Unholy Alliance Not Looking So Bad Now

Created by: jonh514
Team: 2024-25 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 5, 2024
Published: May 5, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I posted about a week ago that I thought a Marner sign & trade to the Habs, while not popular, makes a lot of sense for both teams. Here's why:

1) Habs need forward talent, and Marner would be the closest thing to Panarin we can manage this offseason
2) Habs have the cap space to spend on a Marner sign & trade
3) Leafs need a Marner deal to free some cap space to go shopping for a better balanced team in general, and not many teams can accommodate
4) Leafs need to improve their defense core and the Habs have defense to spare (assuming the Leafs use the pick on D)

Habs fans don't want to admit it, but Marner would make this team so much better and is just entering his prime.

I also just want to address what I heard last time. Marner is "not a playoff performer". It's true that some guys get you to the playoffs, and some guys get you through the playoffs. Marner has a history of putting up close to 1 point per game in the playoffs, which is well above average. The Habs have other gritty players, so I doubt this will be as much of an issue as it was in Toronto.

This deal is win-win IMO!

If Marner were to waive for MTL leafs 100% take this. I wouldn't since Marner has proven to NOT be that guy guy. Elite player but not the player that gets a team over the hump

It's a team game. Right now both teams are unbalanced. This deal, while unpopular, gets the Habs a prime-aged all star player who will help our weak power play (both in the regular season and the playoffs).

This trade can't happen in this fashion. Marner isn't eligible for an extension until after the 2024 draft with the draft happening on June 28 and Marner not being able to sign a new contract until July 1st.

Didn't think about that. Perhaps it's a handshake deal.

It would have to be but I think that's probably a step too far. A 6th overall pick doesn't get moved on faith alone.

Who do you think we are going to draft that is going to be a better NHL player than Marner over the next 5 years?

better player? almost anyone not tainted by a team that has lost 4 games 7s on boston ice in the last decade.

anyone at all john.

soimetimes players are amazing but dont fit well in the system, the currrent pool of players, the coaches, or even (in amrners case) the playoffs

I WOULD TAKE LEHKONEN ALL DAY OVER MITCHEL MARNER

I think your reasoning is all emotion and hate for the Leafs and nothing to do with logic.

Yes the Leafs model has not worked. Mostly that's due to COVID and the salary cap being stagnant for so many years. I'm not a big proponent of advanced stats, but even I can admit that Dubas had an incredibly forward thinking vision on how to draft and put together an amazing core.

Yes he overpaid them and it handcuffed the Leafs, but literally only because the cap never went up.

Anyway people, especially Habs & Bruins fans are gonna gloat and say the team was fatally flawed, but they really just ran into extraordinary bad luck.

no hate young man, thats too much effort. i actually find the make beleafs to be ideal rivals. love it actually. (amazing you can 'sense' my emotions through my typos. you must be half beta-zoid)

the end all be all of success in the league is the trophy.

lehkenen has earned one because he is willing.

the leafs are led by taraves. the captain. capn not crunch.

lehkonen is paid less than half what marner is. and is 3 times the player. WHEN IT COUNTS.

I’d rather draft someone that can contribute towards winning a Stanley cup come playoff time. Marner is not that guy.

This is 100% the best move either team could make. I’d only do this particular deal once Demidov is confirmed to be gone though, but I think it makes a ton of sense. Bet anything the leafs would love London Knight Sam Dickinson. I’d add maybe a little more if we could get their late first in return, so we’d just swap our firsts+. Then we could use the leafs and Winnipeg picks plus whatever else it takes (Matheson/Savard etc) to move into top 15 and get the guy we want anyways. I’d also be willing to make the Marner trade based around Savard and/or Matheson if they’d prefer.

Handshake deal... Or MTL drafts whom Toronto wants, and ships them to Toronto+the other guys for Marner

I don't see the Leafs moving their 1st in a deal with Marner without other stuff going the other way tbh...

But is interesting to think about... I think a trade like:
MTL 24 1st
Stubble
Mesar
Savard with 50% retention
COL 2nd

for
Marner
TOR 1st
