Description
First time posting, so have it at it. Not a lot of unique thinking here, just trying to put it all in one place

Leaf and Ranger fans are going to say that the return on Marner and Trouba isn't enough, but the key returns for both teams are filling needs and cap space - particularly for the Rags (and they're getting a serviceable/retained Murphy in the process... and one year of Marner isn't the goldmine Leafs fans think it is. Not sure if either will wiv the NTC's, so assuming they do, what needs to be added/subtracted to make things work?

Sign Marner for 8 X $11MM (not much of an actual raise, but from a taxation standpoint, Mitch'll be making more actual dough)

Target Tanev as a UFA for one of the RD (I think he was Bedard's favorite player growing up), and then the Hawks will still need one more NHL RD, so I think that KD will weaponize remaining cap space to do that and add some more future draft capital. Open to suggestions.

As for the draft, my current thinking is that the Hawks take Lev at #2 and then move up to #10 or #11 (or so) and pick up one of Catton, Iginla or Sennecke, etc (whomever is available)

Neither Marner or Jones likely waive. Hawks unlikely to trade Jones or for Marner. Why trade Murphy for broken down Trouba? No.

As far as I know Jones is seen as negative value around the league because of that contract and his perceived fall off. So no, I don't think I would take this deal for futures, let alone Marner.

I’m not a fan of either trade but the Hawks really get bent over with that Rangers deal. Trouba would need at least a 1st round pick attached to him to move that contract which means the Hawks are giving Murphy with 50% retention away for nothing.

Look at the trade again... it's Trouba + NYR 2024 1st for Murphy at 50%. Weaponizing the extra cap space

Plus, Murphy and Touba have similar injury histories, so I see that as sort of a wash

Oh I’ve looked at it a few times and every time I have the same opinion… that Rangers trade is horrible for the Hawks.

Ah, I've got you. You're valuing Murphy more than I am. How would you balance the deal then, or would you just not do it?

I'm looking for the Hawks to acquire a couple of extra first-rounders this year, and picking up someone like Trouba (who's contract is only two more years) could be a vehicle to do that.

I think if they Rangers are looking to dump Trouba’s contract it will cost them a 1st round pick to move the remaining two years at $8m per season.

Murphy isn’t a cap dump, the Hawks still value his leadership and like having the option of pairing him with one of their young RHD. IF someone wants him I think the price is a 2nd round pick without retention. If the Hawks are requested to retain 25 -50% then the price goes up to a 1st round pick.
