Calgary was still trying to extend Tkachuk at that point. It wasn't Nemec specifically but the number 2 overall pick.

The deal was then taken off the table by NJD after the draft

Devils offered #2 pick in June
Calgary was still trying to extend
      Devils then drafted Nemec
      MT decided not to sign
Calgary then began to shop MT
Then MT gave his “list” and NJD weren’t on it

So we didn’t really have much of a window to make Nemec for Tkachuk trade.

I think when people see a dman is smaller and/or puts up a lot of points they just assume he’s offense only. There are still quite a lot of people (mostly on twitter) who still see Hughes as an offense only dman who’s bad defensively, when in reality his defensive game has been very good for 3 seasons now, and elite this year

Just looking at The Athletic’s recent list of top shutdown dmen this year….

      16. Vladislav Gavrikov
      17. Quinn Hughes
      18. Brady Skjei
      19. Brayden McNabb
      20. Brendan Dillon

(Ahead of Miro Heiskanen, Artem Zub, Brock Faber, Colton Parayko, Devon Toews, K’Andre Miller, Sean Walker, Esa Lindell, Kaiden Guhle, Jamie Oleksiak, Adam Pelech)
