Ya, trading away Kampf wont cost a 1st and I think it will be fairly easy to move Kampf for a 4th/5th to a team looking for a defensive center.
Monhan was traded for a 1st, but his contract was 6375000 and had just put up 23 points and a -15, while Kampf put up 19 points and a -4 (mostly due to having to play with Reaves at the beginning of the year). He has a third of the cost and produced similair results. I think if Monahan cost a 1st, there is no equivalency to Kampf costing a first.
Kostin is a bad example, he was a 1st overall but never played like it when he was traded.
Bailey was 5 million and then bought out. He did not have any value, which Kampf does but slightly overpaid. Again, only a 2nd moved.
Zaitsev contract was 4.5 million and had a year and a half left and only cost a 2nd and fourth to get rid of. He was far overpaid for his worth and did not cost a 1st.
The four examples dont highlight it will cost Kampf.
Kampf is a decent player but with Leafs salary structure we do not have the luxury of keeping him but for other teams he would be an ideal #4 center (Martinook is not a center also).
But either way, this is all fantasy **** so who cares. Just one idea on the multitude of what the Leafs could do, but they will probably screw it up.

Ok, ready? Sean Monahan tied to a first round pick and...
Kailer Yamamoto tied to former first round pick Klim Kostin signing rights.
Josh Bailey, tied to a 2nd rounder.
NIkita Zaitsev tied to a second and fourth
It's not about how much he is overpaid by. It is how much cap relief the sending team is getting by getting rid of this player. in your ACGM, you basically 'traded' Kampf for Martinook + 4th. Cap friendly's 'professional report' has Kampf at a 75 and Martinook at an 81. Why wouldn't Buffalo attempt to sign the better player instead of taking on a 4th liner making too much for too long? Why would they acquire a player making $2.4, when, historically, they can fill the 4th line position with a player making $1M.
Puckpedia, who people should start getting familiar with, has a great too called 'Cap Relief Calculator' which allows you to plug in any player at their current value from historical trades. Plugging in Kampf, because every Leaf fan has him traded away in their ACGM, has a value of the 26th over all pick because the value of the total contract is $7.2M.
