If Marino has largely continued to play the way that he was before NJ aquired him, im not following how his value ballooned up from a 3rd to a 1st... same player and same deal but only with les term which would likely be less appealing than the situation that the Devils bought into.

Ty Smith was a year removed from the all rookie team and 7th in calder voting def wasn't just a 3rd

Problem is that it was Hextall that set the acquisition price.
Given that he's one of the weakest GMs to ever run a team I see his valuation of Marino at the time to have zero bearing on Marino's true asset value.
Besides, Ty Smith still had a fair amount of value left in the summer of 2022.

Top 4 RHD, with term, on a reasonable cap hit and still in his 20s should have no problems whatsoever in getting the Devils pick #25 (with some other pieces moving back and forth).

Also, Marino was genuinely fantastic in his 1st season with the Devils. That was his best ever season, and it's not like he was playing poorly for the Devils last season.

That’s a horrible Trade for OTT

Marino likely doesn’t waive for Canada anyways, but even if he did, I wouldn’t Trade Brannstrom for Marino straight up

brannstrom is probably not even getting qualified lol. P2 RD with defensive chops and can move the puck on a decent cap hit with term is literally exactly what this team is after, we were very very in on him when he was traded to the devils in the first place. Maybe make the argument for pick 39 over 25 but thats not that much of a value drop off

Marino’s a 3rd Pairing D-Man who is serviceable on the 2nd Pairing. He’s overrated

Brannstrom on the other hand is underrated and simply stuck behind greater producers in Chabot, Sanderson and then Chychrun. Brannstrom is still young and with more TOI should have a breakout year offensively like Oliver Kylington had for CGY a couple years back.

hes totally fine in that 2RD role next to chabot. if they strike out on UFA deals for guys like Carrier Demelo etc, hes a very on-par equivalent.

Brannstrom is never going to get that opportunity though, so hes completely expendable

Name 12 teams with Multiple RHD better than Marino.

I'll give you 7 to start.

Panthers (with montour resigned), bruins, islanders, canes (with Pesce resigned), wild (with healthy spurgeon), Kings (with Roy resigned), flames (if you play weegar at RD).

I get Brannstrom is expendable, but he’s still an RFA, so you’d probably get a 3rd + 5th, which is all I think Marino is worth. If you want to acquire and use him, fine but adding a 1st is a huge over pay imo
