Utah is a Playoff Team

Created by: Marked_Difference
Team: 2024-25 Arizona Coyotes
Initial Creation Date: May 1, 2024

Description
Clayton Keller spoke with media and felt the AZ/Utah team is a playoff team. I think they are close and here is an option that would potentially get them over the line.

1st line centers are rare to acquire, even fringe ones. Jared McCann is a rare possibility. Seattle has Beiners and Wright ready to take their places as the 1/2 punch down the middle making McCann expendable.

Utah needs to add to their blue line and there are several options available. The ones I like are Montour and Graves. The system in Utah lends to both of these guys.
Montour can still be a #1RHD but he will cost more for less term than he should, but the price is worth paying.
Graves is a really good 2nd pairing LHD being mis-used horribly by his current club.

Bit of tweaking and this really can be a playoff team next year.

Additional Details:
Soda - Good young RHD that could challenge for a roster spot in Seattle.

Milos - #13 forward good up and down the line up.

Draft picks to equalize trade value.

  1. Graves, Ryan
Additional Details:
Graves is mis-used in the Pitt system. Allowing him to be a clogging presence, big body, shutdown guy on the 2nd pairing would be great and exactly what Utah will need.

Weber to ltir should gain you cap, possibly time to move on from vejimelka, possibly Hayton also. Could be a place to bargain shop a goalie with potential to pair with ingram possibly one of the better bargains in the league. Geekie coming that may stay in the middle so I would possibly swing a little higher than McCann for 1c with the assets that you have. Some cap issue teams out there that may drop someone nice to you to alleviate the cap issues. Probably busiest team in draft and July 1

Seattle's not going to go for that. Contrary to what you stated in the description, McCann isn't expendable. He's held down top-six center roles for the Kraken, but is just as comfortable on the wing, so he can easily move there. In fact, McCann was primarily a winger last year when Seattle made their playoff run. He's also the Kraken's best goalscorer, and Seattle's a team that needs to add scoring, not subtract it. Trading McCann would be counterproductive for the Kraken, and I don't see him going anywhere anytime soon.

Geekie needs a year or two in the AHL to get used to the pro game. Hayton fills the 3rd line center role while he develops. Agreed that there is a goalie need but Ingram/Vejmelka has consistently been above average goaltending for the NHL. Having a star tendie is important but not as critical as it was 10years ago.

Hayton is a bust and ran its course, needs a change of scenery, geekie coming faster than you think, only thing stopping him from breaking camp with the team next fall is roster spots, he’s next years Guenther if the opportunity arises. As far as goaltending I hand the reigns to Ingram and try to get the value out of veji ahead of extending him. Another project looking for an opportunity, possibly the heir in Florida that has gone through a rough patch. Arizona always gets best bang for there buck in net.

I think that Jarry and Vejmelka are on about equal footing these days, mid 1B tendies. Jarry's best days between the pipes are behind him and he has already lost some of his explosiveness. Jarry would be a step in the wrong direction for Utah IMO.
