2 lottery picks would be enticing

Don't give him 5 years, are you nuts? The KK offersheet shows you how to do it. Overpay for ONE year. Especially when a team is in a hard cap crunch. Then sign them to a fair extension when the deal is done

Yes, when one thinks of the kotkaniemi situation they think about how well it's gone

It is. Do you not remember aforementioned offersheet? They trashed KK for accepting a contract offer for god sake.

I do remember it.

I would have accepted it at the time if I was KK as well.

Ultimately, though, the offersheet on KK was only done as a forceful response to the offersheet on Aho.

MTL sports media is crazy, but most teams local media are less than happy with a young player, one of the two top 5 picks they had made in like 20 years) signs an offersheet and leaves.

You do not move byfield. Simple as that.

You move gavrikov, PLD, Kempe, anderson, whatever. But you don't lose your best asset.

if their hand is forced they might struggle make it work, you could've said the same when KK got offersheeted yet they chose to let him go, although KK wasn't even remotely close to being as good as Byfield is rn.

At that price, I'd do it. MTL would still have CGYs 1st that could be a potential lottery pick for one of the years they give up their own pick. However, with Bergevin in LA to add to it, there would be a decades worth of offer sheets on the Habs young players coming from LA. Habs would be pressured to sign their RFAs prior to their contract expiring, and player agents would totally use that as a negotiation tactic...

could be fun lol

Byfield is not an expendable piece. On a list of pieces to be let go to clear cap space Byfield is dead last

It wasn't. Despite beliefs on this website, the Canes front office loves KK. He was supposed to replace Staal, but Rod threw a tantrum. It's why Rod doesn't have a contract and Staal's buyout is super cheap

ik what you're saying, but nobody should give the kings fair value for a player that takes up cap space if it comes down to it. They should make it a tough decision on whether to match the offersheet and ship out X player(s), or to take the picks and keep X player(s), but then again if I'm the GM of an opposing team and see that the Kings are genuinely considering offers of say a 3rd for Kempe, I'd gladly offer a 2nd, etc.

I'm realizing as I write this that my whole idea relies upon everyone playing hardball with the Kings, even when they could make a significant upgrade to their own team for a low price, but who knows what would happen.

i'd be shocked if the kings were dumb enough to let Byfield get close to FA. His contract is the one with the largest range (bridge vs long term), and will determine how much they have to spend in UFA. They should have him locked up by the draft so they know how much they have to play with

I mean anyone can offer an offer sheet to any RFA. They have to accept it. I doubt LAK are going to low ball Byfield so their offer won't be so much lower than this so what's the point of him accepting a couple extra bucks to play for a worse team?

I think Arpon and MAG were chasing views with that one. Aside from OS being unlikely, that one seems very unlikely of happening for every other reason.

Lundell for example would be at least possible depending on the offer. You'd have to make the offer so high for Byfield to leave LAK that it wouldn't be worth it.

You're trying to sh*t talk the wrong dude, I absolutely adore KK. I'd have him here forever. I'd have Staal gone instead.

If you actually listened to the podcast and not just got a few twitter quotes.
They suggested the idea but both said it would never work as the Habs would have to drastically overpay and the Kings would match any offer for a player they absolutely need.

But hey why not just take everything in hyperbole, serious as cancer, this is a serious place after all with real GM'ing.

Offersheeting KK was done as a means of responding to the offersheet on Aho.

If the Canes did nothing about the offersheet on Aho, it would make them look weak and set a bad precedent.
