Trying to make sense of UFA signings
You could take Jones out of that proposal and CHI would still decline. Norris is a HUGE risk, and both him and Hamonic would need to be paid for in order for CHI to take them. Pinto is not enough to pay for that. It is also worth noting that CHI is no longer in a position to take on cap dumps.

New Team Who Dis
The only thing I can think of is that KD is fine with putting guys on waivers to start the season and isn't worried about losing anyone for nothing. And maybe guys like Maroon and Smith, so late in their careers, are ok with that too.
Personally, I think that could be a HUGE mistake when it comes to certain players, like Reichel and Anderson, but KD gonna do what KD gonna do. Also, we need at least one more center, preferably for the 2nd line. I think KD should be on the phone with OTT about Pinto, and FLA about Lundell.

Chicago total mess
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PaulKorea</b></div><div>Giving Brodie that 2nd year is about the only questionable thing from yesterday. The rest of it I can understand.</div></div>
Well, I think that second year signals that they don't expect any young guys to put a solid claim that roster spot on the right side for the next two years, at least. But he plays both sides and if guys do take it from him he can always play on the bottom pair or be a #7 next year. Also, I think CHI might be gearing up for a push to move Jones and his contract (maybe even Murphy at some point too). A better team SHOULD, in turn, make Jones look better, and hopefully raise his trade stock. I anticipate he might ask for a trade at some point and KD doesn't want to have to pay to move him when the time comes, or at least get as much out of moving him as possible. Having Brodie there as a solid veteran presence ensures that they won't be left with TOO big of a hole in the defense IF/WHEN it happens.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hawksguy81</b></div><div>You and I must not have been watching the same Leaf games. Each of the last two seasons, Brodie's play has declined in the 2nd half of the season and he was just plain bad in the playoffs. He starts out the season strong but can't seem to sustain 5hat level of play as the season wears on. To be honest, I'm disappointed KD signed Martinez at all. And giving Brodie a 2nd year is a head scratcher too.</div></div>
I mean... He is no spring chicken, but I am not expecting him to be. I expect him to bring experience and guidance and maybe support a budding young offensive defenseman. But also, the statistics and analytics don't lie, he is pretty darn good defensively and will likely fit Richardson's systems much better than the top heavy offense first systems that TOR was running under Keefe. He was also probably the best option left after Tanev, Walker, Roy, and Carrier came off the UFA board.

Being the only player to not get the vaccine during the bubble season was perceived by many to be selfish but that is the only “blemish” on his reputation I have heard of.</div></div>
It's a pretty important blemish, imo. But if he is a good dude and does well on the ice and the red flags don't become a problem, fine. I just don't don't want right wing conspiracy theorist bull$hit infecting the team that I love and have rooted for my whole life. And I won't apologize for thinking that should be a priority for a team that is already on thin ice.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Snowhawk18</b></div><div>I liked the Bertuzzi, Teravainen and Brossoit signings. The Martinez, Smith and Big Rig signings are whatever, one year deals.
The Brodie signing though is awful, he has really been exposed the last couple of seasons in Toronto with his lack of foot speed being exploited on a regular basis. Giving him two seasons is a definite head scratcher and I honestly think this will be a move that Kyle from Chicago regrets. They would have been better off keeping that money in their pockets and maintaining a little more cap flexibility. Perhaps this is a precursor to a Murphy trade or perhaps Murphy’s late season injury is a little more significant than anyone realized.</div></div>
I like the Bertuzzi signing from an "on-ice" perspective. But I think that is an awful signing from a culture and development aspect, which is more important at this juncture than the on-ice aspect.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hawksguy81</b></div><div>As long as the plan is for Brodie to sit most nights as the 7th D, this roster is significantly better than last year. If Nazar, Slaggert or Dach are ready for the NHL to start the season, they'll be in the lineup. Same on the blue line. EDM and Allen aren't forced to be NHL'ers if they aren't ready yet. Center depth isn't good but I can see Kurashev filling the other middle 6 C spot (with Dickinson) if the Hawks don't make another move. Still not a playoff team but should be a lot better. And added some skill to play w/ Bedard.</div></div>
Huh? What do you have against Brodie? The only thing that made him a cap dump before was his contract coupled with the fact that TOR was desperate for cap space. I'd put my money on him being a partner for Korchinski. The whole narrative of "Martinez being Theodore's partner and therefore being a match for Korch" isn't even true. Martinez and Theodore played almost no time with each other over their time in VGK. Martinez is here to play with Murphy on the 3rd pair or be the #7, more than likely.

Chicago total mess
It is a mess. A mess that is not easy to speculate on, but will easily sort itself out and leaves it entirely up to the coaching staff and the players battling for a spot. It's designed to promote competition within CHI's system while being more competitive against other teams and bringing in a ton of experience, some skill, and some defensive responsibility. It should also make our AHL club in Rockford pretty fun to watch, and I would bet that they win a calder cup in the next few years, and THAT is exciting.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hockeyplayer1</b></div><div>Are you suggesting here that you’d rather keep Reichel than get Robertson?
I’d agree with the part about Marner but none of the rest. And would argue that having Marner at the end of a next contract is FAR better than having Jones at the end of his.</div></div>
One awful season, in what was essentially his rookie season, on the second worst team in NHL, that had a mountain of injuries for more than half the season, isn't going to make CHI give up on him. Especially when he was thrust into a top 6 center role right off the bat with almost no help. Reichel is the player we saw in 22-23 and what we saw this season after he was sent down to the AHL for a month and who he was at the Worlds last month. He is not the player we saw for most of this season. Giving up on him for an undersized injury riddled forward that has no place in the future of CHI makes very little sense, especially after the signings CHI has already made today on the opening of free agency. Robertson is worth a 3rd at best. Also, Reichel's toolkit and skill set matches what CHI is trying to build more closely.
So, yes, I am suggesting that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hockeyplayer1</b></div><div>I’m not sure why hawks fans would be so against this? You should be expecting Levshunov to be the top RHD in like two years.
Hawks would obviously push hard to sign Marner long term.</div></div>
Because Marner is going to command a raise from what is already a very expensive contract. Most of his prime will be squandered on a rebuilding/developing team, and then when we are ready to contend he will more than likely be in decline and his contract will be in the way of signing other contracts. We have no one to take Jones place NOW, and even when Levshunov is ready to make the leap to the NHL, it is highly unlikely he will be a top pairing defender right off the bat. Because we like Jones and have a crapload invested in him. Because we don't undervalue Reichel after just one poor season. Because we have zero interest in an injury prone undersized forward, in Robertson, who frankly has no place on CHI's roster. And so on.
Also, with both of them having full NMC's, it is unlikely that either player is willing to waive for the other team, let alone both of them.

If you want reactions. Just go back to the ArmchairGM page, sort by Toronto, and look at all the trades involving CHI over the last few months. A lot of those proposals involve a swap of Marner for Jones. It is not well received by CHI fans.
