As annoying as the Marner trades are getting, it really is hilarious to see the herd opinion on capfriendly be "well he's expiring in a year so realistically he's worth nothing", when I think we can retain and get a pretty hefty return for an 80-90pt player, no?

Carolina sent a decent package for Guentzel with the notion they may not even keep him. Lindholm got a good package and he's probably a rental as well.

But, that's capfriendly. Not wanting to give up good assets for other good assets. Gotta love it.

"We drafted this guy 27th overall 3 years ago, you can't have him for your top line forward!!"

Well considering Elias Lindholm went for a 20 goal scorer, 1 decent forward and defence prospect, a 1st round pick, and a 4th round pick, he should be worth more then that.

Salary cap era, with limited guarantees of getting him for more than one year, limited amount of teams that may think he is the missing piece for a championship run, especially when the track record in the playoffs is mediocre. So the multiple piece packages just aren’t reasonable with the need to remain a contender. Is there a team in lottery where he’s the missing piece? Possibly Buffalo if Toronto has the gonads to trade him that close to possibly burn them for the rest of the career.

Lindholm is a center without the crazy extension numbers, Canucks wanted the 20 goal scorer out of town also. Will be interesting what the trade turns into

The cap is also going up by 4.2 mill and there are actually a lot of contending teams who can afford Marner if they move out enough salary. The Canucks, Hurricanes, Redwings, Bruins, Kings, Devils, Panthers, Stars, Blues, Jets, and Preds all have about 15-20 mill in cap space going into next season. If any one of those teams are able to move out one kind-of-high contract for a mediocre player, Marner becomes an easy fit.

Marner $10.9m
Lindholm $4.85m

Its a big difference for a lot of teams...if they are retaining half, as above, they would get more.

Here is a Lindholm package...

Elias Lindholm went for a late 1st (currently 29th), a mediocre prospect in Brzustewicz, and a cap dump. He was also a center making less than 5M and it was at the deadline.

If Marner is traded this summer it'll be after July 1, and it'll probably be something along the lines of a late 1st, a good but cheaper roster player (probably on the brink of UFA himself), and a good but not elite or blue chip prospect.

Problem 1 is most Leafs fans think they're going to get either blue chip/elite prospects, 1sts from lottery teams, or roster pieces that are tied down. I've seen proposals for Brock Faber and Joel Eriksson Ek. I've seen proposals for top 10 picks. I've seen proposals for defenseman that just signed extensions with their teams. None of these pieces are realistic no matter how good you think Marner is, and that's not a slight on Marner, that's just how this works.

Problem 2 is you guys keep sending him to teams that don't want/can't afford him. It's a non starter.

Then you turn around and assume the issue is everyone thinks he has no value. That's not the case, you're just gaslighting yourselves because you guys keep making ****ty proposals.

Final part of it is every other fanbase is so sick of typical Leafs threads and proposals because the raw number of bad offers far outweigh that of any other fanbase (besides Montreal), that they're already walking into the thread standoffish because they assume it's going to suck for their team, and most of the times it does.

You guys do this to yourself.
