Pesce will get much better UFA offers than that.

I'm sure he will, but the key, at least IMO, is from what kind of quality of a team and roster. My contract is similar to the rumored extension offer this offseason from Carolina.

If the Leafs once again go barren league-minimum salaries for their bottom-6 and pairs, maybe I could see the Leafs doing it. I can't think of other contenders using cap space in such a manner unless the Utah ownership becomes the new Manchester City and just starts buying players to become a contender.

DAL, EDM, TOR would all make better offers than this. Plenty of other competitive teams would too. Pesce is good enough to be a 2RD on most any playoff team.

Man City comparison makes no sense. Not sure you know anything about the EPL but there is no salary cap; completely different animal. All teams in the nhl can spend to the same amount as Utah and lots of teams will have lots of cap space

I kinda disagree. Pesce may worth somewhat more than 5.25m but five year term for soon to be 30 year Dman.....that's dangerous. So many Dmen can fall of the cliff in theri early 30s.

I know there's a difference and I'm relatively familiar with the EPL. My point is that Utah is sitting on an absurd amount of cap space and draft capital because of the destitute prior ownership. They're primed to make a Man City-esque roster explosion, by NHL standards.

Again, the comparison makes no sense given how massively & differently the leagues are setup and run.
And again - lots of teams have lots of cap space next year; only difference is one of the teams changed cities, I guess.

The difference is that nearly every other team that has the kind of cap space that Utah has is still in that rebuilding phase, while this new Utah team wants to transition out of it.

5 years is relatively mild for a UFA contract of a RHD of this caliber. Of course his play is likely to decline, but the reason you pay is to get at least 3 good seasons out of him.

Arizona finished 27th; doubtful they can transition into competitive in one year. All the bottom feeding teams have cap space next year & picks (kind of how nhl works); not sure why you keep saying only Utah does 🤨

Is the thinking in Carolina that Guentzel is more likely to extend than Pesce? I would have guessed other way around.

It's likely the case, yes, but IMO it depends on how they do against the Rangers. If they fail to get past them, I think it's more likely that they keep Guentzel to shake up the forward group some long-term.
