Trading up

Created by: Kam23

Initial Creation Date: May 5, 2024
Published: May 5, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
STL
  1. 2024 1st round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
Blues are in desperate need for Dmen prospects and there will likely be no good ones available (Parekh, Yakemchuk, Silayev, Levshunov, Dickinson, Buium) and reaching for a D is a big mistake.
NJD
  1. 2024 1st round pick (STL)
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Devils have a bit of hole in terms of young middle six centers and left wingers in the organization and there should be some good options available (Sennecke, Connelly, Greentree, MBN, Hage, etc) even if they trade down to 16. They also get a second they could use to trade for help now or use.
2.
STL
  1. 2024 1st round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
The Sabres have a pretty stacked prospect pool and young core already in the NHL only hole I see is a 2nd pair RD so idk if they would be interested in trading down but maybe just trade the pick for a 2nd pair RD that can help them now. Not related but I see them trading one of Savoie or Ostlund or move one to the wing but they already got a lot of wingers.
BUF
    2024 1st round pick (STL)
    2024 2nd round pick (TOR)
    3.
    STL
    1. 2024 1st round pick (SEA)
    SEA
      2024 1st round pick (STL)
      2024 2nd round pick (TOR)
      2024 3rd round pick (NYR)

The Kraken have major hole in terms good young right wingers and taking one at 8 would be a reach imo so if they aren’t interested in getting a RD which I think is there 2nd biggest hole (Levshunov and Parekh probably gone and Yakemchuk would be a reach at 8) than trading down to 16 to get Sennecke or Greentree or MBN or Chernyshov makes sense while also picking up a second and third rounder makes sense.
      4.
      STL
        2024 1st round pick (NJD)
        NJD
        1. Hayes, Kevin ($1,571,429 retained)
        Additional Details:
        2024 1st round pick (STL)

1st A devils fan made this trade offer and I thought it made sense for both sides. The devils have a need at 3C since they lost McLeod in the wjc incident and they now get Hayes cheap for 2M for the next two years just for trading down 6 spots. This trade gives a spot to one of the blues prospects Dvorsky, Dean, and Alexandrov on top of selecting a D at 10 and not trading away a 2nd.

If it is your 24 1st the blues should definitely be interested

Idk if you heard Armstrong in these press conferences he loves Buch he isn’t gonna trade him, he is gonna try to resign him I thought he should’ve traded him at the deadline

for the blues to get the devils pick it would likely cost 16 both 2nd rounders and a 3rd. Per https://puckpedia.com/pickvalue

Kraken pass. Bigger hole in top prospects on the blue line. They'll go with Firkus and Nyman being their top prospects on the RW.

I think that’s way too much for just 6 spots maybe I would add a 3rd or switch the Toronto second to the blues one but if it’s more than that I would stand pat. The thing with calculators it doesn’t take into account the strength of the draft and the draft tiers along with the teams situation (needs).

Nyman has always on the left side and the only prop spect or young player in the organization that has nhl potential is Firkus and that’s it. The kraken already used two seconds last year and one before that on D and you left side is already locked in with Dunn, Evans, Price, etc.

I'm just saying historically its a severe underpayment arizona paid pick 14 and 45 to move up to 11

You guys already have Kulich, Benson, Peterka, and maybe Wallberg or Ostlund who prob get moved to a left wing spot. Unless you’re moving some of that in the Buch trade or another trade I don’t think it makes sense for the Sabres.

Well I think the Yotes overpaid in that one and could afford to considering all the picks they have. Armstrong loved Geekie and nobody expected him to be available at 11 going into the draft.

it was the 2019 draft which is a very similar draft talent wise to 2024 yotes paid 27 34 and 45 to move to 11 in 2022

It's very unlikely the Sabres trade down or any of their 1st round forwards. They have a recruitment problem. When nobody wants to waive their NTC and no FA wants to sign with you, prospect development becomes the paramount focus.

I heard the press conference. He said he is going to try to resign him. Also needed to make sure Buch was on the same page in that they might not be competitive for a bit. Never did he say that he wasn’t going to trade him…

I think trading down for NJD might be wise move. Most of the core is set…and the holes to plug (3C, defensive dmen, heavier middle-six winger, depth, goalie) may be easier to do with multiple picks. Generally, I don’t see a huge difference between 10 and 16 unless you are targeting a specific position, which NJD probably aren’t. The best trade down scenario I have seen is Minnesota’s #13/Gustavsson for #10.

He didn’t say it directly but both parties sound interested in an extension I would be really surprised if doesn’t have an extension before next season

I agree prospect development is important for them but when you have so much good prospects and young players wouldn’t it make sense to use the picks to get players that help now. Trading back let’s you do both maybe you use the 2nd or 3rd you get but trade the 1st.

Damn I doubt the Wild do that but if the Devils get that offer they should accept right away. Wonder what the thought process is for Wild in that trade scenario.

Yeah. Too many prospects. Ostlund/Rosen and a 2024 1st top 5 protected for Buch. Maybe a B level prospect too to St Louis.

it was the 2019 draft which is a very similar draft talent wise to 2024 yotes paid 27 34 and 45 to move to 11 in 2022

Thought you were talking about the 2922 draft how is 2019 like this years draft? And wouldn’t agree that 16 56 81 for 10 not close if not more valuable than 14 45 for 11 anyways

I agree prospect development is important for them but when you have so much good prospects and young players wouldn’t it make sense to use the picks to get players that help now. Trading back let’s you do both maybe you use the 2nd or 3rd you get but trade the 1st.

It does make sense, but they can't get the help you're thinking of. All the players that can move the needle have no move clauses. I suppose they could trade Savoie for a 3rd liner without a no move clause, but that would be thoroughly and correctly mocked.

They won't all graduate the minors at the same time, so they will all likely get a spot when ready. Greenway, Skinner, Girgensons, Krebs, vacant centre spot will eventually be --> Wahlberg, Ostlund, Kulich, Rosen, Savoie.
