-Ottawa needs to dump Joseph (Negative Value) to open up cap space to acquire Brandon Tanev (Negative Value), but Seattle doesn't want to take Joseph.
-Tanev has negative value to most teams, but has positive value to Ottawa because they plan to use him to wooooh his brother into signing. Let's be adults here and accept tampering exists, Ottawa has reason to believe Chris Tanev will sign if they get his brother. So this trade is more about Chris than it is about Brandon.
-Calgary's ownership badly wants Iginla (within reason). Ottawa can get a similar tier of player at 9.
-Calgary takes Joseph (worth about a 2nd) and gives Ottawa a late 2nd to swap picks. Effectively, two 2nd round picks worth of value.
-Ottawa sends the late 2nd to Seattle for Tanev with light retention to make it cap in/cap out with Joseph.
-Ottawa then sends a mid round pick to Dallas for the rights of good (but very old) Tanev, and signs the contract that they totally weren't tampering to get. Of course, they could wait until July 1st, but things can change, better to lock it all down.
Ottawa exploits Calgary's familial situation, while Seattle exploits Ottawa's familial situation. Seattle remains unexploited.
