Canucks arent trading their franchise center that has been signed to a contract less than what Marner will ask for

In addition to not wanting to trade their franchise C for a winger that will make more, the Canucks top prospects in general have higher ceilings than the Leafs, and the Leafs don't have a blue-chip C prospect either, so there's just no way this makes sense for Vancouver. So, even if you were to give them Cowan and Minten, and even add Knies, and take back lesser prospects and young players, it wouldn't make sense.

Yep exactly this. The only Pettersson to Toronto deal that would make sense for the Canucks is Pettersson+ for Matthews, and the Leafs obviously won’t do that

So after listening to the Leafs media and fans disembowel Marner for several weeks now, your suggesting trading him to the Canucks for their #1 center? Dreamer......

With Matthews' contract situation, Vancouver's management might be too scared to even do that 1-for-1, can't imagine them having it in them to do Pettersson+ even if Jimmy "Make Trades" Rutherford is the President. Even if Matthews, does re-sign in Vancouver, could be new management inking that deal as they'll be tossing themselves into a 3-year win-now window. Depending on the team's performance and if Hughes is retained or not, they could end up getting canned before or after the 3rd year (probably Allvin first, then Rutherford).

Totally agree bro. Feels like this wouldn’t make one bit of sense for either team

Could make sense for the Leafs if they are just giving up Cowan, Minten and picks along with Marner, since they secure 2C position for years to come and protects them from being in an odd position if Matthews walks/gets traded down the road. Although, they might not be improving their roster (who knows? maybe they do get better combinations with EP over MM) and the futures' cupboard would be getting even barer. It certainly does beat many if not all of the Marner for cap trades though.
