuis's and Kunitz's. They could play an entire season without those guys in the lineup and I'd still be like "Ah they're just a product of Sid/Geno...."
Just for that bias alone, I think Reinhart is better and more valuable.
And yes I totally understand that if Cole Caufield had the stats Guentzel has had, he'd be considered a star player without any question. Like I said, I know its a bias.</div></div>
This has been a thing that has been disproved time and time again. Through Jake's tenure as a Penguin, he's had many long stretches where Sid and/or Geno have been injured and still maintained his production.
I'm not saying this in an argumentative way, but if the idea that you can place anyone next to Sid or Geno and turn them into a 30-40 goal scorer EVERY year, then they'd be spending $2M a year on every top-six winger. It takes a certain skill set and certain abilities to be able to play with Sid and Geno.
And FWIW, Dupuis and Kunitz never put up Jake's numbers, and they had Sid in his prime years.

Thread:
Sean Monahan Trade Comps
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>F50marco</b></div><div>Something to keep in kind that isn't shown in these trade comps is how many playoff teams had cap space and what % of their cap they had to deal with per year. A major driving force for Monahan's value is his potential cap hit being basically AHL replacement level. So many teams have so little cap space to move this year as opposed to some of the comps years.
This may be one of the toughest years for playoff teams to go get players at the TDL. Its not so bad if you have a cap dump you can send the other way but many teams have done tidy business and have neither cap space to get a 3-4-5M players nor a cap dump they could send back of equal value to offset the player coming in.
So Monahan at 950K (50% retained) is basically the only option some of these teams have if that's the type of player they want. if this TDL was transposed over another years TDL, the value probably would drop. The main driving factor for Monahan's value is probably this particular seasons circumstances. Not so much that he soooooo good.</div></div>
It is one of the reasons I included the ROR deal because it came at a premium because the salary was 25% of original. Jarnkrok also included for that reason too ($2m retained down to $1m). I guess I leave it up to readers to determine what fits and what doesn’t.
The environmental landscape (league wide cap space, availability of other centers, etc) is really hard to factor into these.
Separately, I had thought about doing one of these using just comps from a single year. For instance, my favorite year was probably 2007 (which was nuts). I’d like to make a list of all the guys that were traded that year…and the most similar player today. (Who are the modern day versions of Peter Forsberg, Chris Pronger, Keith Tkachuk, Bill Guerin, Yanic Perreault, etc)…and what it would look like today if we had that many stars moving around.

I'm still not 100% comfortable with pointing fingers until it's confirmed (press conference is on Feb 5th) and nor am I really interested in a bunch of comments in AGMs or discussion threads along the lines of "X team declines because [player] is a sex offender". Twitter itself has been a cesspool since Dube, Hart, and now the two NJD skaters took their leave of absence from their respective clubs.
I present this only as an honest question and not as an accusation, but is that what we should be fostering here? I personally don't value engagement and clicks over much more focused discussions and the only real discussion of importance the hockey community as a whole should be having surrounding the 2018 WJC team is "what can we do as the hockey community to make sure this doesn't happen again?". Vitriol and anger over the five names in speculation isn't doing anything effective and if anything just opens up more avenues for flaming/trolling.</div></div>
My opinion would be to send warnings first and if they continue to post about it, then upgrade to an infraction.

Currently, any speculation as to who was involved or who did what garners an automatic Level 1 infraction. I am anticipating that were going to see some very inappropriate hot-takery once the names are released. Its a bad trade (assuming Rutger hasn't asked for a trade) because he's a highly touted prospect that they just drafted but the value believe it or not isn't bad. Its main fault is quantity over quality but if you were to trade each one of those pieces individually and then consolidate as much as possible, you'd probably end up with a value that would be respectful for Rutger if it were done that way.
Regardless though, its the equivalent of trading 100 pennies for a 1 dollar coin/bill. Yeah they equal the same but intrinsically they don't. If someone wanted to pay me a dollar in pennies for something I had, I'd rather not make deal at all than accept the pennies.</div></div>
